As of today, pricing on the W5 and V6 has changed. I'm not sure what's up Asus' sleeve, but this does help explain why it seemed the W3w was so darn cheap.
W5a - $1,649 - $100 drop
W3v - $1,899 - New.. but we all know how the price on this changed
V6v - $1,999 - $200 drop
W1n - $2,199 - $200 drop -- due to the refresh in mid to late May
On a side note... Asus' official specs now read the W5a's integrated graphics as being able to secure as much as 128mb of system ram to use towards video..... That's probably if you have 1.25gb of memory in the system... but it's good to know they some of the rumors are apparently true.
Thanks,
Justin

wow! suddenly the v6 is back in my list...I have been seriously looking at the nc8230/nw8240, but with this price, it is difficult to ignore. Thanks Justin for the update.

The W5 is out, and in stock at many fine retailers across the usa.
And yes, it has bluetooth. -

That's good to know. I'm thinking W5a or W3V. And then I think I should wait for the Z63 since I don't need everything those two have, but then I think maybe I should just get the basic M5n.
I just can't make up my mind...

Very VERY good news... the V6V is sure one sweet computer!...with the exception of all of those holes on the palmrest.
If only the prices could drop even more... [8)][|)]

One thing I realized again this morning is the V6 doesn't have the brushed aluminum lid like the W1/W3........ I really do like that. The V6 has a magnesium lid that's painted....... it looked like the V6 got the aluminum in the palmrest.. and the W3 got it on the lid.... anyway... both are hot systems.
Thanks,
Justin

that's a good price for the V6V. Sneaking under the $2,000 price point is a nice ease mentally for justifying a laptop purchase [

Just to clear this up.. because a few people just IMed me about this.
The V6's lid is magnesium..... it's painted.... it's not brushed aluminum becasue that would have been slightly heavier.... and the V6 is all about being light weight. Either way they both look good... but it's not like the V6's lid is junk compared to the W3.... it's just a different material.
Thanks,
Justin

This industry moves way to quickly to do more than estimate what's going to happen a month down the road. To be honest, if you're not ready to buy, don't even worry about it. If you're waiting to buy till it hits a certain price.... don't bother. What Asus usually does is make upgrades to the unit... whether it's cpu, hard drive, ram, optical drive.... and keep the system at the same price. That is why the recently "price drop" came as a huge surprise. This isn't something that is going to happen often. Asus is just trying to fine tune every aspect of their line from warranty to marketing, etc before summer hits.
I guess the moral of this is... if you're not ready to buy the V6 at the price it is now, look at something else. Most likely in August it'll be the same price but might come with more ram and say a bigger serial ata hard drive and maybe the next tier cpu (if a faster cpu debuts, the cost of the cpus will drop and Asus will just bump up).
That's going to be the best "prediction" you're going to get.
Thanks,
Justin

What do you think the price of a v6v will be by mid-august?
Anyone think it might drop to 1600USD? 1700? -
Probably it won't drop that much. You never know though. Anyone know if theres ever gonna be a Asus Ensemble notebook with a 6600 128 mb graphics card, or something equivalent?
-
If 3 months down the line, the v6 has a better processor at the same price, won't there be an option for a slower processor and thus save some $?
I'm just asking cause I know with the IBM T42, you can choose between different speed processors (and the price changes correspondingly). Also, same with Dell.
So, ASUS doesn't do different configurations? -
On proportable.com theres the "Built on Asus" section and the "Asus Ensemble" section. With the built on asus you can customize the processor, ram, hard drive, etc. With the ensemble section you can only get one version.

no.. if you want different configurations, you go with the completely custom line of "built on asus" models..... That's part of the whole point of what Asus has done. Their market is small and they can only logically bring over once configuration of one notebook at a time.
When prices drop and it's time for them to reorder (hence they've run out of stock) ... they'll bring in a new configuration and probably keep the price the same. So, they won't bring that in until the current configuration is sold out....... Now.. if some dealer is unlucky enough to be holding a lot of stock at the time the new configuration comes out....... then you might find a deal..... but thats it and usually those of us who do heavily stock these systems know about these changes far enough in advance that we can judge our stock and know what we have and when we can get it all unloaded....... it's not always perfect... either we have extra stock left over, or we're sold out for a week or so as something new is coming in....... so that sort of covers it.
Thanks,
Justin

I see... thanks. Are there any "built on asus" models that use the v6v casing and screen? I like the size of the non-wide screen screen. I also like the look of it. Taking at a quick look at proportable.com, you don't seem to offer any computers built on the v6v. I'm looking for a 15 inch with higher than a 1024x768 res that is as thin as possible.

No..... there won't be a barebone built on the V6.... there will be one built off the general design of the W3 and W1's at some point hopefully in the next month.
So, you're looking for a 15.1" SXGA notebook, is that correct? Because nothing that Asus is going to put out, other than the V6 is really going to suit your needs exactly.
Thanks,
Justin
