    Hello everybody,
For weeks now, I've been searching across the www via google to find a way out of this annoying situation I am facing. As others have described in this thread and various other threads throughout the web, I am not getting any Audio Output via my Notebook speakers. I have tried to contact the customer support of Asus and Realtek, but they seem to be most hesitant in replying to my inquiries.
So here we go, this is my detailed description of the problem: (Some of the terms i put in " " may not have the right names, as I'm using a German version of Vista. I still hope it is understandable.)

    1. POST sound works. Speaker seem to get disabled from the moment when the first Vista Logo appears at startup.
    2. Via Headphones Audiooutput always works. Same with Audio Output via the optical SPDIF jack.
    3. Using Linux (Ubuntu 7 Live CD) as well the Headphones as the speakers work. I have not tried other Linux Versions and distributions.
    4. Using Vista when I go to "Playback devices" i see the following devices:
    i) Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)
ii) Realtek HDMI Output (Realtek High Definition Audio)
    5. in 4.i) under "jackinformation" "Atapi internal ATAPI socket" and "rear control panel 3,5-mm-jack" are each marked with a black circle. I assume this symbolizes, that some sort of plug (e.g. headphones) are plugged in.
    6. I have tried every driver, starting from version 1.79 in combination with every BIOS, starting from version 208 with no success. Even multiple reinstallations of Vista using the supplied Recovery DVD and even using a standard Vista Setup Disk for a complete manual Installation showed no effect. Every time I did this I had completely formatted my hdd.

    conclusions i drew:
    1. and 3. obviously proof, that it is not a defect piece or hardware, or am I wrong?
    3. Even proves, that it is not the BIOS' fault, doens't it?
Knowing this, the only possibility left is a driverproblem. But none of the drivers work. So now my question is: Is it maybe a problem Vista is causing?

This all started, as I unplugged my headphones one day, but a little window still displayed "a plug has been inserted".
Nowadays, I only see this message when inserting a plug into the mic jack. When plugging headphones into the headphone/SPDIF jack, I get no message at all.

Hear are some solutions I have stumbled across the www:

    I. Installing Asio4Allmight have contributed to the disappearance of a user's problem. For me it did not work.
II. Another user reported having solved his problem by rolling his BIOS back to version 208. Sadly, I had no success with this method.
III. Asus G2 users report having solved their problem by doing the following:
Go to "playback devices" -> "Speakers" -> "Level" and drag the Balance down to zero. Then you raise it up again. It worked for a lot of them. Not for me though.
IV. Some believe you should plug your headphones in and out continuously and if that doesn't help, then plug them in and move the plug around in the jack. Please don't try this or be very careful when doing so. This might damage the jack and then it would be very difficult to differentiate the hardware- from the softwareproblem or to isolate one from the other.
    V. My own proposal would have been to uninstall the driver for the audio device from the device manager, reboot and then manually install the latest driver from the device manager ( http://rapidshare.com/files/176869963/Vista_R212.zip). However, this is not possible, as Vista automatically reinstalls the Realtek HD Audio driver right after the reboot, leaving me with no time to give my method a try. I hope posting this link is not something wrong or rude, but I thought it might help to use this mirror, as the manufacturer's FTP-download ist very slow indeed.

Well, that's about all I have to offer. I truly hope as many users with the same problem as possible find this thread and that we can soon find a solution to this most annoying problem.

    Regards

    Kliph Hanga

I have the same problem bro. With my ASUS M50SV. I believe it is a hardware problem since it on ly affects the spdif port(this is where i usually insert my speaker jack). I really think it is a hardware problem.

Yep i also checked that out. It seems that the system assumes that there is still something inserted on the spdif port

In addition to this. In my case, the speakers would work whenever i uninstall the realtek driver.

    Hi,
    thanks for all the feedback!!
It is definitely not hardware! Note: Under Linux everything works!
