Odd news today, Newegg just jacked up the price on the X6 by $150 bucks. Just yesterday it was 1149.99 after rebates, today it's 1299.99 after rebates.

Strange. You'd think the price would be getting lower as they try to get rid of these old models with the G51 coming out and all.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220483

EDIT: they've jacked it up again since my first post a couple of hours ago: it's now 1349.99 after $100 rebate, limit 1 per customer

EDIT: Now it's 1449.99 after $100 rebate, limit 1 per customer

NE pricing is famously flexible - they often will reduce item pricing for a couple of days to try and move various products, then return to normal price.

As for clearing out old product and reducing prices - NE has already purchased these models from Asus and so has their own distributor cost and overhead that have to be cleared so they aren't sold at a loss. Notebooks are well known to only have ~5% profit margin, and often less.

Asus is running the $100 MIR (as they often do for those models less than stellar sales figures or overstocked inventory) for product that Asus wants to get cleared out of the retail channel so they won't be competing with and/or cannibalize sales from the new updates (i.e. the G51) arriving in the near future.

Previously, they were limiting sales of the 1149.00 units to one per customer, but they have removed that limit. My guess is that their supply of X6's and reseller's supply of G50vt's in general is now so low that they can get the extra cash.

    I expect we'll see a G51 going for 1399.00 within a week.

Thanks guys. These are sound arguments. The price was stuck at 1149.00 for awhile so I was caught off guard when I saw the price go up. I was guessing that it might have something to do with the free W7 upgrade on friday. I know many people have been putting off buying new computers in June because of this.

Yeah prob. But I'm starting to second guess myself about the G51 after all this talk on the other thread about the heat issues. I'm still considering buying the G50... but I dunno after this $150 increase. It's probably best to just wait and see. I don't need a new laptop until late august anyway so I have plenty of time. :)

Talk about heat issues seems to be bordering on hysteria, given the Best Buy RX5 is the only and cheapest model anyone has purchased. Its too soon to tell anything at this point.

agreed. If Sunny and the others start melting their thighs/desks because of this thing then I won't buy it. Otherwise I'll wait until CNet and the others get a hold of one of these babies and performs their testing. yeay.

zeedee11, I think it's not so much that people have been putting off buying new computers, but the manufacturers have been reluctant in releasing new laptops prior to the Win7 upgrade.

Less releases = less motivation for people to buy new laptops.

yah I jumped on that $1150 deal. It was a tough call with the Windows 7 upgrade coming soon and the G51's, but I knew this would be a very limited offer. happy so far.

Personally I could not see spending close to $1500 on a 9800m GS laptop. Just does not seem worth it too me. Plenty of better choices out there.

did you do delivery confirmation to ensure they received it. if so, their rebate form represents that "Rebates checks will be mailed in 8 weeks of postmarked date"

They just sent me an email saying they are processing my rebate request :D

Also, they just jacked up the price another $150 to $1450 after MIR.

Wooot, I jumped on it when it was $1150 after MIR!!!

This thing must be selling really well lately for them to do this.

Man, makes me feel extra good. Nothing like a fantastic bargain.

Trying to sell them for as much profit as they can, before the model becomes obsolete.

That'd be my guess, at least. But I think they raised it up just a bit too much, seeing as no one is really even going for the G50s now that the G51 is out/just around the corner.

I saw the F50SV for 899$ CAD (Newegg Canada) on Father's Day. Monday morning it was at 1099$ and today it's at 1299$.

Too bad, I want that lappy; should have jumped on it when I had the chance. :( I still have hopes for July 1st (Canada day)...

That doesn't really make too much sense, especially since they now limit the purchases to 1 per customer.

If they were just desperate to get rid of them, they'd have dropped them down to $950 after MIR and set no purchase limit.

Weird, when I checked, the limit to 1 wasn't there. I guess they added it again.

I guess people are/were buying it for college who didn't know the newer models were coming out, so they thought it they'd jack up the price, they'd make more profit before they stopped selling the model.

I personally don't think what newegg is doing makes much sense, because like I said, most people won't spend the same amount on the G50 when the G51's going to be out.

any word on price/specs/releasedate for the newegg g51? I'm really concerned that it's gonna be even more expensive than this inflated g50 is now. In that case I might end up buying bestbuy's inferior machine :-\

Very few computer buyers stay up on this stuff like us geeks do, so I don't think that the upcoming arrival of the G51 plays as much of a role in the sales of the G50 as you may think.

I stay away from physical Best Buy, and its not on the website so I doubt its selling very well.

On top of that, the Best Buy ASUS machines only carry a 1 year warranty and have no insurance like the online ones. I'd wait till it hit the web if I was to buy one.

Last week it was selling for $ 1149.00 and that wasn't the el cheapo version with a one year warranty.

You have to think the Newegg has so few models left that they are banking on a handful of impulse buys or poorly informed customers in the next couple of days.

Can anyone confirm the exact specs of the G51 at Best Buy?

I ask because the base G51 is supposed to have a Core 2 Duo, not a Core 2 Quad. The quad is supposed to be for the higher models. (X5 instead of X1 for example).

    G51 is a Core 2 Duo, 2.0 GHz.

The quads/higher clocked Duos will be from online resellers.

I talked to a guy at my best buy today. He said they've sold five G51's this week. They're getting more Tuesday. However, the display model was labeled as a G51 but I checked the control panel and it said it was a G60. So I was confused. I didn't actually have time to measure the screen. Also, does anyone know when the quad core versions of the G51 will be available.

    ^Read above.

Thanks for the info then, Scyiik! G50VT-X6s are going for $1400 on EBay so I was about to scalp mine and then use the $ to buy the G51, but if its only a Duo AND has no insurance, I'll pass until this machine is too old.

The X6 is still an awesome machine! The GPU'll hold up for a while, CPU is good, and everything else is built nicely. I was going to get it but held off.

I would totally recommend passing till yours gets outdated, because as of right now you got it for a good price, it's powerful, and it's just less hassle overall.

it's not, it's got a faster processor that the x5 from best buy. also, newegg has a tendency to sometimes leave out info (whether on purpose or accidentally) so it probably still has the 3 year parts/labor warranty, and the 1 year that's listed on newegg is the accidental damage warranty (for which 1 yr is standard for ASUS products).

also, newegg deactivated the b1, so they're probably hoping that people (those who don't pay attention at least) will mistake the x6 for the b1, and the X8TW for the x6.

screen is the same as the G51 right?

how does the 9800M GS compare to the 260M in real life gaming situations.. is it noticeably worse?

The 260M is a fair amount more powerful than the 9800M GS, and still more powerful than the 9800M GTS.

It's nothing huuuge, but you will notice a more FPS or higher settings.

If I had the choice, I'd wait/go for the 260, but that's just me. Depending on what games you wanna play, it might not matter or make a difference for you.

Yeah the GTX 260M is definitely faster, but I'd wait until the higher G51 hits the net because that P7350 CPU in the BB one is going to hinder it significantly.

Exactly! That's why I, and most people I assume, are avoiding the BB G51. I really wanted that one, but the CPU kills it.

And then there was the G71...but hearing all the issues with that one, now it looks like I'm waiting some more, haha.

    I couldn't agree more. They're pretty bad.

and i agree with the people saying to wait for the g51 to hit online stores, b/c it should definately have a better processor and warranty that way. however, if you're on a budget of about $1000 or need to get a laptop sooner, the g50vt-x8tw might be the better option, b/c when g51 hits the online stores it'll probably be a few hundred more (which is more than worth it if you've got the money, and can wait until then to get a laptop). that's just my opinion though.

    ik about the CPU but

999.00 for a laptop with this amazing GPU its really worth

yeah the cpu its pretty weak but even if i get the newegg with the i.e. t9600 @ 2.6 (idk for sure) for about 1.5k... yeah thats a great deal but i would still change the cpu to a quad (Q9100)

so the CPU doesnt really matter
