Since, in the UL series, only the UL50 is posted on the Best Buy web site and Theros123 is saying the model he saw had a backlit keyboard, which the ASUS source said it did not have, I am concerned he saw the U80 and not the UL80. Asus isn't doing us any favors with so many similar model numbers. I will be very interested in what Ubercool finds. It would certainly be great if the UL80 did have the backlit feature AND Best Buy was selling it.

I got some info in regards to the models, at least colour-wise haha.

    UL30A-A1/ UL30A-A2 : Silver
    UL30A-A3B : Black
    UL30A-X3 : Silver
    UL30A-X4 : Silver
    UL30A-X5 : Black

As for the backlit keyboard, I was told the UL series does not have it, but we'll see when people actually get hands on to the units.

Here is what I have found so far. Interesting, the versions with the Win 7 Pro have less memory. Also, the 15.6 inch versions cost less than the 14". The one I really would like is the Solid State drive version that boots in 15 seconds, but not for an extra $400.

    UL30A-X5 $680, 4GB, 500GB, Home Prem 64
    UL30A-A3B $790, 3GB, 250GB, Pro64
    UL30A-A2 $780, 4GB, 500GB, Home Prem 64
    UL80Ag-A1 $790, 4GB, 320GB, 210M, Home Prem 64
    UL80Ag-A2B $840, 3GB, 250GB, 210M, Pro 64
    UL80VT-A1 $849 4GB, 320GB, 210M, Home Prem 64
    UL50Ag $730, 4GB, 500GB, 210M, Home Prem 64
    UL50Ag-A1 replaced by A2
    UL50Ag-A2 $775, 4GB, 320GB, 210M, Home Prem 64
    UL50Ag-A3B $830, 3GB, 250GB, 210M, Pro 64
    UL50VT-A1 $830, 4GB, 500GB, 210M, Home Prem 64
    UL50VS-A1B $1280, 4GB, 160GB-SS, 210M, Pro 64

wait so the asus x5 comes with a 8 cell 4400mAh...while the
acer comes with a 6 cell 5600mAh battery?!
the acer is only able to hit 8+ hours on the 5600mAh. is it even possible for the asus x5 to hit 8 hours with only 4400?

For those who have pre-ordered from Amazon.com, what is your delivery date for those who chose one-day shipping with/without Prime? Will they deliver tomorrow? I guess I have no choice, since Best Buy does not carry the UL30A-X5 I want.

At the earliest, they will ship it out tomorrow, as they aren't legally allowed to break the release date until the 21st if sold online, 22nd if sold in store.

Ah too bad! So, the only possible way to get an ASUS from retail tomorrow is from Fry's? I'm not interested in the UL50 Best Buy offers.

can any1 help me on this.. im having a hard time figuring out which flavor of the UL series to get, however, i had one question..

on AMAZON the specs for the UL80Vt don't say anywhere that it has a gigabit port.. i was under the impression that the UL series did not have gigabit..

upon looking at the ASUS Website under the specs page, it says gigabit (10/100/1000).. and its not listed as "Optional" like the bluetooth is like we all know..

So does it in fact have gigabit or no? any1 know? that will help me make a decision for a pre-order :)

Edit: xoticpc and excaliberpc both list it as gigabit.. so it is? it also lists the UL30A-A2 as having gigabit.. any1 know for sure?

The difference is in the Whr rating.

Acer 6-cell: 5600mAh, 64Whr (I think; not sure of Whr)
    Asus 8-cell: 4400mAh, 64Whr (I think)
    Asus 8-cell: 5600mAh, 84Whr

I think for the U.S. market, the UL series do not have gigabit Ethernet. At least, that is the case for the UL30A model.

Xoticpc and Excaliberpc specs have been wrong before, such as wireless card brand and bluetooth.

My sources say that the UL20/UL30 only have a 10/100 LAN controller, while the UL80/UL50 have 10/100/1000 LAN controller.

Actually I recall one of the reviews on the UL series complaining that it was 10/100. Also, if you look at Amazon you will see the UL30-X5 and the A2. The X-5 is listed as 12.5 hours battery life and the other is listed as 16.5 so the price difference must be the battery.

I also don't like that Best Buy is so far only showing the 50. This is typical as they seem to favor the bigger screens. The dimensions of the 50 give it a desktop footprint as big as my old HP Pavillion. The difference is thickness where the Asus is half as thick, and the weight - 5.2 vs. 7.7 lbs.

The difference in the 30 to the 80 in size and weight is much more than the difference between the 80 and the 50. The 30 is 30% lighter and 22% smaller than the 80. The 80 is only 8% lighter than the 50.

I am now leaning towards the 30 and eventually will pop in a Solid State Drive. I really like that 15 second boot time.

hi everyone, i ordered the x5 ver yesterday and according to the amazon's email, its has been shipped and i'll be receiving it tomorrow. (one day shipping) Which is pretty amazing since i was assuming that they would ship it on the 22nd and i'll get it on the 23rd. but hey if its one day earlier im not complaining.

according to Justin W at xoticpc.com

"According to the information that’s been provided from Asus, both the ASUS UL30A-A2 & the ASUS UL80VT-A1 will have giagbit LAN ports, however, we will not be able to confirm this until the notebooks are available and in stock."

so i guess they both have gigabit? lets hope so

Hello, I am hoping everyone here can help me. I realize these Asus UL laptops are new and haven't even been released yet. But I have finally found a replacement for our Dell E1505 that is over 4 years old and I just fixed the hinge on it today with 3 small bolts.

Anyways, Does anyone know if the Asus UL50A series will be offered in the States in Silver? All I have found on Amazon and the one on Best buy is in black. I also see the UL30A in silver but that is too small.

It is weird because the Asus website shows these UL50A in silver...

    http://event.asus.com/2009/nb/ul_series/

There was another Asus page that showed these but I can't find it anymore. But those all showed silver and all I have seen so far is black.

I had been looking at the Acer Aspire timeline. But was glad that I found these Asus since they are dual core.

    Please help??? Thanks

Well, since my GF has absolutely no patience for this Win7 wait, all I could get out of her is tomorrow, so I went to Best Buy to look at that new HP dm3 with the Neo X2. It's an incredibly nice lappy, with an aluminum construction that reminded me of the MacBook Unibody design. Sorry to be leaving this thread. ;)

Now I am left wondering between the UL50Vt-A1 and the UL80Vt-A1.. I really like having a number pad for doing number crunching..

    UL50Vt-A1
Slightly larger screen but same resolution
    Number Pad
    500gb 5400rpm standard

    UL80Vt-A1
Slightly smaller screen but same resolution
    320gb 5400rpm standard

Go with the 14-inch one, folks. You'll really get tired of lugging that big beast around. It's no big deal to type numbers on a normal keyboard. :D

I dunno, ubercool. The difference in size/weight is tiny.
    ul50vt
    38.6 x 25.9 x 2.64 cm (W x D x H)
2.10 kg (with 4 cell battery)

    ul80vt
    33.8 x 24 x 1.40~2.68 cm (W x D x H)
2.0 kg (with 8 cell battery)

Sorry.. those are straight from Asus.. you can extrapolate from there..

I really need to see them in person before I buy, but I really want to buy something soon so I might have to live with unboxing videos.

AHH!! Decisions!! I think if they surprise us all with a UL30VT, it would blow these other two out of the water.

Come to think of it.. I am fine with the MBP 15.. and I think it's roughly the same size as the UL50Vt

    MBP 15 specs:
    Size and weight
    Height:0.95 inch (2.41 cm)
    Width:14.35 inches (36.4 cm)
    Depth:9.82 inches (24.9 cm)
    Weight:5.5 pounds (2.49 kg)1

Where are these silver 15" UL50 laptops? All I see are the black laptops.

Okay, I'm about to order the UL80VT-A1 from xoticpc but I have one question. Is it worth getting the AS5 on either to CPU or GPU? With an ultra-low voltage processor I am not really worried about the CPU overheating and the G 210M is such a lower power card I have a hard time seeing it overheating. Still, do you guys think it is better to be safe than sorry?

You know I just had this debate with myself today. After reading around.. I came to the conclusion that it really only matters with heavy duty overclocking where you need to squeeze out every watt of efficiency. Plus the price negates the fact that you're having someone open up your brand new laptop and take off the heatsink etc.. I don't the think the benefit sees the cost.

That was my personal conclusion, as a thrifty person in a tight economy. If you asked me the same question when I was making double what I make now a few years ago, I would probably splurge for every upgrade xoticpc has to offer including the ssd and the vidock.

P.S. Just got another confirmation from Justin W. at XoticPC that the keyboard is not backlit. I am losing hope for it, but I am still holding out for the chance that the keys are maybe UV.

The UL series doesn't have backlit keyboards, which makes sense as their more expensive counterparts do. If these UL series had BT, GBLan(I know the 80/50 do though), backlit keyboard, then they would kill the sales of the U and UX series.

ASUS is pretty well known to mass populate their notebooks with a large amount of different models per size category, then with more trims within each category. At one point in time they will have at least 30 different trims of notebooks, not counting the EEE series. Gah...

Ah.... So basically a refresh of the U80V, while being more expensive, should include the backlit keyboard that I so covet.. and perhaps even an upgrade to the 4570? Now it just gets more complicated.. but I can fit another couple of hundred into my budget so perhaps the U80V refresh is what I really want.

    Hello,

Does someone know the difference between the UL50Ag from Best Buy and the UL50AG from Amazon?

The one from Best Buy is UL50AG-RBBBK05 from Amazon UL50AG-A2.

They look similar in specs but I just don't know? I've never seen the A2 or A1 but from what I see the Best Buy one the palm rest is not shiny and the touchpad is not the same - doesn't have the bumbs on it.

    Any thoughts?
