Hello guys its me ROT112, i been on these forums for a while but have been pretty inactive lately.

I just recently bought a Asus G51VX RX05 and am excited to see what it's like. I do have some question that i hope you Asus Enlightened members would be able to answer.

Can i upgrade the CPU to a Quad Core such as the Q9000 or Q9100 mobile CPU's. I have a X7800 on hand that i will install into it the second it gets here anyways but i would just like to know if it is future proof for the quadcore.

Can i upgrade the GPU to a future MXM 3.0B type GPU. I would like to upgrade the Gpu in maybe 2 years or so and i would like to know if you can upgrade it to any mxm 3.0b type gpu from Asus.

The specs the computer will have once i'm done with it the day it gets here are :

    Intel X7800
    2x 320gb HDD's
    GTX 260M
    4GB Ram

What do you guys think and how will the laptop perform once i do the upgrades. And can someone please answer my questions. Thank you and looking forward to join the Asus ppl here at the forums. Still love my gateway :).

You most emphatically cannot upgrade to a quad.

Since Asus uses proprietary slots and the best card of that format is currently the GTX 260m (The 5870 is regular, right? Eh.), no upgrading in the foreseeable future. I would just say a simple no, you cannot upgrade.

Hmm thanks for the info Forge. Though what are the chances of Asus releasing a Quad Core supported bios in the near future.

If the 5870 is released with the same slot as this one i can theoretically upgrade to it right.

It's not the BIOS that's the problem. I have the BIOS taken straight from a quad-capable G51. The problem is the motherboard revision is different.

There's an issue if the BIOS will recognize it all. Also, the G51 doesn't exactly have the best cooling for an underclocked GTX 260m, so a MR 5870 is going to fry it.

GTS/GTX 360m, maybe, now that I think about it.

According to Notebookcheck, (not the most reliable source, but still), the 5870's power consumption is 60 watts compared to 75 watts for the GTX 260M, although the undervolted GTX 260M in the G51 notebooks might have a similar power consumption.

I am OC'ing the GPU back up to normal rates once i get it using nVidia over clock tool. I have a notebook cooler so no no need to have it under-clocked.

Or you can mod the laptop. Copper'n'drills are your friends. Been running semi-reference clocks (550/1375/825) for months and I have no problems. I probably don't even need a cooler anymore but I use it out of habit.

The G73 gets comparable temperatures to some "special" G51vx even with a dual fan setup. I don't think raw TDP is everything in determining heat output.

If anyone has a 5870 to toss away I'd be happy to be the guinea pig.
