I bought a N56JR-DS71-CA15.6" laptop and now after having a problem with the small text on the higher resolution 15.6" screen I'm considering the N750JV-DB71-CA instead from the same place I bought the above (Canada Computers). It's not much heavier and yet the screen may be easier to read etc. I know I can adjust the size of the text on the 15.6" laptop but I may find that clumsy. Not sure if the problem is the small text on the high res 15.6" screen or if it's the refresh rate of the screen. Either way I'm wondering if the N750JV-BD71-CA may be better for me.

This particular version is spec'd like this:

    Model N750JV-DB71-CA
    Operating System Window 8
    Type Gaming Notebook
    Processor PHD Intel i7-4700HQ
    Standard Memory 12GB
    Hard Drive 1TB
    Optical Drive BD writer
    Display Size 17.3"
    Touch Screen NO
    Graphics Nvidia Geforce GT750M
    Bluetooth YES
    Warranty 1 Year

Do you have the N750JV-DB71-CA? How do you like it?

The refresh rate will be the same (about 60 Hz) on the larger screen as well. Quite a few people struggle to see the text on the high resolution screens, especially small ones; you can circumvent this by adjusting the DPI, but it's entirely up to you whether to shell out for the larger screen or not. I think even with the extra two inches of screen real estate (less than two inches, really), you won't see a marginal difference and you may end up needing to adjust the DPI or lower the resolution a bit after all.

Yeah, I don't think refresh rate is not going to be an issue. I was wondering if it was the small text at close distance or if it was the led brightness via pwm issue. Could be multiple things together. I am getting new glasses that will help for a few years. A 17.3" screen should have a noticably lower dpi, but whether it makes enough difference is the question.

I am going to check it out at the store to get a better understanding of the text size issue. You may be right that it doesn't make enough of a difference, but I may as well go and check it out before my 14 days are up. If the screen is larger, even if I have to increase the text size, perhaps I will have to increase it less with the 17.3"...thereby conserving desktop space.

As far as the laptop goes, I am interested in it in general. I like the idea of the larger screen which still appears to have reasonably wide viewing angles, the ability to have two hdd (or ideally, an ssd and an hdd). A BD writer comes with, which is nice, but not a big deal. The laptop is only 7.5 LBS vs the N56JR's 6 LBS. Many Asus gaming 17.4" laptops are 10 LBS! Also, the video card in the 17.3" N750JV is only about 10% slower than in the N56JR and I don't game much if at all.

Anybody have experience with the N750JV? Do you like it?

I've looked at the 17.3" laptops and the screens are not that great. Hard to figure out what to do. 1920x1080 or 1600x900 in either of a 15.6" or 17.3" laptop...but the 17.3" screen don't look very good. Some 1080 17.3 have moire and others just don't have as good viewing angle as the 15.6". I guess there are compromises. Maybe I should stick with the 1080 res 15.6 and get reading glasses. Man this presbyopia thing sucks.
