That's exciting. Nice looking netbook. Wonder what the pricing will be? Hopefully starting at no more than $400 like the HP Mini 311.

What we are sure of: It includes a webcam, chiclet keyboard, and a soft-touch plastic underside to keep it from slipping. There are 3 USB sockets, as well as an ethernet port for input and output. There are both VGA and HDMI ports for external displays.

What is rumored because of asus announcement of a coming atomN500 netbook for around 575$ (that price is mainly due to the overpricing of ddr3 overddr2 at the time of the announce, I believe that now DDr3 has become as cheap and even cheaper than DDR2 it will go down to 500$):
    - Dual atom processor with ION2 nvidia graphics with DDR3
    - Possible optimus to switch between the ion (210m?) and the integrated atom graphic chipset.

Well nothing poped out 13th may finally. But taiwan today reported that the 1218 was already available in taiwan ? Can someone confirm this info ?

ASUS Eee PC 1218 to pack NVIDIA Ion, others due May 13 | Electronista

"Now reportedly available on the southeast Asian island, the aluminum-clad netbook is now known to be a high-end model capable of playing 1080p video and some 3D games. Its exact price wasn't mentioned by DigiTimes but should steer closer to the equivalent of $605 in the region."

3 USB ports, thats exactly what I need ^^ I'm sure the hardware in this asus will be good enough for my needs. I only worry about the battery life since it has a dual core cpu. Asus's other dual core netbook with ion graphics (1201N) only has 4-5 hours of battery life, while I need the double of that.

Anyone got any more info on the source from Taiwan? Glad to see people want this as much as I do. Oh yeah, and 4 hours of battery might be the only deal breaker.

Seeing as the N330 in the 1201N is a desktop dual core without speedstep, the new N500 powered EEE will get much longer battery life.

UPDADTE!!! the 1215 was just announced, 2 usb 3.0 and optimus with a 218M. The 1218 will have at least this. Im happy.

Link to update? 218M? That's weird. Is the 218M just a crippled 220M or a beefed up 210M? I hate when they do that. Maybe the 1218 will have a 220m if it exsits.

I would think so. As far as modern games go starcraft 2 doesnt have high system requirements. The only thing i would worry about is cpu bottlenecking. Idk how the new D series atoms hold up under cpu intensive games.

P.s. Im planning on using this for SC2, so it better play it. Lol

im sure it should handle it pretty well sense my asus 1201n can play it pretty good on low too mem settings.

and the hardware mainly the gpu is better than the 1201 9400.

tho star craft seems like it uses the cpu more than gpu... so if that's the case performance is still gonna suffer sense atom... but ya it should still play it reasonable well.

If you look at his 3Dmark 2005 pic is say's "Media Accelerator", so I wonder if the score he has was with the integrated rather than the nVidia GPU.........

A video on YouTube (sorry no link atm), showed Starcraft 2 beta with the HP Mini 311 with nVidia ION and Intel Atom N270. It didn't do too well at stock speeds, but they boosted the CPU to 2.0GHz from 1.6 and it ran very well. It was all low graphics detail. So if an Atom @ 2GHz and ION graphics can play well, I'm sure anything with a faster CPU will do fine as long as you're happy with low gpu detail.

They are probably referring to GT218 core which both the Nvidia ION 2 and GeForce 305/310M are based upon.

As a student who spends most of his day on campus 4 hours just doesn't cut it; mostly because it's going to be around 2 hours if I wanna play a game or two between classes (or in them...). I think I need at least 7 hours with a minimum of 4 or so to be right for me.

Seriously, when do people need to go longer than that? If you're at school, you already carry around a book bag, so take your plug with you and charge it. Most international flights have plugs for you to use now. I have no idea what situations people are in that they need 4 hours of laptop usage without an electrical socket nearby.

Having cords around is clumsy. Having freedom of movement for as long as possible makes usage that much more enjoyable. On a long haul flight in economy class, having less clutter, for me, is best.

^^^-This. No one wants a bunch of wires and a power brick in their backpack. Its all about freedom. If I was planning on plugging in everywhere i would buy a power-hungry laptop.

Imagine a phone with a 4 hour battery life. Sure you could take your charger everywhere and plug it in whenever you sit down, but do you really want to?

I feel you guys on having less clutter... that's always nice. When I take my phone, I just put it in my pocket. Carrying the charger with me would either jam up my pockets or require me to buy a man-purse.

But if you're flying on a plane or going to school, you already have a bag to put these things in. I guess the difference is, I don't mind the space the brick and cords take up in my bag since I don't really notice the difference. I guess what I'm saying is, if there's a laptop that I love that only has 4 hours of battery life versus a laptop that I kinda like that has 8... I'm going with the former.

About the battery life thing, packing a laptop charger in a backpack and dragging it in and out a few times a day, 5 days a week, will eventually cause the charger cord to short.

My original Acer laptop charger started shorting out after about a year of lugging it around in backpacks. I bought a cheapo replacement off ebay and it lasted about a month.

Moral of the story, 8+ hours battery life so I don't ever have to take my charger with me is a good thing.

It's also hard sometimes to get a seat at some cafes near an outlet.

    Back on topic.....

When the hell is this thing coming out? Come on and announce it already!

Never been in situations where there are no way to charge your battery?? Like in a train? Yes, you can have train rides that last well over 4h (I take a 7h ride monthly). And when you say *most* planes, it doesn't mean *every* plane. So yeah, people that need an ultraportable tend to travel a lot (well more than you actually) and can't always recharge the battery. A longer lasting battery isn't something trivial ; it's a feature that some will find extremely useful. Just because you have no idea about it doesn't mean it's useless.

I do like my M11x. The thing is that it is big and heavy. It would be nice to have a netbook that is smaller, lighter, and thinner, and less expensive so I'm not as cautious around it. My old Eee 1000h I threw around without concern, my M11x I treat it gingerly. Obviously gaming performance isn't anything comparable between the M11x and 1218, but it can still manage gaming to some extent, and I find I use my M11x more for basic web and productivity tasks.

That was my thoughts, the only games I play are garrys mod and wow, hopefully some starcraft II also. I really need something for the summer though. And I can't see the 1218 hitting shelves before the end of July. Also price is a concern, I can get the m11x for 900 how I want it. If they release the 1218 at a crazy price like 750 or 800, it's hard to justify that when I can get an amazing little laptop like the m11x for a hundred bucks more.

I hope Asus gives the 1218N a unibody enclosure like the MBP. I'm leaning toward getting a C2D MBP just because I really hate the wedge designs on most laptops...very ugly.

Even though right now I believe the best value in the thin and light category are the Asus Ul30VT and the HP DM4, neither of them are delivering design-wise. The Ul30vt is too plasticky and cheap looking (but has excellent weight and performance for the price) and the DM4, while very pretty, has too much of a rounded design and suffers from a lack of unibody look despite the brushed aluminium body. Wedge shape also.

If you are at a university where there are only 4 plugs (which are for vacume cleaning) for 400 people you know why you want more than 8+ hours. Fighting for an electrig plug everyday is no fun bussines, not to mention tripping over all the wires...

Is it possible that the 1218 was just a concept? That it was never meant to be released? I don't ever remember Asus saying anything about it. The only news was that stupid Red Dot design award and every single shred of information on the Internet is just a rehash of that original news.

I sure hope not. Asus seems pretty serious about a similarly-clad 1018P which has already gotten through FCC approval. I would think if they're serious about selling the 1018P then they are probably serious about the 1218P. I had hoped Asus would announce it at Computex, but so far not even a whisper about the 1218P has made it out. I really hope I don't have to settle for some wedge-shaped brick or an underpowered 10" netbook...

Well here is some hopeful news. As we all know, the only reason anybody knows about the 1218P is because it was awarded a RedDot design award. If you go to RedDot's website and read the requirements for submission for the award, it states in very clear terms that any product to be considered for the award MUST be on the market NO LATER than July 1st of the year of the competition. I should think then that means that Asus had to commit to putting this thing on the market by July 1st otherwise it wouldn't have been elligible for the award.

The only snag in this is that it doesn't say which market it must be available in, and there is a digitimes article that at least suggests that it is already on the market in Taiwan. That is not confirmed however, and I'd think there would be mention of it somewhere if that were the case.

    Thanks for finding this!

I feel like they have to announce it at computex. What's a better time to unveil something that's likely going to get them a lot of praise and attention? I just can't see it being a good move that on June 30th it just pops up in stores online.
