Well, in the last few months, periodically, I couldn't get Windows to start. Then it would. Its been fine for a little over a month after I did a restore.

Well, I was away for a week and I turned off the Asus just before I left. (I take my far more reliable HP notebook with me when I travel.)

I just got home... I press the on button and the Centrino icon comes up and then comes a screen that says

"We apologize for the inconvenience... blah blah blah... " and then it say that somehow the last time Windows loaded it was interrupted, or there was a change in hardware or software. It then gives me 4 options: to start in safe mode, safe mode with c: prompt or safe mode with networking or to start in the last correct settings. Or I could have it start normally.

Well, I tried all of the options. And every time this same screen would come on -- It seems like Windows would start to load then a blue screen with some writing would flash for a split second and then this black screen with the white writing saying what I just said up above.

I kept trying different modes and now it won't get even that far.

I have an actual windows XP pro CD -- not a recovery disk but the actual operating system. It came with the Asus.

    Anyway, can anyone help me?

And I have been having these intermittent problems with Windows loading. But they went away for a couple of months -- and the thing has been turned off for a week -- so I have no idea what happened.

I kind of need step by step instructions

How do I do that? Doea it matter that I can't get past the "windows cannot load" screen? if I get it at all?

Mpme pf those steps work. I can't even boot the computer from the cd retail version of the XP SP2 that came with the ASUS (not a recovery disc.

I am most scared right now of having lost my data. All my life I have religously backed up but b/c of too much stuff going on in my personal and professional liife I have not done so in a year.

G*d ... I need a real expert who will be careful to help. I live in the Baltimore-DC area. Can anyone suggest somewhere I cna go.

G*d I do not have time for this now..... I have a critical deadline by next Monday and another one on APril 15th. ANd ofr that latter one I need my ASUS to be working. It has all my info on it.

    Help!!!!!

If the thing you're worried about most is your data... Stop doing _anything_ on the laptop now. Go to a local computer store, or online, and buy a 2.5" drive enclosure to match the type of drive in your laptop. (Make sure you check the type per your model)

Get your HD out of your laptop. boot to another machine and with the HD in the new enclosure, hook it up to the other machine (usb 2.0 most likely).

You'll be able to view your drive, like you would a flash drive, and get all your files off.

Once you've done that, go ahead and put the drive back in your laptop and go through whatever sort of testing / rebuilds you want to try.

I live in the D.C. area. I don't do this for a living, but if you need help getting the HD out and putting it into an enclosure I might be able to meet you somewhere to help. As to troubleshooting the system... I don't suppose it's still under warranty?

Thanks so much Krista -- I have pretty much decided to do that. I have an HD in an external enclosure already -- I was using it for my back-up. My computer tech guy at work will probably help me do that -- (though I could probably figure out how to do it if I had the time.)

Once I get the data off -- I will let him see what he thinks.

Yes it is still under warranty -- purchased from Pro-portable. But Justin isn't around any more it seems. He does not answer my e-mails. I purchased a 3 year extended warranty.

So if I get the data off I will try to get an RMA. The bottom third of the screen is out and has been for a while. I just haven't had time to deal with this. Unfortunately I think i got stuck with a lemon... I have had problems from the start. (The screen was alway less than stellar from the beginning and then after 18 months or so -- it went out in the bottom third altogether.)
