These specs look pretty good. Wonder if the screen is an IPS model like the N550JV? Thinking about grabbing one. I am not getting much info on Google regarding this model. Anyone have any opinions on it? Is this a 2013 model?

Seems to be a nice lappy but u will have to wait for reviews to know if its ips screen or not

Typically it is a feature people like to sell but always good to wait for reviews for a variety of reasons.

I grabbed one today and am very happy with it so far. It is not an IPS screen but it is on par with the viewing angles you get on a Y510p and slightly better on the vertical axis. They put a sticker on the bezel that advertises the "Expanded Viewing Angle" as 150 degrees horizontal and 120 degrees vertical. The hardware ID of the display is LGD02D9. Colors are pretty good as well. Still putting it through the paces.

nice
can you post info about the max temperatures while running 3dmark 11 (cpu + gpu).
you can use hwmonitor for that.. -

It has two fans. One of them runs continuously on the right side of the laptop but there are no vents on the right side, I can just hear it running. The other kicks on and off on the left side. Here are some pics I took in a hurry for ya.
Only thing that I've found annoying so far is a little flex in the lid when I grab it with one hand. And the SD card slot is under the front and recessed a bit. It stays really cool on the bottom while gaming. It pumps out a ton of heat on the left side.
The bottom cover slides off after the removal of one screw. If you look at the pic of the bottom, the area with the vents is what slides off. This allows access to the HDD and RAM as well as wireless card. Touchpad is just ok, it works but I've used better. Asus logo is illuminated on the back cover.

Thank you so much for your reply! Looks like a sweet machine.

I saw this at Microcenter and I am seriously considering it. The specs on the Microcenter site state it has a DisplayPort but from the pictures it looks like it has a D-SUB VGA port (in addition to HDMI). I am assuming the stated specs are not correct? Also, just curious ... is the HDMI/VGA combo preferred on the higher end laptops (over say HDMI/DisplayPort)?
Thanks in advance.

Yeah I think that's a typo.
-
I will say the only thing that's bothering me is that the fan that runs continuously seems to be having some issues. It sounds like it is speeding up and down at random intervals but those intervals are split second adjustments not as if it were due to a temp increase. Almost like the voltage is not regulating properly if that makes sense. -
Here are a few more of the keyboard and logo illumination.

Viewing angle videos for both horizontal and vertical...taken with iPhone but you can get the idea.

What about case temps?
Maybe small stress test with Furmark and Prime95? i7-4700HQ can get very hot... -
So asus now release gtx 760m on their multimedia series using old n56 version chassis under $1000 hmm .. first it was gt 650m, gt 640m, gt 740m, and now gtx 760m. (gt 750m on n550jv)

I've had this for a week.
My screen is an samsung TN FullHD (SEC314C). It's okay, very high max brightness! Black levels feels a bit greyish, I'm guessing around 500:1 contrast, not more.
It has one fan, which is a bit nervous on idle (spins up for small periods), but beside this stays pretty silent, even during high loads.
The wifi is crap, like it's on the N56VZ too.
Some minor quality flaws (few keys sits lower than others, VGA connector is leaning to one side a bit).
But overall great value for the money.
The GPU is just an GTX765M with lower clocks and voltage. I managed to clock it up to 850MHz (with boost active), any more than this and it would crash (indicating that it needs more voltage, which can't be adjusted unfortunately), at this speed it's almost on level with GTX765M, scoreing 4023 in 3dmark11.
The main thing I miss is an IPS dispaly and better wifi, rest is just minor flaws. -
Can you provide some feedback about the performance playing games at full hd?

Yes the 760M is a nice chip, but does not have the brute force of the higher end models, you should be ok if you disable the usual suspects when it comes to performance hits and go to medium/high details.

Every machine in the $1000 range is going to be a tough balance of build quality, specs and screen quality.
-
Clevo/MSI: worse build quality and WAY louder (main drawback of clevo/msi). Clevo also has poor speakers and no backlit keyboard. And not to mention they look like plastic fantatstic gamer machines, the asus has more classy look. But they do come with GTX765M which is slightly faster.
If this doesn't bother you, go for MSI/clevo, more performance for the money.
There are no other alternatives with GTX GPU in same price range. -
As for temps; it's fairly good for the components inside, furmark + prime95 and it stops around 81C GPU and 93-94C CPU, only minor CPU throttling (2.1-2.4GHz throttle). No 800MHz throttle like in the N550JV. Not bad considering it only has one fan - that is not very noisy either.
-
What about surface temperatures during testing (especially left part)? I assume that with temps around 81C GPU and 93C CPU it has to be pretty hot.
-
If someone wants their laptop to light up like a Christmas tree everytime they push the power button then those people need their heads examined to be quite honest.
I would put my money forward toward more powerful components way before I'd even think about paying for some extra fancy lights on my laptop lol -
Hottest point after 15 mins of prime+ furmark measured to 41C, and that is the outer left edge outside the CAPS lock. That is pretty damn good if you ask me, about every other computer I've owned with dedicated GPU has passed 50C+ somewhere on keyboard during prime + furmark torture test. Bottom is about the same as well. Still I'd not use it on my lap during gaming since it would block airflow. -
-
hmmm for me it's hard to believe that ASUS has changed so much inside and you have two fans without additional vent holes.
-
Thank you for these informations.
How long is the battery on this laptop, I wonder if the battery lasts longer than the N550JV. -
I guess the battery time should be about the same. Not tested it myself yet.
N550JV has 59Whr battery, but slightly more power hungry screen (IPS), N56JR has 56WHr battery but regular TN screen. The N550JV might have slightly better battery time, but not by much. -

Thank you for your reply. So there is no significant difference between the two laptops on the autonomy.

Just received mine today. Great pc so far! Feels very solid and runs quite cold, which for me is one of the most important aspects. Subwoofer and sound quality are also great for a notebook!
I've installed Intel Extreme Tuning Utility and did a minor overclock (5%) and some undervolting (-80mV). Running quite stable without any crashes so far. Under load it went up to 89C on 3dMark Vantage(score 13806 if you're interested), and 81C while rendering with VRay. Idles at 48C. The bottom also stays cool.
For those interested in gaming, I only play League of Legends and it runs super smooth, with fps ranging from 85-145 depending on how much action is going on. The temperature on the keyboard remains comfortable for me, colder than my old gateway P-173.
Only things I dislike so far are the front USB ports(plugged stuff bug me with the mouse because of my small desk), and the strange LAN port that's a bit hard to remove the cable (gotta practice some more hehe).
That's my first post on a tech forum, just wanted to share my experience as those forums always helped me so much. Hope it can help somebody -
Thanks a lot for your review. Did you notice the sporadic fan behavior that some other users have mentioned? Does the fan spin up for short periods? Is it distracting or annoying?
-
It does get a bit loud above 75-ish. Nothing that really disturbs me as i'm usually playing music, and my last computer had a quite loud fan. I didn't really pay attention on short spins, maybe it's not loud enough for me to hear. I'll keep an eye on it and report later.

Hello there, question for N56JR owners or ones who have experience about this model. I'm really worried about cooling system. This laptop have great specs, GPU and CPU. I7 4th generation so far I know it can get warmer than I7 3rd generation + this nice GPU it can throttle very easy under full load as I guess. Owners of N56JR's can you download prime95 + furmark and run both of them at the same time to test how this laptop can handle maximum performance and if it will throttle?

Hi Guys! I'm from Poland and sorry for my English. I just bought my brand new N56JR-S4013H... and i have one (for me, it's really problem) question about speakers... i try to update bios, drivers, with and without sub, change the settings in maxxaudio & windows and nothing... when i play (no matter that are music, youtube, movie, game etc.) in some songs, in the same time i hear specific thing... my speakers give me the sound like chassis vibration or something like that. Can You test in yours machine? I upload three of songs where i have this problem (in background). The volume of "vibration" are bit low with lower volume but is still exist and disturb. Can you check it also on Asus Screensaver (it's with audio) because i have the same "vibration". I'm was on the store where i buy notebook and on the second N56JR it's the same.

Maybe this is normal but i'm worried about this. On output jack (external speakers or headphones) it isn't exist. -
@skoczi
Before I get interested in N56JR I've bought N56VZ with the same chasis and I got exact the same problem with chasis like you. I were worried about it too didn't know if it exist in every laptop but it seems like it does. -
@GhosteK
Hmm... do you test with mp3 that i posted?! Please test with this... probably it's normal in N56... but i want to have information of other owners N56... i make the thread on forum about this problem... and we will see
Oooooo.... EVERYTHING ELSE IS AMAZING -
@skoczi
I can't test it. I've returned it because of another issues in this specimen. Problem show up especially in songs with guitar.
Can you contact me via mail? [email protected] -
I have tested it with your songs. Everything is fine. No weird sounds. Case vibrates a bit but nothing to be worry about. Coming back to topic of 2nd fan i definitely don't have it (or can't hear it)
-
This issue is more common on laptops with decent speakers. -
Hi, is there any reviews about this bad boy? I am thinking about buying it but no reviews.
-
Are there empty mSATA or SSD slots inside the machine? If so, how easy is it to access them?
-

I have check it also by myself and temps are generally at the same lvl as OC Freak posted.
I was afraid of hot surface and noise but only hot spot is next to the caps lock and it is not unpleasant at all. You can barelly hear fan and under stress you can hear it but it is no so noisy as you would supsect.
I was playing only FarCry3 (1366x768, High settings, AAx2) and the game was very smoth (no idea how to check frames on win8 fraps doesn't want to work) and Diablo III (max settings 1080p).
The laptop is GREAT, screen is very nice (doesn't torture your eyes comparing to some glossy screens), TEMPS are great (with i7-4700HQ & GTX760M).
BUT there are alwasy buts
First of all battery - power safe mode, lowest brightness, wifi on - 3:30 - 4:00 h
Hard drive (no ssd) - can be changed
a bit bigger than regular 15,6'' (e.g. y580)
If battery life is not important to you than you should definitelly but this laptop.
comparing to Y510p... Lenovo has SLI and honestly SLI brings always problems. In benchamarks it is better but in real live brings more trouble - my opinion.

2) Just read somwhere that it is not working. Will instal today later and give you info.
3) No need in real life during playing temps are not so high. After BF4 test I will see if there is really such a need. This was suprising to me that it is no to hot and loud during playing for longer time.
4) No idea I tried at the beggining with max out and than going down. I tried with higher settings but didn't change the resolution. Will try later today.
5) LG Philips LP156WF1 -
ok same bad news now. After upgrating windows 8, GPU (gtx 760m) stop working.... (Code 43)..... When I wanted to force it during FarCry still running on Intet HD4600 :/.
tried to insal nvidia drivers and get info that I can only use ASUS drivers ???? Nevertheless reinstaling drivers gave nothing.
After checking on other forum there is probably issue with GPU and notebook is going back to retailer...
Opinions on the N56JR..
