Was just taking a browse through the asus global website, and stumbled across this:

    http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?modelmenu=1&model=1499&l1=5&l2=75&l3=480

It looks like asus is expanding the F series by creating this affordable small size laptop. The higher weight and thickness seem to point to an plastic construction as opposed to the carbon fibre chassis of the more expensive lines.

So I guess it looks like decent alternative to the base model xps m1210.

Also, some sites in australia are listing the s7fm for preorder and the best bit is that apparently it will have a 7300go??! Definitely handy for when vista comes out.

There's also an F9 coming out as well.... But as you said, the F and A series are a little more ho hum and all plastic... makes for a good value if nothing else... but it's still a solid system. I do not know if either of these will be coming into the US due to the already tight market between the S6/W5/W7... and with the S7 and U1 certainly coming in the near future.

Two things..... I don't think we'll see the S7 until the Santa Rosa chipset comes out, so it won't be sn S7Fm...... However, in terms of current chipsets, "Fm" stands for integrated graphics on the 945 chipset; merom cpu.

For good measure, under the current generation, "J" is for dedicated graphics under the 945 chipset..... "s" is for nvidia and "p" is for ati... so an S7 with the 945 chipset and a 7300go would be the S7Js, which I have no heard mention of.

Thanks Justin for the explanation of Asus's naming system. I've always wondered how it worked. Now I know!

I think there's room for this in the US! (The F9F that is.) Looks interesting.

Dang this looks nice... Very similar look to the A8. But no dedicated card?

So I suppose no resellers have heard any word of this notebook coming to America?

I must say it has better built quality than A8 and most important: touchpad is waaaay better than the one in A8 series. F9 is also quite big IMO for an 12" ultraportable - 2,1kg with extended battery.

Damn, I wish I didn't need a laptop *now* and could wait a few months for the new batch of models.

Yes, the F9 is basically the same exact notebook as the XPS M1210. Modified chassis, with an Asus logo. The XPS m1210 is HUGE for such a small screen. Had one and sold it, is barely smaller than an 14.1 laptop, and basically the same size as a 13.3 Macbook, but much thicker. Kind of inexcuseable if you ask me, since there is so much wasted border around the screen, they probably could have stuck a 13.3 in screen in there.

Yes, it will, we will work on the review of F9F later this week and have it posted here early next week.

In the same time, we will also work on the review of F5R, will also post here next week.

I was more interested in the Asus F9 J, because of the dedicated nVidia graphics: http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=5&l2=75&l3=480&model=1555&modelmenu=1
I really would like to see the F9J here at a price point of $1200 or so, something that undercuts the W7J by a significant amount.

And what is the F5R? I know its a 15.4" business model, but what about the graphics, and what is this R business?

ATI x1100 mobility with a core2duo, if I'm not mistaken. I'm not so sure about the "R", though. Maybe it's a generational thing?

Asus NA will bring in F9J, not to undercut W7J, but to replace W5F. You will see F9J in the market in May, and W5F will phase out in the same time, and won't see W5F any more from mid June.

    F9J will be T5500, 7300 128M, 1024x1, 120G SATA, MSRP $1399.

I have not seen the F9J physically, but I did see the F9F sample unit. It looks not bad, but not as nice as W5F, I didn't measure it, but I FEEL it is thicker than W5F.
