I got my girlfriend an asus f3sv about a year ago. Just today it had something go wrong when she was playing second life or something...

basically the computer is now in a really low resolution and in the device manager there is a flag on the video card for the laptop.

I had her reinstall some new drivers for the Nvidia geforce 8600M which is in her laptop but it did not fix it.

I went to the asus website and searched for drivers for her model of laptop for vista 32 bit.. and had her reinstall the chipset drivers.

It didn't fix it... my next thing I am going to have her try is getting an ubuntu cd to see if the live CD works... to try to detect if this is a hardware issue or software.

do you guys have any ideas?

Definitely sounds like video drivers, try uninstalling the nvidia graphics drivers entirely and rebooting. You can use a driver cleaning utility to remove all the nvidia graphics driver files that get left over even after uninstall. Then install the latest graphics drivers you can find for your OS. You can try drivers from http://laptopvideo2go.com which is where I tend to get mine from. Updating chipset drivers is a good idea too, but once you install them they shouldn't be an issue. Good luck!
