I bought the asus n61jq-x1 laptop on newegg.com but I received an hp envy 17 in the mail. I don't know what do do. My brother says I should keep it as it has better specs but I don't like the look of it and really was looking forward to the asus n61. I can't decide what to do and if I should return it and get the asus. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you

I honestly do not trust HP/Compaq when it comes to laptops, poor cooling designs... parts that just shouldnt be in laptops are present.. but I dont know man.. thats about a 500$ difference. Hope they send me the same :3

I'd keep it. The 5850 is FAR better than the 5730. Also, build quality on the Envy series is generally much better than the budget Pavilion series.

Keep it and sell it. Then buy something better than the two models from ASUS.

I like how nobody said return it because you got something by accident that you did not pay for and keeping it would be the wrong thing to do. No one even remotely suggested that returning it it would be the right thing to do. :D

    Nice moral compasses.

Hers another moral perspective for you; newegg screwed up and sent the wrong laptop and as a result wasted someones precious time with their little mistake. What if newegg had sent a much cheaper laptop by mistake compared to his original order? He would be forced to either keep the cheaper laptop and ask for some money back or be forced to send it back to newegg to receive his proper order. Either way he would lose something in this alternative. (Time if he returned it or an inferior system if he kept it)

In this case the only difference is that he got a superior machine compared to his original order, so its either he plays nice, returns it and loses in time or he keeps it.

CAll NewEgg tell them to send a prepaid shipping tag and get what you paid for. That is not a $500 inconvenience. Besides that, they will catch up with their error and probably charge you for the difference anyway and the credit card company will support them as you received the higher priced goods and apparently accepted them.

This I can agree on. If the difference is that high between the two then they might actually change you for it. Just make sure to let them know of the "inconvenience" it has caused you and maybe you'll get something out of it.

Or tell them that although you ordered something else, you're going to assume that the item you received was a similar-replacement due to low stock levels of your other purchase. Or don't say that exactly, ask them how you're supposed to register the item for warranty work. When they ask to ship it back, be reluctant and make it obvious you're already started using it and have all your files on it, etc etc.

Since it's all true, it's not "morally" wrong to frame your situation in a light that suites you. People frame situations all the time - you avoid farting in front of your inlaws, you want to show yourself "off".

they can't charge you unauthorized charges.

it was their mistake, if he wants to keep it they cannot charge him extra.

I don't know man. I'm no fan of HP's designs (with the flashy, ugly prints they FORCE onto you. Blegh), but I know the Envy is a pretty decent machine. Could always sell it and buy something nicer.

I emailed Newegg of the situation. The envy 17 was nice but I was really set on the asus and I won't get a warranty or support if I keep the Envy (no sales receipt).

"newegg screwed up and sent the wrong laptop and as a result wasted someones precious time with their little mistake."
In dollars how much is that precious time? I once got a $20 credit from newegg because their system generated a false invoice and sent me an email. I was not billed or anything. $20 for a misfired email. When I think newegg I do not think "terrible company with poor CS policies".

"What if newegg had sent a much cheaper laptop by mistake compared to his original order?"
Newegg would pay for the shipping for him to return the laptop. If he wanted to keep the inferior product, newegg would have refunded him and charged him for the right product. Either way he would not be forced to do anything.

That was a bad mistake from a business standpoint for newegg to make. How did an HP Envy get mistaken for an Asus N61?

We should all support good businesses. When we do the right thing we are ensuring that good businesses stay in business. We all make mistakes, try to remember that.

You have no obligation to send an item back if it was shipped to you mistakenly as long as it IS addressed to you.

    Ask for a discount/refund etc.

Newegg has always been good for trying to make up for their mistakes. I once got a $400 credit. Yes. $400. Due to a messup with a $1,600 laptop order.

Hey guys, I forgot I started this thread 8 months ago (seems like ages ik) but I chose to stick with the envy 17 and its been running great ever since I got it (August of last year). I definitley made the right choice with the envy 17, I got loads of games on it and tons of applications. I mostly use it for video editing with after effects cs5, sony vegas pro9, and cinema 4d and the 8gb ram helps alot. If anyone is deciding weather or not to buy the envy 17, its ultimately your choice; it does get hot but its pretty sleek and thin given the specs. Overall I made the right decision on keeping the envy 17 and thanks to all on this forum.

You do get a warranty on the Envy. They will go by manufacture date if you don't have a receipt.

I am sure that guy immediately applied for an RMA and got his envy back. The only loser here is the newegg.
