    Hello there,

I am proud to say I just received my Asus N81Vp-d2 from B&H one week ago tomorrow. So far, it has been a great notebook.

Specs wise it is powerful (T9600, ATI 4670, 7200rpm HD) and I got an amazing deal on it.

Anyway, the "problem" or issue that I am having with it, is keyboard flex. First off, is Asus known for having this problem (its my first Asus laptop). It is quite disappointing to say the least. It is a very poor keyboard. I don't mind the design to much, or anything like that, but it is loud and has a lot of flex. Maybe it's just this model?

For a temporary fix, I added small spacers underneath the keyboard underneath the most troubling regions... (Caps Lock, A, Q, Z, Esc area). Which helped a lot.

I think this fix can be longterm, but if at your discretion, I might need to ship it back. If it is adviseable to do this, should I send it to B&H, or to Asus directly?

Maybe this is just common with this Asus laptop and a design flaw in the actual construction... and sending it back will do no good.

    What do you guys say?

    Thanks!

The keyboard flex isn't that bad, its an older machine in terms of the keyboard, that's why they went for chicklet keyboards. I am looking at and it does not say 4670 just 4650 for a budget card it puts nvidia to shame. For the price its an awesome little workstation, but too bad no blu ray drive.

    Hello freedom16,

As the owner of the laptop, and having it in hand-- I know it is the 4670 :). B&H is wrong in saying 4650, it is actually the 4670.

The keyboard flex, I am saying is quite severe. Yes, while it is older style keyboard instead of the newer style (I have another laptop with that style, flat/'chicklet' style) it is still quite poor. I have had other laptops with this style keyboard and they never had this issue. With the spacers I have put into it, it is fine and perfectly usable. I guess my main question is should I invest the time and effort in trying to get a new one / get it repaired if it is a manufacturers defect?

    Thanks.

My initial unit had a really bad keyboard: keys on the left side would make a loud noise, and flexed horribly.

I had Asus replace it under warranty and all is well again.

So should I return it? And through Asus Warranty then?

You should definitely get it fixed. Whatever's easier/faster for you: either exchange it with the place you got it or have Asus fix it for you. In my case, Asus has a service center in my city so it was fast for me to have it fixed.

Good point. Thanks for your advice... Considering you were able to get a new one without flex then I will definitely pursue getting mine fixed. Thank you.

No problem freedom16! The keyboard is fine with the spacers, but since its brand new, and still under warranty / still returnable I will work on getting it fixed / replaced this next week. Thanks for the help.
