Check it out. Who wants to make one?

*edit* this could probably be moved to a diff forum... but I spend too much time in the Asus forum. Plus this is a mistake Asus seems to make on all of their laptops.

It's not a mistake at all. It works great. If you use an external mouse then just push the laptop back a little.
Your version will restrict airflow and probably cut/scratch you. -
I'll cut/scratch you!!
Soooo many people complain about the right hand vents. While I fully agree with your theories about air flow and cutting/scratching... I was thinking of making it with something other than razor blades and making the angle of deflection just enough to pass your mouse hand.
valid points though! -

Mike,
You know what.. that's at leaset one of the more thoughtful things I've seen brought to this forum and would like to commend you for taking some time and showing an example of what you think would work instead of just *****ing about an issue like other may.
I would have to agree huskyfan though in that the exhaust on all of Asus' laptops are not only well thoughtout, but have developed over the years and are really sitting in the best spot for the design of the laptop, for normal use. Yes, mouse use could be annoying and your laptop is held close and you like to extend your right arm to use an external mouse, but that is not a common use as most people use the touchpad, especially as they've gotten more advanced and people have gotten used to them. However, to use a mouse as a right-handed individual with an extended arm, your wrist is going to get a concentrated blow of some awfully hot air if your system is set in performance mode...... that isn't comfortable and I've done tests to see exactly what situations one would be in to really need to be set up in such a way and it is annoying, but mouse use is the last thing a notebook is set up for..... the notebook isn't even set up for use on a desk, while always plugged in.
In terms of your design, the flow wouldn't be restricted that much, but I still think the air is going to bother you if you're using a mouse at around the location I think you would. If right now, your wrist is getting hit with the exhaust, putting that air at a 45 degree angle would still probably hit your finger tips... and more than a 45 and I think the air would really start to hang around the notebook too much and eventually cause some problems.
Good effort though. -
Solution for which Asus laptop? I still can't figure out the scratch .. sorry.

On the serious, I think a j-shape duct would be better, as it might direct the air better. If you're going to be doing that though, it might be better to just use a cooling pad or whatever, and a piece of cardboard (or similarly structural paneling) to deflect the air around your mousing hand. You can even use a part of a box of your favorite cereal. It will remind you to eat something during your marathon gaming (or photoshopping) sessions.

I dont think any redneck methods will work to well.
-
You could just wear one of these on your mousing hand.
-
I like the idea of a J duct. If we're talking about the same thing, you wouldnt have to worry about angle of deflection, you could litteraly aim the exhaust directly away from you.
I could write an essay on this subject, but the simple fact remains, the right hand exhaust problem does exist and ufortuneately, an oven mitt is not the solution! -
Ha ha Love the Glove!!!
When I first saw the sketch I thougt it would be a good ides, but when I looked closer at where the hot air comes out, they pass a through heatsinks that run parallel to the direction of airflow, and any sort of deflector on the end is going to create resistance on the air flow, which mean it wouldn't run as efficiently.
My point being is..... that if we restrict the airflow, even by a small amount. means the fans would have to work harder to push out the hot air and keep the system cool, the means that the fan would be spinning faster and louder to do the same amount of cooling.
or even worse it could be like the mac book which has the same ATI X1600 and relies mostly on passive heating and the chassis get extremly hot.
I see the hot air comming out as a as a good thing just because it keeps the system cool, more heat that comes out, meens a cooler chassis
I have just gotten into the habbit of placing the laptop a bit further away so that the mouse sits beside the Express card slot and out of that way. -
You know what you could do with the slats, is to make them movable( kinda like in a car air vent) with a movable latch to open and close them. Close position is when in mobile mode and open when working on notebook.

Another Lefty here, but with a right handed mouse...
If you wanted yo use the original design, a small fan in there would probably do the trick. I have to admit, I had never had the fan bother me on my V6j when using a mouse. While at my desk, I built my own custom cooling pad. It isn't done yet (version one is, but it looks horrible and isn't nearly as nice as version two). Long story short it has two fans, one pushes air to the cpu/gpu/ram area, the other pulls air away from the HDD. Its also angled to get the screen to a better place. Maybe I will work on it more or post some 3d mockups I did. -
Version 2.0...... and it is still free......
its actually quite good how well this works, it doesnt obstruct the airflow comming out and it seems like just enough to deflect the hot air upward and over your hand.
and did I mention.... its free!!! -
wow NZwaverider, that's a nifty design!
i like version 2.0 more because there's less chance of it getting blown off or something.
BUT, i think it'll be better (at least, a new learning experience) if you switched from your dominant right hand mouse to a left hand mouse. mainly for two reasons:
1. exercising a different part of your brain is a good thing!
2. you can brag about being 'ambidexterous' hehehehe
and you're getting a rep for the v2.0 design. that's some quick thinking. -
