Yahoo Taiwan currently has W3J for NT$49900 and free shipping http://sh2.yahoo.edyna.com/ewsn/item.asp?item_id=1110596 (Aprox. $1,773.77 Canadian, or $1,545.85 US).

I'm not sure how much custom tax/duties I have to pay if I order it from them and deliver to Canada, heard is about 25% of the value of the good, does anyone know? Should I wait for my local dealer or buy it now online? Any thought/comment is appreciated, thx.

By the time you ordered got it shipped got it through customs and got it to your house you can buy the W3j in Canada. Seriously the longest you will wait is a month to have it in Canada and ordering it from Taiwan would be about the same anyway and a waste of extra cash.

Plus you'll be paying the same duties that are already going to be included in the canadian price....... and then the same taxes.... I honestly love when people do this every 6 months or so because then everyone gets to see how expensive it is. It's one thing if you want a model that's not coming here at all (which I've done myself on a couple of occasions), but it's not a good idea.

Duties could be between 15-25%.... For things going into Europe, I've heard of up to 45% (which is crazy, but it's meant to keep people ordering from within their own country.

Give Danny at CanadaSys a ring and see if he can save you one once they get them.....

I think you get a choice on the OS language at boot up...I'm almost positive it won't be a english only keyboard...It'll most likely have both languages on each key. I'm not sure which will be dominant on each key though. If you buy it there and can't live with the keyboard, then you can always get a replacement english only keyboard when you get back...they're like $15 or so and just snap into place quite easily.

All in all, If you can find a really good deal on one while you're actually there, and get it back home without paying any fees or taxes...then there isn't really any other downside.

Keep us all posted on what you end up doing. If you buy one from Taiwan and bring it back, I'm sure we'd all like to know the details and what the final cost in USD was. :)

can anyone confirm the possibility of OS boot up in english on a taiwanese unit?

im pretty certain no duty will be involved if one leaves the packing box behind and carry the notebook through as one would travelling. i always travel with my notebook, never been hassled by customs.

keyboard... i suppose i can live with a bilingual one, hey may be that'll inspire me to learn typing in chinese :D

i will keep you updated once i get to taiwan... wont be til may tho!

Someone in here just recently bought an Asian ensemble model with XP Pro in it, and they confirmed that they had the option to choose a language when they first booted.

Someone else confirm this for Doodling...I'm like 99.9% shure about this. :)

    that's the idea :)

Too bad w3j was not available when I went back last xmas... :(

    2050 + 307.5(15%TAX) = $2357.5 Canadian Price
    $1,773.77 = Taiwan Price

    $2357.5 - $1,773.77 = $583.73

If I am in Taiwan now and buy this sweet laptop, it would save me at least 500 bucks Canadian, which i can spend it on something else.

    Hi Folks,

Actually living in Taiwan. The main computer markets here are pretty good, they'll seel you the PC with an English version OS no prob. I've seen the W3j, it's basically an upgrade to the w3V ? the one with the ati x-600. Last week you could have baught one of those for about US$1,031. I held off hoping the w3 would come with a better gpu...and boy did it. What I am tryin gto figure out now is, how will all those great games look on the screen (small, that I know); however, will say doom 3 be streached out looking? If I hook up to an external monitor, will it can I adjust the screen resolution?
Btw - I work with a lot of computer guys, they're all kinda so/so when it comes to Asus "get a Sony or a Fujitu" they tell me. They are however all agreed on one thing...aviod Acer at all costs.

My friends in Taiwan also told me something about ASUS sends out the better quality laptops to Europe / North America and leaves the ****pier/less quality ones in Taiwan... I wonder why they think this way.

As far as the O/S goes, it depends where you buy the laptop. At Nova...or actually at Bade St... I don't know...we're talking Taiwan here. As for Asus shipping better quality machines to EU, US...once again, this is Taiwan. Some of the best hi-tech toys in the world, and a legislture where law-makers often settle arguments with their fists. More Starbucks then you'll ever see (I count 7 within walking distance of my work, one in my building)...however, try asking for milk instead of cream for your americano..no can do....this is Taiwan.

Was wondering if some of you folks could help me out. I am totally drooling about the W3J but I don't quite understand how games are going to work on the widescreen. Is doom going to look all streached out, or will it have black bars running down the side. Has anyone here ever tried running games on an x-1600 - I read about these 3-d benchmarks; however, I have no reference point.

O yea, one other thing, maybe I am a little spoiled over here, but comparitivly, the w3j is a little on the heafty side. Was just about to buy an m5 then this came out.

now, does that mean yes they export better machines than the domestic ones, or no?

i have zero gaming experience (i can kick anyone's ass at tetris tho :p ) but go to http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/ they'll have all the solutions n hacks you'll need.

do you know or can you ask your retailer when the a8jm is coming out in taiwan?
