i got a bsod on the first reboot but everything seems fine after that. Didnt really notice a change in the fan speeds from the 704. CPU z still reads ram at 266mhz any1 know whats up with that?

EDIT: o wait what am i supposed to look at for ram speeds the frequency for my ram on cpu z says 266.7mhz abd on the SPD section it says max bandwith is 333mhz with timing frequency at 200/266/333 is this normal. Im running dual channel.

Also anyone getting the 6x multiplier for the core speed on the processor? I think it has something to do with EIST and its supposed to go back up to 9x under heavy load. anyone confirm this?

    Hey cancer :

1.) Download ASUS update program.... ( it should contain a file AsusUpdt_V71003.zip, around 4.36 Mb )

2.) Download the ROM file of BIOS 801. save it to your pc.

3.) install and run ASUS update program, choose option update BIOS FROM FILE. ( locate where u saved the ROM file. ) Then flash.... Takes about 15 secs i think.

All this was done on windows, not DOS mode. Lemme know if u still have problems, I can email you the ASUS update program. ( around 5mb file... )

I'm pretty much a firm beleiver of this right now. It's not broke, and any update I've attempted to give it, does not even get off the ground. It's like the C90 is telling me that it is fine and that I shouldn't screw around.

Well.... First question I guess, and this is a rather simple minded question that I'm sure I already know the answer to; All I've got are blank DVD's, would I be able to use those to write the BIOS ISO that Ken posted?

    Yes.
Images that aren't compatible are those that are copy-protected (i.e, games)

The writting software (me suggests DVD decrypter) will make the conversion

Ok so i tried the new bios (burn the iso image on a blank disk at default speed using Nero express oem that came with the c90)

didnt test it much but fans are a bit faster now, switching from battery to standard mode inmediatly makes fans go faster. also it seems that the fans are faster during the boot up.

    battery mode is still quiet.

After new bios my gpu idles 65-67. Fans are always on but its interesting they are quieter. Old bios fans would speed up then come back down adn gpu would get hot and turn back on so they would be loud. THis way they are awlays on and are quieter.

well, yes they are quiet, but when I test the machine and put a huge load of stress on cpu & gpu, they get noiser as usual. So I guess the only difference is they are always on at low speed and maybe due to the vcore voltage change
    who knows :D

Well at first the ISO didn't work, but that's because I'm a moron.

Got the 801 BIOS installed sucessfully once I realized what I was doing wrong with the disc(s)....

I have to admit, I like the change. Quieter overall and cooler too. I like it.

Is it supposed to be a beta 1? I tried my burn and it says "Beware, this is BETA, it might not fix everything".

Man, I'm getting my 8600M back in 20 minutes max!

"***Please be aware: This BIOS is still a BETA version, it may or may not fix all of the known issues of C90S."

No it's not the beta, I just forgot to change the message when I was making the new ISO.

    OKay. Mine's now working!!!!

I did panic when I saw CHECKSUM FAILED at startup after lol.

I've yet to see the fans running though. My E4500 is detected correctly in the bios so it's not compatibility issue. The HDD section does get hot like hell during windows installation, and I'm on a Seagate 160GB 5400.3

EDIT: The fans are so hot I think my desk is gonna melt.

My gpu is still idleing in the 80's with the new bios. Its horrendously hot.

I dont know if its the card or poor connection to the heatsink, not that I have run it tho I dont think I can take the gpu off without damaging the thermal pads on the ram.

67 degrees is idle now. Though its clocking down to 150, 100. Fans are on alot more though but quieter. Tradeoffs.

My CPU is a 63 now, don't know about the GPU.

I guess I do hear the fans, but no wind comes. I didn't check if they were working or not.

I can't pass windows' 1st boot for whatever reason. It just never pass the loading screen (HDD light is also off).

    I'm reinstalling it.

I can also smell the heat. I do not like that XD

Well I did some open heart surgery tonight. Just like with my first unit I replaced the stock thermal compound on the cpu with a metal pad, and replaced the stock stuff on the gpu with AS5.

The CPU idle went from low 60's (62ish) to now low 50's (52ish) so it made a HUGE difference in cpu temps.

The GPU was idleing in the low 80's and its still in the low 80's at first it said 70, but it settled at 80. So its offical my card runs very very hot.

Not sure if we ever found out if the gpu fan speed is tied to the cpu fan speed or not. Meaning that if your cpu ran hotter it would cause all 4 fans to come on and keep your gpu cooler, but if you have a very cool cpu the fans wont come on so the gpu gets hotter.

If the 2nd way is how it works, that would be why my temps are the same for the gpu now even after putting better thermal compound on there, the cpu temps are so low now that the fans are nearly off. Even in overclock mode with a full load on wprime they dont stay on they go on and off from full blast becasue the cpu runs so cool.

Now if only Ken could say my card runs too hot and its defective and replace it with a GDDR3 version for me :p

I think you and me are complete opposites. My gpu is now 66, don't know about my cpu though but the fans are almost nearly on in their low sate which is audible in quiet room.

I bought my cpu oem and put AC5 on it.
I also Ac5'd my GPU which hovers below 70C with room temps 76-79 F now online (no gaming or cpu intensive).
But I noticed it drops significantly when using TAT on 80% or higher cpu usage b/c the fans kick in.
This is using the 704 bios, can't get the 801 to update which makes no sense b/c I updated before...
Cpu got to critical temps -82c- under 100% load TAT.
Retailers & forums have been more helpful than Asus, period.

Update: I tried using the ISO didn't work, will try FUdos...

I put my old Vantec LapCool2 back to use today, and my gpu temp dropped from a steady 81/82 while surfing, to a steady 77. I'd chucked it a long time ago because I couldn't tell it had worked on my old Ferrari.

I think Hollywood had the right idea....the bottom of this thing should be mesh like the bottom of a Stereo Amp. Probably isn't for several non technical reasons. Therefore, has anyone found a source for a spare 'bottom door' for the C90? I'd like to mod one myself, but would rather do it on a spare in case I goof it up :D Fans blowing up through those holes would have to have a significant effect.

@ Valex have you tried to use the 801 iso that Ken posted a bit back in the thread? That should be a lot more compliant than a flashing program in windows.

Oh did you decide to not sell it?

My cooler comes in tomorrow I'll post my new GPU temps with the holes. I'm idling below 80 most of the time (78 atm) with possible high 60's when there's a lot of free space below case. Before the mod I was idling well into the high 80's/& few 90's

I'm going to get a spare bottom panel throw a ultra slim fan in it and create a removable usb jumper power cable for the back. Then we'll see some real nice temp changes I'm sure.

The fans definitely seem to be cpu dependent. Too bad we couldn't create a bios controler with two temp parameters GPU & CPU, that would be excellent.

Cooling pad, or some other airflow to keep it cool, will do 2 things.

    1.) keep it from crashing
2.) keep the fans from turning into jet engines

This is assuming its the heat causing your problem like it was for me a long time ago.

Can you recommend a GOOD cooling pad for this laptop? One that might let me stay on gaming mode for more than 15 minutes. It seems that the heat just builds up over time and the fans aren't enough to keep up with it. I don't mind if the fans sound like jet engines, I am playing flight simulator :p but even with them running at full speed, it still blue screens.

Many people on here have the Zalman NC-1000 notebook cooler. I can't give a review on it as I use an 'old' Vantec Lapcool2....I may try the Zalman eventually.

EDIT: I just checked, they are still selling my model....it's lpc-305, the black one. Has power adapter, but is 1800 - 2600 rpm....moves more air than the Zalman, but I wish it was all aluminum ...the faceplate around the fans is, but rest is not.

Has anyone found that the 801 update fixed their "unplugging the power cord/switching to battery power and laptop freezes" issue was resolved? I'm still having the problem after the 801 update...guess I just have to get a really long extension cord so I can travel through my house.

I can run from battery fine (using 'Asus Certified' ram from Gentech) but can't get the wireless to connect. I've changed device manager not to turn off for power saving, no joy. I wonder if Turbo Gear is doing something here? Don't have time right now to check it further.

Man I feel so lucky, (knock on wood) I've had hardly any of the issue you guys are facing. I did get a BSOD when using the webcam the other day but I believe it was due to two programs competing for the web camera. Had a web chat open and tried to open the AMcapture prog. Oh and that memory leak from psqltray.exe 924MB ram hogged.

the only problem I have is GPU heating a bit in idle and FAN control really suck. It's like the desktop-game alternation is done in the other side (playing games= quiet, back to desktop after=747). While I pause a game, idle is like 68 at 475/400.

Have you set up a cooling pad yet? We're still dealing with that cool CPU dependent fan, when I'm not doing anything cpu serious, like this for instance, I just switch into power saving mode with +++brightness and things really cool down, I'm at 58/47 at this moment.
