Okay, so I have to go on a business trip 1 week from now and when I try my LAN port on my w7j, windows consistiently says no media detected. Restarted, enable/disable card. That's all I have done for now. The fact that I didn't install anything new, no changes to the OS bothers me. Did anyone else experience the same problem with the Realtek Gig Ethernet card?

Maybe try reseating the card, if it's not too hard to get to. If that doesn't work and Asus can't fix it by the time you need it, you might want to look at an Ethernet ExpressCard like this.

Just for ****s and giggles I'd download a live cd of some sort and see if the ethernet port pulls an ip there. If so, you know its a software issue.

Thanks. My next step was to get a live cd or some sort. Anyone know what's good?

More importantly, Realtek RTL6168/8111 PCI-E adapter

Doesn't look like a linux CD will be good because the realtek nic is hardly supported in linux...doh. Does asus have any diagnostic discs?

One of my friends has a similar problem on a Toshiba laptop. The solution that I found wasn't perfect, but it worked. The first question is does the computer recognize anything, even if it is just for a split second that it trys to get an IP address. To check, open the network connections and watch the icon when you plug in a cord that you can verify should give an IP address.

Windows, for a split second never recognizes there is anything plugged in. Yes, I have tested with different wires and different ports and confirmed they work. It's the computer for sure.

Well, I'm gonna try to make a bootable usb with acronis disk manager, install another hd inside and recover an image I made two or three weeks ago. That was working for sure so if it still doesn't work, it's the hardware. SIGH. Slighty dissapointed at ASUS for choosing REALTEK!!!
