I'm in the market for a nice 19"+ WSXGA+(1680x1050) LCD, and looking around, and ****, I'm not rich! $600+(Note, Canadian here) for one is expensive still, sure it has dropped, but as a student, I can only afford $350~ max for one hah.
Anyone have any recommendations? Been mainly looking at BenQ, Samsung and Viewsonic LCDs - quite decent reviews I've seen.

Asus lcds are expensive because there quality is top notch. I believe samsung gets excellent reviews. Also the dell lcd's also have excellent reviews for quality and the big thing is they are some of the cheapest lcds in the market. Heres the link:

At 239us its an incredible deal. In canadian it is well under your budget. I apologize if they do not offer these in dell canada but you should at least look into it. -

I don't think so... The best of the bunch is the PW201 - the 20" widescreen and with a retail of about $545.00 USD - the screen itself is worth it, but the extra features are ridiculous... of course you've got the 1.3mp digital webcam and the usb's... but look at this picture below... the inputs are insane.. I have one of these mounted in the trunk of my car and I have input from my car's dvd player and navigation..... my notebook which is connected from the front seat... and an xbox 360 which is in the rear...... the panel is very high end and the entire package is not only designed great, but it's very well made and very solid:

Yeap, but they only offer 2 models IIRC, the 20+ one and the 17", both are decently priced, though there aren't any more selection.

For Coriolis: that apple looks waaaay too big for the girl in the picture
There are some deals going on with the ViewSonic LCD's.

I have a Hyundai L90D+ 19" 5:4. It's a nice panel, lot of excellent reviews.
I want widescreen next, though. I had a 21" widescreen 1680x1050 (or something like that) at work this summer, since I took over another guys PC who was on Leave of Absence, and he had requisitoned himself a hugeee monitor.... It was wonderful.
Hopefully I can get HDMI/HDCP support in my next monitor purchase, since they are doing the whole 'protected HD path' thing. -
The Dell 2007fpw looks pretty good, and Dell has sales pretty often as well...

Have you considered NEC? They're pretty nice too, although a bit harder to find in many areas. the NEC ones are glossy.
-
Note I am a student currently living on bagels. I do not want to downgrade to Wonder Bread.

I looked at the dell 2007fpw for a while (has s-video, composite, $400 US, $320 on sale) but then I found out that the 2407fpw has component inputs...but costs 2x more. It would be so amazing to hook my PS2 up through its component video cables to a 24" LCD though, and I'll finally be able to put my 7600 to good use even while playing WC3 lol.
One small hitch is convincing my parents to let me spend $800 (my own money, mind you) -
Nice heh, and yea, the chinese food here is amazing, and cheap to boot.
I'm pretty sure I'm getting the vx2025, unless the 2000fpw comes down to under 350 before taxes. **** the taxes! -
The 2407 is on sale here and it's <$700. Bah.
Throwing a question out to the masses: does Dell usually have ridiculous sales around christmas/boxing day time? Which is better? -
I find it quite random, they(well, up here) have random "xx Days of xxx Sale", where they have a certain amount of items for sale with massive discounts, for example, in May(I think), they had the 2407 on sale for $699 Canadian, down from $999, which was an awesome price back then!
Another thing, I saw the VX2235 for $379 and if I find discounted gift cards, after tax and all, about $380 in total, which is an amazing price. Now, the hard part is finding the gift cards -

dell! they are beautiful

May I also suggest the Samsung 205BW... a 20" WSXGA+ monitor with HDCP and a height adjustable stand - two features that are almost unheard of at this end of the market.

Until Asus fans actually try out Asus monitors, they should really not jump the gun and say anything is better..... I get the oppurtunity to use a lot of different monitors and to date my favorite monitor has been my 23" sony which cost an arm and a leg (close to $2k a year and half ago).... and in the last 5 months or so, the Asus has been my "fav", although if it were 23" or bigger, I'd say all praise this monitor...... IT beats the sony in EVERY category, it beats every viewsonic that we have and we have the better vp and vx models..... I'd be using it as my every day work monitor if I didn't already need the extra space..... but both the sony and the asus are using samsung panels.....
-
Well the hyundai imagequest Q321 TVs also sell under the name Marantz LC3201e and Marantz is considered very high end.
I know I love my imagequest, and I loved the price (with both HD and QAM tuner). So if/when I buy an LCD for my desktop it'll probably be an imagequest.
And, confirmed, the hyundai imagequest Q321 uses samsung LCDs. I hope they also use samsung panels for the smaller models.

I hooked up my S96J to my 32" hyundai imagequest Q321 LCD to watch movies I only had in data form, and play WoW (VGA).
Beeeeeautiful!

i have both the samsung 205bw and asus pw201. lets just say the samsung is on the floor gathering dust right now.
i made the switch and never looked back. i can hook up a tv tuner, xbox AND a vcr to it as well as 3 extra usb slots. i havent figured out how to get the camera to work yet but who cares. -
True, but comparing the price, arghh!
But in the price bracket, I wouldn't be surprised if it was the leader of its pack -

I actually just got a surpise. A model we saw a while ago as a demo will be in before the end of the month. The MW221 is a 22" monitor with HDCP and a 2mb response time......... it's WSXGA+ and it'll only be $449. Now, for $549, I still like the PW201 20" at WSXGA+.... plus it has a lot more features..... but for those looking for something a bit bigger with HDCP - I don't think the price is bad at all. Plus the bezel is brushed aluminum and matches a lot of the W and V series notebooks.
Asus said a 24" will be out in December.
In Taiwan they physically make 32 and 42" screens that rock.... the US doesn't think they'd sell here though because they're right up there with the cost of what Sony has to offer at that size...... I've seen them and I also love Sony, but knowing what I know now about at least the desktop monitors that asus makes for sony - I think these would be awesome... just not sell very well. Feature wise, they put Sony to shame, but when you're talking about a Sony-like price tag, that alone would turn people away before they even look to see what they offer. -
Will that new monitor be using new 22" Samsung panel? Looks like it is going to be a TN...The question is thether this will cause the pw201 to go down in price a little. It still looks more attractive, other than the size eveything else is better.
-

"TN" ?
I couldn't tell you, those things aren't usually shared and I only know what's inside because I often tear mine down and happen to read the panel info when they're apart.
It's not going to lower the cost of the PW201 at all... in fact, they're looking for a different market with this model. The PW201 has multiple things the MW221 doesn't, like the 1.3mp webcam, all of the inputs (like I showed in a picture on a previous pages), Picture-in-Picture, Pivot (for portrait mode), and a fully adjustable base........ but for what it is the PW201 is a really good price as is..... I'm just surprised by the price of the MW221 as it's very cheap.. -
I am 99% sure it will be a TN-panel, as only they can have 2ms response time and be so cheap, the original Samsung monitor with the same panel is selling for ~$350.
-
The higher the response time, the lower the viewing angles, etc. So its cheaper in a way....MPVA please
I'm still looking, blah. Is a 22" that much larger thena 20.1"? -
PROPortable Company Representative
Yeah, well I use a 23" at work and like I said, although I love the 20" PW201, I need the extra 3" and higher resolution. Now, is another 2" at the same resolution going to be a big deal for people? I don't know... it'll give you the oppurtunity to sit further back from the monitor - which has it's advantages in itself.
-
True....
Ugh, I'm very cautious with cash right now, I need more
Still looking at them though, tons of window shopping -

Cut price further with a 20% off Dell coupon if you can't find one off the coupons section. Supposedly this LCD is all the craze right now, what with 5ms response time and all that other built in Dell goodness... -
tiger direct has an acer 20 inch standard monitor for 199 after rebates. might have expired. 8 ms response time

viewsonic vx2025 from what I have read is the best bang for your buck 20" lcd

the nec 20wmgx2 is the best 20" but is pricey

The viewsonic vx2025 is a very good monitor and one that I'd suggest...... The only problem is that viewsonic has much more of a reach than Asus does in the lcd market......... look at what the PW201 comes with feature wise and it's impossible to day it's not right up there with it, if not a bit above in terms of "best bang for your buck".
-
I'll agree with you on Asus not being widely known for LCD panels, especially here in Australia.
The problem is, this tends to make them more expensive than the competition. Locally, I've seen the Samsung 205BW from $450 AUD, the Viewsonic VX2025WM from $515 AUD and the Asus PW201 from $815 AUD. That's a lot more money for a nice stand, web cam, component input and a USB hub.
I won't argue that the PW201 is a very nice monitor... but is it worth an extra $300+ AUD for most consumers?
Oh Cori, I'll second Justin's recommendation on the VX2025WM too. It's an excellent panel for the money... the stand could be better and he speakers are a joke, but it delivers where it counts. -
PROPortable Company Representative
well, I don't know exactly the exchange rate, but the difference here in the states isn't that much and for the options.. yeah... it's worth it. It's amazing at what people want in a monitor nowadays and how much more it makes them worth. It's almost like just an lcd panel isn't enough anymore.
-
WOW thats an excellent price on the Dell 207...
What exactly is the difference between the 2007WFP and the 207WFP? They look so similar but theres a $50+ difference in price between the two.... -
-www.bit-tech.net -
I also believe it's built using a cheaper Chimei 6 bit TN panel.
-
Cheaper panel, no USB, composite and S-Video ports and no movable stand.
I ordered one though, 20" for under $300 is awesome(Canadian too) -
Hey Cori long time~! Long time no chat with everyone on here.
I've been busy so haven't been around in a while.
My suggestion to you is to pick up a FP202W from BenQ. I got one a few months ago for about 400, but now they're going for a little less. That's after tax too, canadian dollars.
GREAT monitor for the price/performance. It isn't very adjustable, but it's great.
Only downside is that it isn't very adjustable, it just tilts, and watching videos you can see some noise, but it's not too bad. 1680x1050 is its resolution, but lower resolutions still look fantastic on it, not like some of the viewsonics I've read about.
Viewing angles could be better, but it's not a big deal. Ghosting is near nothing when playing FPS games.
Overall just a great monitor for the price. Oh yeah, it's a 20" widescreen.
Cheers,
Mike -
Hey whats up?!
And yea, I looked into that as well. Though, the Dell can easily be sent back if I don't like it, or some similar comment about it. Though, not knowing how it is, I don't know if I will return it yet. -
Hey Cori, I know you've already ordered the Dell but I thought this article may be of interest to you...
It's a side by side comparison between the Dell 2007WFP (ie: the nice one) and the Samsung 205BW I suggested earlier in this thread.
http://www.pureoverclock.com/article637.html -
Cool article. I got the e207wfp this morning, and I have no complaint what so ever, its nice and big and bright, viewing angles aren't bad, no dead pixels from what I see, and barely any light leakage.
I'd say downgrading to wonderbread was well worth it -
i ordered an e207wfp as well. got it for $250 US shipped. seemed like a really good deal. should arrive next week....cant wait!
-
I'm going to get the 21" gateway refurbished from Costco.com for $329+$22 ship/handling.
21" widescreen with USB hub, component, s-video and composite inputs, 8ms response time and many many positive reviews! I really needed the component video input for my PS2.
My only concern is buying a panel refurbished by Costco's tech subsidiary, EHS. Does anyone have any advice on that? I have some friends who say that refurbished=dead pixels, and it seems to be a logical assertion. Also, the ehs warranty Link does not cover Acts of God, which seems sketchy.
OT: Those ASUS LCD's are pricey! What other good WSXGA+ panels?
