how does removing a sticker equate with runing your computer? Using laptops "ruins" them too-it generates heat, and mechanical wear. Limited lifespan, the clock is ticking.

Oh well....Live and Learn. Why even bother with goof off? Some water/alcohol dabbed paper towel could have just as easily removed the the sticker glue.

Actually I did use alcohol at first. Didnt work for the really big stickers so I read on these forums goof off might work. I also knew it could take the finish off the computer too. But I then got it on the plastic and it took the finish right off.

Something like this happened to me today too. :( I was cleaning the underside of my psp faceplate with a cloth, and it caused lots of small scratches on it. I feel so stupid now.

My 3 year-old has some Barbie and Dora the Explorer stickers you could use to cover up the marks...

    Sorry... just couldn't resist!

Seems I also "ruined" my laptop.

I've had it on for a total of 4 hours and the backlight has seemingly shot off.

Are you even old enough to operate a notebook? Maybe mommy and daddy can buy you a new one?

Seriously, the thing is not ruined. So you it looks bad - deal with it!

It's fixable more than likely.. visit a hobby store get identical paint.. touch it
back up.. if they don't have the right color go see a car dealer or a paintshop
for car touch up paint depending on what u need.

If all else fails.. use stickers like he said =p

Why remove the stickers anyway? I think they are kind cool. The problem I have is the sticker on the bottom of the laptop....the heat is burning through it..........

But I understand your pain. I baby my G1s as well. Just picking it up sometimes scares me. Scared I will damage something.....what I don't know.

    Option 1:
Minor paint damage, go to an automotive store and buy some cutting cream (light rubbing compound) this is what you can use to restore a shine or lift old scratches out of worn, dull or scratched paint work, it works quite well.

    Option 2:
Major paint damage totally stripping paint to the plastic, I would buy some sand paper smooth off, buy a can of spray paint and repaint. although to do this properly you might want to dismantle your laptop.

    Option 3:
Buy a new chassis and replace.

    Option 4:
Send it to Asus for chassis replacement (although you would probably have to pay for it).

    Option 5:
Buy some plastic adhesive that looks like carbon fibre and apply it over the entier pannel affected, this is probably the cheapest and would look better than putting stickers all over it.

    Good Luck

Dont panic - it looks like you messed up the paint, it wont effect the laptops operation. After you calm down, you will find a way to deal with it, either sand, paint or sticker. Be glad you didnt harm the lcd.

I don't see that piece on eStore. But to give you an idea how much chassis pieces cost:

    http://estore.asus.com/shop/category.asp?catid=551

I would call them up and ask for pricing on those pieces. Thus far I've seen the bottom pieces listed at around 30$, the bezel for the LCD for about 20-30$, etc. The labour will be expensive unless you do it yourself.

If you do happen to get the replacement chasis worked out, make sure you store the old one safely or get those stickers with S/N and other info off as you might need them in the future.

My chasis broke for one of my IBM laptops and had to get it replaced, but they took the chassis with the stickers/info....was annoying to go through another service call to get them back.

The first thing I did to my f3jp was remove all of the stickers because I hate the ratty half worn stickers I see on so many peoples laptops. They all peeled off cleanly except for one. I dabbed on some alcohol with a paper towel and gently wiped off the residue. When I looked at the paper towel it was all silver! The alcohol took off some of the finish which was immediately noticeable. I freaked too.
