I just noticed today that theres a semi high pitched whine coming from my W2. I can't tell for sure if its coming from above the CPU or the HDD but the sound is amplified when I turn the speakers up yet it's quiet when whine stops.
It seems to pause momentarily when performing tasks then return, so again Im not sure which part is causing this.
The other problem is with the keyboard, it's a little loose so when I press the keys along the top and right edge it makes a tapping sound. I got technical support to suggest I reseat the kb but it doesn't seem to have remedied the problem.
Does anyone else notice or have these problems? Or even better, solutions to these problems?
Theyre getting annoying and detracting from the W2's pro's.
Thanks

Hm. Sounds like you have a sound driver issue. I'd go to Asus' website and get the latest ones - install them, should fix the issue.
As for the keyboard, you said it's loose, so if you are comftorable taking it apart, maybe you could tighten the screws....I'm not sure how it is done really. But it would save you the time from having to send it in.
When Justin posts see what he says! He knows a lot more than me about the W2V.... -
Wow, thanks for the quick reply.
But the sound issue I don't think has to do with the sound because I still hear it if I mute the speakers.
As for the kb, theres no screws holding the actual board down I don't think. Instead theres tabs working to hold it down, but the top part is supposed to be clamped down by the cover, just that on mine its not tight enough to keep the rattle away.
I hope Justin has good advice to share, he's one of the most useful members I've seen here regarding the W2. -

Hm, that's interesting. I would try reinstalling the sound drivers anyway, couldn't hurt.
Well, if you can't do anything about the keyboard yourself, I would definitely send it in - you should not have a keyboard like that! -

Chaz.... you're really upbeat and positive and I wish you owned an Asus so you could help share more Asus dedicated knowledge.... with your 1,500 posts in only two months, I can tell you've got even more time on your hands than I do and maybe need a better job!
Asudef - I think that sound you're hearing is actually the chipset itself.... you're taking it's not the hard drive or the fans or anything, right? There's a low humm sometimes from all computers, but usually its drowned out 10 fold by typing, music or even something as low as the fan or just background noise.... A little more info on what you're hearing would be good.
The keyboard..... well the keyboard doesn't actually have any screws that pull it down... just flanges that slide under the bottom part of the palmrest and a cover that screws down over the top..... your keyboard isn't loose, or atleast that can't be adjusted.... I'd say if ANYTHING, some nice thin double side tape would not only work, but make your experience even more IBM like.... I can't say that it's normal, but I wouldn't even worry about it and using the tape on the underside would just make is 100% rock solid.. -
Chaz: Thanks, I plan to install the sound drivers since Im sharing the same problems as the other members. It hasnt bugged me quite enough to make me search out the drivers yet
Justin: Thanks! Ill try the tape, it should fix the problem. Whats the easiest way to take out the kb to apply the tape? I noticed theres a cable connected to it and I want to damage that. Also is it normal when I take the front cover off the kb curves up like a worn book cover.
About the sound issue, I made a little recording of it while loading a program which made that stutter. I got it by maxing out the record volume for the Video channel, it would only show up on the Video channel though. I think it could be the GPU fan, I have the same problem on my desktop card which is an ATI Radeon also
Edit: Uploaded the file here -

Those 5 screws under the battery come out and then you take that big black strip off that's about the keyboard...
If you're already in.... take a flat screw drive and push the ears of the connection up and slide out the cable.... that's all there is to it...
That sound isn't the fan.... it's the card itself.... but the nvidia's do it too.... I'm not 100% sure of what's causing it -- or I'd figure out a way to stop it... but, it's like interference more than anything... I'm not saying it can't be annoying, but there are ways to deal with it...Last edited by a moderator: May 5, 2015 -

Thanks Justin, I cant wait to get rid of this keyboard click.
I remember physically stopping the GPU fan on my desktop and it got rid of the sound so Im no so convinced its interference. -
I had this same problem I made a thread about it, and I managed to fix the problem fairly easily. I hope this works for you
double right on the volume so you can get to the master volume control and then go to "options" and then "properties" and make sure to check every box so you can control every aspect of the sound, then make sure the one marked "video" is turned down completely and that should solve your problem. -
Thats the problem, I muted my speakers altogether and I still got the sound. It was just amplified by having the "Video" channel turned up, now that I check what you told me to do it does make a sound but it was different before.
Its gone now but I hope it doesnt happen again or it happens enough for me to send it in. -
I hear that sound too occasionally. I can't really tell when as I never paid attention to the circumstances on when it happened. I do believe that it only did it when working on battery mode however. It never lasts long enough for me to get annoyed by it though.

Hmm thanks, Ill try and see if the sound shows up when I run it off the battery.
Noises from my W2
