Possible Resolution to the Nvlddmkm.sys Error in Vista

This potential fix pertains to machines that have Nvidia video cards and any version of the Vista operating system.

(Obligatory disclaimer: If you choose to attempt the manual fix, you do so at your own risk.)

I know that the nvlddmkm.sys error has been extremely troublesome for a lot of our customers--for some, it resets the display, while for others, it can cause blue screens. There is no "official" fix for the problem from either Microsoft or Nvidia, but we may have a solution that will work for the 8 Series video cards (8600, 8800, etc).

Be advised, though, that we can't guarantee that it will work for you, and it is not the permanent resolution to the problem--merely a workaround to preserve your sanity until the official fix comes out.

    Instructions (Series 8 cards only):

Go to Windows\System32\Drivers and rename nvlddmkm.sys to nvlddmkm.sys.old
Go to the nVidia directory and find the nvlddmkm.sy_ and copy it to Windows\System32\Drivers
Using the CMD window, change the directory to C:\windows\system32\drivers
Type: expand.exe nvlddmkm.sy_ nvlddmkm.sys (There is a space between exe. And the n and the underscore and the n.)
Hit enter. The new expanded file will now be in the Drivers folder and the system can be rebooted.
For series 7 cards, it has been proposed that using driver version 97.37 might resolve the issue, but we have not tested that in-house.

Special thanks to Ellen Reardon for researching the issue.

Hello Forerunner - I stumbled across this while trying to find any bios/drivers on the Circuit city or Velocity micro site. There are none. All I could see was a disc included in box. If we can get anyone (who bought one of these) to look at what bios they have, then if it is newer than ours(it seems it must be if they arent having the problems) they could copy it off their disc and place it on the forum or a link, etc. Where was that thread where the guys that just purchased them posted?
