This may have been posted before, but I just recently saw this.

In the article, it says that ASUS' R&D department is working on something that will allow Express Gate to play DVDs/CDs by 2008.
Has this already been released or is it just a rumor that never came to fruition?

It depends what was meant by play DVDs/CDs. Express Gate allows access to the DVD/CD drive for playback of audio files and picture files, but it doesn't play back video files (or DVD video) except for videos playing from Internet sites (like YouTube).

Hopefully they'll add a video/DVD player to an update of Express Gate in the near future.

The feature to play DVD Video is what I believe the site, and I was referencing. I think HP's QuickPlay software has something like that, and I would love to see ASUS' software be comparable to that.

ExpressGate is useless. It consumes power significantly faster than Windows.

Interesting, that's the first time I see this mentioned. If that happens, probably it doesn't implement power management properly.

It would be useful if other people could test this, to confirm it's not isolated to one machine.

Er what exactly does Express Gate do and how do I use it? I have a M70VM which apparently has it installed and I can't work out how I use it...

EG is a pre-boot Linux variant Asus came up with that you can use to access (8 sec boot time) certain productivity things without having to get all the way into Vista. I believe you access it by hitting a certain button on the notebook instead of the main power.

Check out Asus' product pages for a more complete discussion, or look at the resellers like GenTech or BTOTech as they might have details.
