My apologies if this has already been asked/answered but I had a good search around and couldn't find anything.
I own an original Asus G1 and i'm wondering if it's possible to upgrade the hard drive to a Seagate Momentus 7200.3 SATA-II 320gb? If anyone has any experience of doing this your advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again,
Confy

I do not know about this particular HDD in this particular laptop, so as always there is the possibility of things going wrong -- but, from a general point of view, I do not see any problems that might arise. Make sure the HDD is 9.5mm tall (as opposed to 12mm which may not fit) but I think the 320 model is. Make sure, nevertheless.

Thanks for the response. I've had a look at the specs for the Seagate and it's 9.5mm so hopefully all will be well.

It is the worst time to upgrade with that HDD. Seagata has already introduced Momentus 7200.4 series and it was proposed to be in the market in Q4-2008.
If you look at the online retailers like newegg, they had a very sharp price decrease for the 7200.3 series since they are trying to get rid of the old series. I would seriously recommend you to wait for a few weeks and ugrade to the 7200.4...
I am planning to upgrade to 7200.4 as soon as it becomes available on newegg. The 7200.4 will have capacities ranging from 250GB to 500GB with 16MB cache, 7200RPM speed and free fall sensor in all the models. -
The new ones might be better but they will be more money. Now is a great time to buy if anyone wants a deal.

And I got a G1S.. so I think your G1 will be just fine? -
I have an original G1 and just upgraded to the Seagate Momentus 7200.3 320GB HDD.
Bought it a Zipzoomfly for 87.99. Ordered it with 2 day service and it came in 2 days.
I used Acronis True Image 11 and within 2 hours I had a completely imaged hard drive. I have my G1 configured with dual boot XP and Vista. It was an easy and smooth change over.
My Impressions so far:
It's faster than the stock Seagate 160Gb 5400 RPM that came the with laptop, it's not eye popping faster but definitely faster.
Sound wise it's quieter as well, I can't even hear it.
My temps are about the same, maybe just a bit cooler, I use O&O disk gadget in Vista to monitor the temps, and notice that it tends to run about 1 degree cooler most of the time. 41 to 42 degrees are my normal temps.
I use a NC2000 Zalman cooler with my laptop.
Overall pretty happy with the drive, It's nice having lots of free space. -
Brilliant. The cheapest I'd found so far was Newegg so thanks for the heads up on Zipzoomfly. Out of stock at the moment but i'll keep an eye open.
And thanks for all the other info too, good to know the temps are comparable and that it's quieter
Hurray for upgrade. -
Single platter generally means less heat and noise and if the .4 generation has 10-20% better data transfer speeds I can easily prefer it over the 320GB 7200.3 model...
