ok so i was able to purchase my G72 for a very low NIB price of $700 and i was searching for a new CPU to swap in....and I found a qx9300, q9000, and a q9100. all of these say they support the PM45 chipset.

now for my question...are all the spec sheets and CPUz leaving out the 'm' in the Mainboard->Chipset section or is this a different chipset?

Bestbuy G51 dont take quads, but on the G72, there were 2 retail options the one with P8700 and an online Q9000, but im not sure if the P8700 version supports Quads, or if will take a QX9300, i would recommend to go into the Official Asus G72GX Owners Lounge and check with any owner if they have changed the cpu, specially P8700 owners.

I think what he's trying to tell you is that ASUS has been known to make the dual core version only support dual core CPUs regardless of the chipset support.

All indications are that if you own the dual core G72 you can only upgrade to a T9900 or one of the x series extreme dual core CPUs.

    Cheers,
