Hey,
I've been having problems with Hcontrol crashing and I found this post in the Asus forums. Anyone else with this problem? Any suggested fixes? (Besides uninstalling the new drivers and using the old and unreliable intel drivers? And I've already tried uninstalling the ATK drivers and installing the updated ones)

i have the same problem (Asus A6Va). All people tell me the same: update the HCONTROL driver to the latest version, but that doesn't work for me. does anybody have another solution?
PS i'm using HControl (version 8 nov 2005 of the asus site and Intel wireless pro Version 10 something) -
I don't know what Hcontrol is, since I haven't bought an Asus laptop yet (soon!), but, if it's some sort of wireless manager, which is what you guys are kinda making it sound like, why not disable it and just let windows manage your wireless?
-
hcontrol is the application that controls the fn buttons on asus laptops. if it doesn't work we can't disable wireless :S
-
It looks like intel's latest driver set may have a different API for controlling power on/off - note the totally changed interface... so we'll probably just have to wait for Asus to build a new version of HControl unless someone wants to try to hack the current one.
-
Count me in on this problem. I have a V6Va and just last night updated to the latest/greatest Intel wireless driver. After I boot/restart and as the Windows desktop appears I get the message "HControl has encountered error...". Have tweaked around with it to no avail (reinstall driver, etc). Hopefully Asus will have a fix soon because that message on every boot is somewhat annoying.
-
What if we simply disable the Hcontrol? You can simply use latest Intel Pro to disable the wireless internet. What else do you lose that you cannot perform otherwise?
I found the old IntelPro Wireless does not work after waking up from sleep. That is why I upgraded. -
You cant use any of the FN buttons no wireless control. maybe no volume. i havent run into the issue because i avoided it and only use asus drivers.
-
Could you please let me know what you mean by "only use asus driver"?
-
Does using PROSet have any advantages over just using the Windows built-in wireless manager?
-
My advice is drop the intel drivers...your better off either using the ones supplied by ASUS or letting XP control wireless. Personally I have been using xp now for about a year..no major issues, or minor ones for that matter....the wireless buttons still work and its nice not having to have another process running!

I get the same problem with my M5n. Strange thing is that it worked for a while... Maybe I hadn't restarted or something, but the FN button worked for a while, then one day it decided to stop working and error on me every time I tried to start the process manually. I really like the wireless stability this driver build gives, but it doesn't play nice with other software. I'm going to try to install newer atk drivers, see if that helps, but probably won't because asus is slow to get new drivers out, and the v10 intel drivers are fairly new.
-
I found the latest IntelPro version 10+ works extremely well after waking up from one night sleep. While the IntelPro version 9 does not work well at all after wake up - I had to restart it.
But IntelPro v10 does not work with Hcontrol, so I found fn+volume does not work.
So there is no way I will go back to IntelPro v9 which works well with Hcontrol. What is the other option I have? Use Window's own wireless control?? -
Proset v.9.0.4.0 with driver v.9.0.4.8 is the last stable combination. Version 10 of Proset is the one that is incompatible with HControl.
-
What is wrong with XPs own wireless control?
-
I have the same problem with a brand-new W5F. Intel's ProSet software, even when Windows is managing wireless, causes random crashes, either when the wireless status pop up is displayed, or after you turn on wireless with the FN/F2 toggle, it will crash on any Taskbar dialog box.
It's a huge pain in the ass, and save for that, this W5F is one heck of a fun machine. Wish there was a fix for it, and I don't really want to go back to old Intel driver. -
Another option is to uninstall everything else in the Intel ProSet software except for the wireless driver. You would, of course, will need to rely on Windows afterwards to manage the wireless connection.
-
How would you do that? I wish that Intel had a way to turn off taskbar icon, because it's the alerts that are causing freezes.
-
I suppose it was the same problem when I upgraded my driver form 8 to 9. The stock M5N ATK0100 driver just won't work with it. I had to get one from an M6 or something for it to work properly.
I hope Asus can catch up on the drivers quicker, although there's no sign that any version beyond 8.0 will be supported officially on the M5N. -
Is there a way I can temporarily disable Hcontrol so I don't see the Hcontrol error message at startup? I like IntelPro latest driver.. Thanks!
-
Where do we dl the older drivers? Got the ones off asus, and it looks like they were the new 10 version, which is causing the hcontrol issue.
-
Uninstalled 10.0 from the add/remove programs. Tried to install the 9x version, and during the install, says a newer version of the softwareis already installed, and it cancels. So much for trying 9.0 again =/
-
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
Did you do a System Restore to before the 10.0 install, and then try to reinstall the 9.0 drivers? Sometimes the SR can remove the registry keys that new driver uninstalls miss, that can mess up reinstalls.

Any updates to this issue?
-
Yes, my W5F is now completely stable after doing a complete reinstall. So, can't blame the Intel PROset drivers anymore. Except that the Intel status window still likes to hang around when you try to close it, and requires a forced end. But that's better than freezing.
-
I also have the same problem with V6v after installing the newest Intel PROset software v. 10. My solution: remove it from then Add/remove program and install the PROset wireless drivers (v.9) from Intel in the factory utility CD. Then reinstall the ATKACPI driver.

Has anyone found a fix yet so as to be able to use the latest intel drivers, and get the atk0100 to work without a HCONTROL error on loading windows xp???
-
Guess Not.
-
asus just released the new intel wireless on their site on Aug. 24, I'm gonna download and see if that will fix the problem
-
works fine wtih my w7j
-
Works ok on v6j
-
I'm having the same problem on my Z71V, but I can't seem to find the ASUS version of the Intel v.10 driver on the asus site.
I don't know why it's so hatrd to search for things on there but I would appreciate it if someone would give me a link to the driver.
Thanks -

You can download the driver from Intel website, it will work for this. We tried to use a Asus' driver cd to install that driver for the previous built-on model. After doing this from downloading an update driver, it made it work perfectly.
Cheers -
With the new ATK utility, HControl didn't crash my V6V... HOWEVER, I can't connect to a wireless hotspot!!!
Bad ASUS bad!!! -
I had the exact same problem with my Asus A6KM. Now i downloaded the latest ATK0100 ACPI drivers and now my wireless system seems to work flawlessly.
You can download the last drivers here: ftp://dlsvr02.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/A3Ac/ATK_XP_060823.zip -
Hi all. Today I downloaded some of the "latest" drivers from the Asus site. After installing, I had the same problems...none of my function buttons would work. I reinstalled my ATK0100 drivers after reading this thread and all of my function buttons except the wireless function button worked again. Now I get an error when I press the wireless function key "Unable to load the INTEL Muroc API, This function need to install INTEL Proset utility". I am using Intel PROset/Wireless Software 9.0.2.1 which I believe I downloaded from the Asus site. Although it isn't the end of the world, it would be nice if the wireless function button worked. Any suggestions??? Thanks.

So what is the program name for the 5 buttons above the keyboard? I installed instantFun, and I see Hcontrol running in task manager. However, the only button works is the wifi one, the other four doesn't do anything when I press them.
I have an A8Js btw. -
if i download the new ATK drivers and intel wireless drivers from the asus website, should I add/remove my existing drivers. My Hcontrol.exe won't work anymore either.
-
Just wondering, if I let windows manage my wireless connection, do I remove all of the Intel wireless software, and just leave the intel wireless drivers intact?
-
Where do you get the latest HCONTROL at?
-
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I beleive it's located in the ACPI driver which can be located here.
