It's because their website is horribly out of date. As usual.

In addition, many websites that have lists of Asus notebooks won't list the S96J or Z96J i.e. memory um.."fitter" on Crucial's website.

it isnt a real asus laptop .
asus has nothing to do with the s96j .repairs are handeld by your reseller and intel .
dont really know how people think that it is asus .the barebone is made by tyrian .and other parts come from different brands as chosen by your reselller.mayby the plans come from asus .

if you want drivers you need to look on the intel website.

I don't get how it can't be a real asus. Why would some other company make it and why would it have an asus style model number?

the laptop is verified by intel .this means that asus worked togther with intel .so it is a real asus .but they gave it all away to intel .so i dont think asus has anyting to do with it now .

Correct. All support, warranty etc is handled by intel and administered either through the reseller you bought it from or through intel directly. That includes all drivers, etc which you should get through the intel website.

The reason the model stickers are the same is that the basic chassis shell and most of the main internal components are identical between the S96 and Z96 models. The VBI program is part of intel's push to get a consistent set of (swappable) components for laptop production Asus, Compal and (I think) Qanta all signed on since they do ODM production work for everyone anyway - you can find all kinds of details around here if you do a search for vbi or verified by intel.
