The last word on the U5 was the Asus North America had decided not to bring them into the US, something about the touchpad was what I believe Justin said at the time.

It would also compete with the W5/W7 and Z35...

This has a core 2 processor and is only 3lbs, 12" screen - can't find much else in that category.

I don't know about the weight. If it didn't have an internal optical drive, maybe, since the single spindle 12" S5 was 2.8 lbs. If it does have an optical drive, I would expect it to be closer to my dual spindle Z33Ae at 1.55kg/3.4lbs.

The initial press release on the U5 (in its original Pentium M variation) was in November 2005... It's already a year old... If it isn't already in the US, it won't be here.

It's a question of demand - everyone wants widescreen in the US now. So they have the Z35 and W7 as 13.3", the W5 as 12.1", and the S6 as 11" widescreens... Those are all dual spindle systems, with weights accoardingly.

The S7 has been announced as a single spindle 11" to truly follow up the S5, but I won't even speculate on a release date in the US. It will be here when it's here.

For the Chinese market, people just want a laptop... They don't "have to have" widescreen... So a 12" regular ratio is fine there.. But to put it out now in the US would be suicide.

Which is unfortunate, since I think regular ratio has its benefits at the smaller sizes. I'm glad I have a Z33 at its size/weight instead of the Z35. If a used S5n came around at the right price I might just buy that too...
