I figure I can get software and other accessories cheap elsewhere, so I didn't add too much on except the basics. If anyone has good ideas for cheap Office software (or free!) and the best virus software, I would love to hear your ideas. I'm very excited and I hope I like this one as much as I do in my head!
-
Was it includes any tax or the MSRP from XoticPC ?
And do not you think 2 HDD's will drain your battery quickly as compared toa single HDD ? -
actually.. microsoft is freely beta testing their office 2010, if you visit their website http://www.microsoft.com/office/2010/en/default.aspx
and to second pradhan's question, if there was tax, where did you order from, if you don't mind me asking? california tax 9.25% sux ._. -
I didn't pay any tax, and I'm in North Carolina, if that matters.
It's possible the 2 HDD's will drain the battery quicker, however I am rarely without a power outlet, and if I am it's not for very long. I'm no longer a student, so less hassle on that end. -
Congrats! Let us know how it is when you get it. I may be joining the club soon too.
-
good luck. when will it ship??
-
Star Forge Quaggan's Creed Redux!
Congratulations! Let me know how it handles as I am still thinking of a N61JQ-A1 or something equivalent later in the year. I presume beside the size difference and additional options, they both on average will handle the same?
-
congrats. i think i am going to take the plunge soon too and buy one. id also be curious if you were told anything about when it would be shipped. i see the websites are saying end january/beginning february, but im curious if you heard anything more specific.
looking forward to hearing what you think when you get hands on with the machine. -
Yay! I am not positive when it will ship, but I can ask Justin a bit later today (when I'm not at work)
I will do a full review as soon as I get it with tons of pictures. I really hope it lives up to my expectations!! You guys may have to help me figure out the 3DMark or whatever stuff because I've never done it before, but I will do whatever benchmarks I can.
Strike, I assume they will both handle fairly similarly, since the core of the comps is the same, including vid card, etc. -
if you have the time and inclination later that would be great reicheru. i imagine youd be curious of a firmer date yourself anyway.
-
So no news from Asus regarding when this one is going to ship to me. I am anxiously awaiting ahhhhh!!!!
-
-
I just read your thread and I'm happy! I just wonder if everything is going to be the same, ie. the screen and the wireless.
-
Hey,
congrats for your acquisition!
Considering this laptop, you could maybe share your first impressions, check the heat distribution and most of all, confort us about no throttling issue ( as mentioned with soooooo many laptops )
Thanks! -
Congrats with your choice, i'm considering one myself aswell. But i'm not sure how the gpu will perform, although it seems decent enough for my needs.
Its just that I cant stand that purple finish on the back of the screen, why would they do that? The entire laptop looks awesme and that 1 thing totaly ruins it. -
Student, IT'S NOT PURPLE IT'S BROWN!!!!!!! -
Nothing yet?
-
Still nothing, haven't heard anything from XoticPC about dates, which is a bummer. I was hoping to hear something already, but maybe this week I will.
I can't wait much longer! -
I am now also keeping an eye on N71JQ and keenly waiting for your review and hope that it is better than N61JQ.
So far I have only seen N61Jq in one shop chain in Germany (Media Markt). I wonder how did they get it before anybody else?
In most of their branches in the area it’s already sold out. Only one of them still had last few pieces.
At the shop they told me that it is ASUS N61JQ, but they sell it under a local name ASUS PRO64JQ. They are selling it at a special offer only for 999€, but the model being sold has no Bluetooth and it has an Atheros WLAN card. Otherwise, all the specs are same with the N61JQ.
I was really interested to grab one of the last pieces they had at stock, but as I said in the other thread I am not satisfied with the build quality of N61JQ.
I find it not too sturdy and robust like my two year old ASUS M50vm. I went and checked it again for the last time and finally I said NO to this model.
As I said in the other post the keyboard design look very nice and more comfortable to use than my M50Vm, but it has lot of flex especially on the number block side.
But what terrified me a lot was that the screen back cover is really too thin and not sturdy at all. I pressed on it today again gently, and the result was that the LCD started to bend. I could see it changing colors.
With my older ASUS you really have to press hard on the back cover to see some effect on the LCD. This worried me and was the main reason I did not want to buy it. I carry my notebook a lot of times in a back pack and this worried me because if there is some extra pressure on it than the display may get damaged.
Furthermore, the area just behind the keyboard where all the button are is also bending very easily. When I tested it, there was no battery inside. I think at least that would not be a big problem since it will not bend too much down if there is a battery there. -
Hmm, I hope the quality of mine is much better! I look forward to it. I am a little scared of what you said, since I'm used to using a Lenovo ThinkPad T43 which is a business beast! This thing has handled everything, and runs smoothly after almost 5 years. Ugly as a black brick (for real), but seriously nothing can hurt it. Plus, it has shock protection. I move it and it automatically protects the harddrive! The screen is encased in so much nothing flexes... period. So I hope to god the N71 lives up to half of the sturdiness of my T43. At least so I won't ill it or hate it for being chintzy.
-
Okay guys, I just got a call from Xotic!
Asus now has my computer and they should be receiving it in about 4 business days to do my upgrades and test it out.
SO EXCITED!!!! -
As for me, I am now totally confused with respect to my new i7 notebook.
Ken Lee just told me that the model ASUS M60J which I was looking at is going to be discontinued by ASUS and would be replaced with N61JQ.
So I am not going to buy M60J which is shortly going to see no more development. -
The M60J is not as nice as the N61JQ as far as I know, so I'm not surprised. Good luck with your decision though!
-
Most probably I will wait a month or so until more notebooks with i7 come to the market.
Maybe it's time to switch from ASUS. Now I am looking at alternatives like Sony Vaio or Thinkpad W-series.
I need a good machine. I am writing my Phd dissertation and need something reliable and rubust. I don't want any headaches.
ASUS was my first choice since I loved my M50vm, but if they do not produce something similar anymore than maybe it's time to move on..... -
Well you if you go the ThinkPad route, I can tell you they are worth it. I've loved mine, even with it's big black brick looks. It's solid and can seriously take any amount of abuse. I used it for 4.5 years of undergrad, and I can't image a different build of computer putting up with what I did to this thing. In fact, even though I'm getting this new Asus, I'm keeping my ThinkPad alive, and I'm going to use it when I travel or need something a bit more portable. It is the ultimate work computer, honestly. I just wanted something more entertainment focused now that I've graduated for home use. I will sure miss the ruggedness of this guy. The shock protection is AWESOME.
-
debating whether I should preorder now or wait until I hear your impressions on the machine.
something to ponder -
Well, if you want to wait until sometime around the end of next week, that's when I'm anticipating getting it. Or, you can pre-order and get it, and if you decide you don't want it, send it back!
Ooo, maybe Justin will get me a review when they receive them at Xotic at the end of this week/beginning of next? -
that would be great, keep us posted.
btw, i'm actually very excited about _you_ finally getting it... lack of reviews does strange things to people
ever since i found out xps 1645 has throttling issue, i was looking for an alternative which i found in asus n61jq. its gonna arrive to local shop next friday or saturday, so if you get it before that, pls write here two things - how is the screen brightness on your laptop, and does it throttle when you run 3d applications? this info is actually most important peace of information for anyone buying n71jq/n61jq -
i am thinking of getting the Asus N61jq-x1 but i wanna know how the 5730 does at gaming
-
-
I got the same call from Xotic and should soon have my ASUS N71JQ-A1 with the 80gb ssd primary drive and 500 gb 7200 as the second and the IC Diamond Thermal Compound.
Hope its everything I think it will be. Kinda excited. -
Ooo, SSD. I was considering it, but I figured I would upgrade later once prices drop a bit. I'm good until then, since this will be a huge upgrade from my current laptop anyhow.
High five to the first two known N71JQ owners (or so it seems) -
Seems like it will be a sick machine... there have to be others out there with pre-orders
-
Got mine from France today
I'll try to make some pictures this weekend and bench some throttling tests
First impressions :
- the mouse doesn't provide a thumb button
- the screen is very glossy, compared to my D630
- the screen is huge and precisely defined
- the cooling system seems quite good, even after 1 hour of CSS
- as silent as my D630 (pretty quiet)
- spaced keys on the board are disturbing in the first place
- multitasking and reactivity are a real joy
to be continued... -
Give us more scoop! -
More scoop! More scoop! So many things I want to know about it!
-
-
-
Well well...
Here are the results from Win7 :
Concerning the battery, it currently shows 1:29 left, with 86% charge.
Also, this N71JQ seems to suffer from the throttling issue as many other i7 systems.
There are maybe some hidden power parameters/configurations I didn't noticed in Win7 ?!
Here are the results displayed by CPU-Z, when running the torture test of Prime95 :
Idle mode : x7 coeff
Torture test on A/C : x12 coeff
Torture test on battery : x7 coeff
++ -
Well if even Asus throttle, it seems there is no hope for any i7 configuration not to do so.
-
-
-
^nothing concrete yet
-
Basically, this is bad if you intend to game or do any cpu demanding work while on battery. I see it as a good thing as when on battery i only webbrowse, watch movies or some other stuff that actually benefit from lower power consumption that comes with lower multiplier.
Its still an issue, thou. I think asus should have made this kind of thing optional.
gaminos, have you checked bios? maybe thres some option there that control multiplier when on battery/ac adapter -
So running off AC...throttling does not occur? This does not seem like a big deal to me...because when gaming I will not be running off the battery. I would only use battery for email / surfing web / excel / etc.... Ogrec can throttling damage components ? -
its perfectly safe, they wouldnt design laptop to throttle if it was otherwise
-
What size Power Supply does the ASUS N61JQ-A1 have in it?
-
it comes with 90W ac adapter if thats what you mean
-
else, throttling wouldnt be an issue, mate!
-
thats unfortunate. i remember researching the xps line in december, when i was considering it, and it seemed like a real problem for folks. im not real familiar with throttling. googling it seems to give a bunch of links dealing with the dell issue. anyone care to explain what the problem is, what causes it, and besides performance (in this case it seems when unplugged) what problems it could/can cause the machine. how common is this throttling issue in laptops nowadays? thanks in advance.
Officially an N71JQ-A1 Owner!!
