Thanks for tellin me about how you decided. It really helps me because I think we use our computers in about the same way. I'm not even that concerned about what ports are included because all I really need is USBs and an HDMI or two to connect to a HDTV. What I'm most concerned about at the moment is that the N71 only has 4GB of RAM and is pretty expensive to upgrade, while the G73 has 8GB stock. I'm using an ancient computer right now and can't multitask at all so I'm not really sure how much RAM is necessary (plus a little more to be safe).

Do you mind sharing the configuration you chose?

I'm so nervous to turn it on, it's like I have no clue what to do with it! I guess turn it on, burn the recovery disks, and there ya go! Funny thing is, this is only my second lappy, and the first one was bought through my university. They did everything for me!

Why are you nervous? Just burn the recovery disks and start using it. It's not like you have to do something special to get it working.

I am currently creating my recovery partition, since I only had 2 rewritable DVD's and you need 4. I guess if it becomes and issue, I will ask Xotic for help or go back and create a recovery with DVD's this weekend. Does it matter if I make my partition and then do the DVD's later?

I don't know actually, mine came with a recovery DVD. I'm guessing the DVD burning stuff is to restore the machine to the state at the exact moment you made the recovery.

I do have the Windows 7 recovery DVD as well, this is definitely to return it to it's state ATM. I think I'll be good. It's almost done now, and I'm thrilled!

Everything will be loaded tomorrow after work. I'm dead tired at the moment, lol. I really like it so far, though. I'm having trouble thinking the font is all bigger (I'm assuming it has to do with screen res) but I think it'll be okay because I think the screen itself looks really nice. It's a lot larger than my last laptop, so the font size doesn't bother me that much, I'm just adjusting. It's actually somewhat easier on my eyes so far. The sound is nice, the keyboard has good feedback, I'm also getting used to that. And damn it is running very cool with few hot spots, mostly near the exhaust on the side. I'm trying to get it set up the way I like things, which may take awhile, and then I'll decide how much of this bloatware I want to do away with (which may be a good deal). Some is neat, some is kinda worthless I think. But overall I am very satisfied for my first evening with it. We shall see when I wake up!!

i was worried about going from 8 to 4 as well...i think it will be ok for my needs...i hope if and when i do need more memory that further down the road the prices will go down...just like my want of an ssd drive etc etc...

heres another thought...we can wait for a great deal on memory and once we swap out 4 to 8gig sell the 4 gigs and make it a better deal...

Thanks for sharing. Looks pretty much the same as I would do except I'm thinking the Intel 5300 instead of the 5100, is there a reason you chose the latter?

8GB of RAM is really expensive right now (around $450 for this laptop) so you're idea is a good one. 4GB is relatively cheap at about $100. I'm not sure when price will go down though.

This computer only has connections for 2 antennas, not 3, so the 5300 while a nice upgrade, isn't really needed.

I ordered mine from Gentech. :)

I also went for intel 5100 instead of Aethoros.
In few months I will replace it by Centrino Advanced-N 6200.

This is my third notebook from ASUS . I've been a long term custumer. :D

I got mine yesterday from XOtic with the only modification made was the IC Diamond Thermal Paste.

So far I like it, though I need to adjust the gamma/brightness a little as pictures look a little "bleached" would be the best way I could describe it. It also had a USB 3.0 port which surprised me, as it wasn't listed on the N71 but was on it's 16.4" sister the N61J-A1.

Other thing I didn't like was the sticky plastic they put ON the monitor describing the Webcam. Now I've got some gunk on the top of my screen that I've got to get rid of, along with trying to figure out which Bloatware to keep and which to uninstall.

Another odd surprise.. while it's got 2 hard drives, there are two partitions on each drive. o_O

It's my first new computer in about five years so I've got to get used to it.. also need to get a new bag for it, as the bag I got for it isn't wide enough. -.-

Just waiting on more reviews of the N71Jq. Things have gone silent on this thread. Just tossing up whether to go a N71Jq-A1 or a N61Jq-A1. Like the idea of 2 HDD bays.

Using my ASUS A6J so both will be a pleasant upgrade.

Now you guys have had your machines for a while, would you care to provide your experiences.
