    Hi peoples...

I've been looking at Notebooks recently and like the specs listed on the N50vc and N50vn. Can anyone tell me anything about the N-Series, are they new/old, has anyone got one? Why no talk of Asus N-series with 15" LED screen on these forums?

The specs i have been quoted:

    N50VN - FP024G
    2.5ghz - T9400
    4gb - 800Mhz
    500gb
    Bluray Drive
    15.4" LED Screen
    1gb Nvidia 9650GT
    Tv Tuner + Ionizer
    Vista Ultimate

    or

    N50VC-FP035G
    2.5ghz - T9400
    4gb - 800mhz
    320gb
    512mb Nvidia 9650GT video
    Tv Tuner + Ionizer
    Vista Ultimate

I'm concerned i feel like there's a fair few problems listed on this forum with Asus notebooks, Screen Bleed and Keyboard Lag for example, Am i better off waiting for the new Dell XPS 16" instead? Dell also have Onsite nextday warranty and Asus means sending away my notebook at my expense for days at a time in the mail should problems occur.

The VN will cost around $500 AUD more than the VC model..
(Blueray, 1Gb Video, 500Gb HDD) Worth it?

Basically these Asus and the Dell Studio are the only 15" LED based notebooks currently. All thoughts and suggestions welcome.

I can comfortably say I've never heard of those models before.

But I'll break it down for you: Does AU$500 = Blu-ray and 180GB more space? I personally think its rather expensive for just AU$500 but its up to you whether you think its worth it.

Forget the extra 512MB on the gfx card. It can only read up to 256MB of memory anyway.

Why do you say the Videocard cannot use more than 256Mb?

I tend to use a fair amount of graphics heavy software, so i was hoping that would at least give some headroom, But i am unsure how useful it would be.
Not really in need of bluray in the notebook, but perhaps when my desktop has a recorder it could be of use. But i think the Vc model is more likely at this stage, otherwise i may wait for announcement of new 16" XPS.

I cannot external paste links to the Asus website until i have made 15 posts.. :(

I was expecting some talk on these forums for the last few weeks or more...
Would like others opinions of them.... Doh!

As soon as i make 15posts i shall post the brochures and weblinks. :)

I'm guessing the American dollar RRP is around $1699-$1799 for VC model..

Thanks rfs830, but it seems the main two Asus website links didn't work.

Here is what it looks like for me: au.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=5&l2=26&l3=810&l4=0&model=2566&modelmenu=1
    So just copy/paste "au.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=5&l2=26&l3=810&l4=0&model=2566&modelmenu=1"

This is because 256MB is the maximum a 128bit video card (which the 9650 is) can use for some reason or another.

    Thanks RFS830

Yeah, it's a bit gimmicky really, but i guess as it's really a cooling feature, they may as well class it up a little... :) I wish LED Backlit Keyboards were an option and not just Air Purifiers however... :)

I wish i knew more on the LED screen, and if this "SHE" technology combined with LED, means decent battery life.

Anyone else notice the real numpad and not the compacted one Asus uses in so many of their 15.4"ers?

Yeah it does look decently sized compared to the M51 i looked at recently, I'm typing this from an MSI Wind, and a full size keyboard has never looked so good.. ;)

I may be placing an order this week.

I was looking to get and N10 as my everyday work laptop but depending on how much these are I may have to wait to see these. I would not mind a nice 13in laptop.

So I'm wondering if anyone has bought one yet?

I have some concerns after reading some reviews (I hope Notebook Review does review the N50 soon!!!!) And i would love some benchmarks results.

I want to confirm the screen res:

Is it really only 1280x800 and are the angles on the LED screen as bad as they are reported to be? Do Asus usually have different models with different res screens?

I have read the N50v's also do not support more than 4Gb and also will not support SSD either. As it would be nice to think the notebook could take more RAM and a SSD in 12months time.

There are a lot more models that have LEDs of the 15" form factor... a LOT... Dell XPS, Latitude E, Precision, Lenovo T, LG S510, Apple MBP, etc. BTW unless I see a somewhat scientific review, I'd call the ionizer a fake - at least from my personal testing of ionizers.

Thanks with a little digging there are some WXGA+ (1440x990) panels or WXGA (1280x800) so that's a plus as i would like the + screen model. But I am still a little worried by the angles of viewing on the screen as i can't see one until i have already paid/delivered, and reviews weren't good (apart from that page)

So a 3DMark of around 4764 @1280x800 for the VN Model. (GeeDude)
I guess a little faster with the T9400 that i was looking at. Are there any other models that are posting significantly higher scores in the same price bracket?

    @sgogeta4:

Yeah at the moment the XPS doesn't have an LED option here and is old anyway, the Studio does but the 256Mb Ati videocard is a little sparse for the price/performance. I'm trying to wait for a 16" XPS, but the Asus is currently the 2nd choice, and I'm not willing to wait forever.

Latitudes and Precisions are WAY too expensive and likely the same for Lenovo, Although i have not seen them here with LED. Apple is interesting as it has the LED backlit keyboard i would want, but it too is way overpriced currently here, and really for my needs.

I have a budget of no more than $2500 AUD. (under or around $1800 USD)
The Asus is basically the only other contender, and i do have some concerns in general with Asus.... (sigh)

I would go with the Asus...I'm going for another one, not sure which yet. The N units are brand spankin' new and not much time yet for reviews, etc...save one I think...

Better make sure the N50VC actually has the 9650M GT and not the 9300M GS, as according to the US website it has the slower card.

This would also account for the large price difference between the VN and VC.

Australia Asus is not reliable on their specifications, so do make sure you check this out before buying as there is a huge difference between these gfx cards.

If you are referring to Rick Harts website I believe the 9300 is a misprint.
    Yeah it's a 512Mb 9650GT in the Vc or a 1Gb 9650GT in the Vn...

As both are DDR2, it's not the fastest videocard ever anyway, A DDR3 version would be much faster and decent for the price. I would like to check one out in person this week, fingers crossed JB have them stocked here.

Why the HEY are they putting an ionizer on these things? I thought it was a joke when I read the description on Amazon. I'd never touch one of these if it's got that-has me wondering about Asus at all...

The main reason for a Ionizer is for improved airflow within the case thus causing lower temps for parts.

So then which would be a better buy for the price:

A MSI GX620 with the following specs:
    Core 2 Duo P8600 2.4GHz 3MB L2 1066MHz
    15.4 WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050)
    4GB (2x 2GB) DDR2 667 SDRAM
    nVidia GeForce 9600M GT w/512MB DDR3 VRAM
    320GB, 5400PRM SATA

    etc.

    or this notebook?

Both laptops go for the same price, but in my opinion the build quality on the MSI seems a heck of a lot better (being a mix of aluminum and plastic)

Also if I'm not mistaking the Geforce 9650M GT DDR2 should be around the same in performance to the Geforce 9600M GT DDR3? if so then the only upper hand the ASUS has over the MSI would be the fingerprint scanner.

Plus presumably no ionizer or air freshener or anything else weird on that MSI.

Does it have an LED backlight though?

No, but it has something called a VIVID LCD technology which seems to be a 3-dimensional graphics display.
