Ok, well I said I had some more information last night that I wanted to present today. From today, we should have the W2's in our hands within a month. Bugs are still getting worked out with the TV tuner software, but I finally confirmed absolutely everything about the unit last night. With that, we feel there is finally enough confirmed information that we can start an advanced order and have these units in our hands within a months time.

Before I give the link, I think there are a couple notable confirmations that should be new to you.

    1. Remote control is confirmed
    2. Slot load is confirmed..... to do this they had to choose the 8x dual format instead of dual layer..... but slot load is so much cooler.
    3. 2.13ghz (Pentium-M 770) is confirmed due to the price drop at the end of the month.
    4. Final dimensions are on our page, but I wanted to note that the weight of "under 7.5 lbs" is just that.... with the extra weight of the slot load drive, the remote control, the tv tuner... this will be the weight we're all going to see..... if the unit used a tray load drive, no remote or tv tuner... it would be just about the 7.25 pounds that Asus is going to advertise it at.

    Enjoy.......

Wow, such a nice system, but it's way out of my budget. Any idea about battery life?

Asus wants to claim 4 hours and we're going to believe it.... We're listing it as 3-4 hours. Given the Z70v can get 5 hours and they have it listed at 5, with the slightly larger screen, x700 gpu and tv tuner... that's probably conservative as it is. Given what we know about thier consistant battery life across all of the models, I figure saying 3 is going to be pretty good and would be the life you'd get for above average work loads. I'd venture to guess plenty of people will be able to get more if the wanted, but this is a performance machine and should be used like one most of the time........ Based on past performance, I'd say under a maximum load, you could probably get as little as just about 2 hours, but usually that sort of load is something you're only going to be doing when you're at your desk, plugged in anyway......

For the most part I think the average user of this notebook will be getting between 3-3 and 3/4 hours.....

Woo hoo, slot loading is doubly as cool as a clunky tray. Apple and Acer are the only other companies that have used this...I'm sure there are a few more, but it's a feature I wish we had more. That's a pretty penny for sure, but it's a high-end system so to be expected, thank goodness processor prices are dropping a bit or we'd be paying $3K.

Well they are going with the 2.13 instead of the 2.0 because prices are falling..... so price stayed as expected, but the cpu speed went up.

I don't think battery life is going to be a make or break decision on this machine really though, if it's running a media center os, has a remote control and 17" screen and TV tuner it's meant more for being an all-in-one desktop replacement/media center replacement style device. And in such a situation you'd have it plugged in.

I think most people would rather take the price drop and use 2.0 than go with 2.13.

That wasn't up to me...Asus is going for a top end system...... you have to consider that they're going to put a 2.0 in other models by september some time too...

I think you are wrong here, the machine is expensive with or withoud such a small price drop so people who want this machine (like me who allready ordered) want the best machine and are not searching for a bargain ;).
Anyway, I would like to see my dutch model getting the 2.13 gHz as well :D

One question about the W2V. What are those holes in the front of the laptop? Are those RCA-ins?

    14.33" (length) x 10.39" (width) x 1.26" (height)

is that right?? seems to be the same as other 15.4" widescreen models and
even smaller than a 17" powerbook?

    17" powerbook
    Width: 15.4 in
    Depth: 10.2 in

    asus a6
    13.9" (length) x 11.2" (width) x 1.4" (height)

    toshiba m45
    Height: 1.5 in
    Width: 14.4 in
    Depth: 10.8 in

That is kind of odd. My Fujitsu n6010's 17" screen is 14.4" wide and I would have to imagine that all 17" screens are the same width. Maybe 15.33 instead of 14.33?

If you look real closely, there are 4 holes...... and a bunch of lights..... The four physical holes are your normal headphones-out & S/PDIF combo jack, microphone-in, line-in, and then you have a video & audio in jack...... this is something that was on the W1 and not a lot of people realized it had this option.....

    That's right... it's 395 x 288 x 33.8 mm ........

    which should be 15.55" x 11.34 x 1.33" .......

As of the end of the day on Friday, about 1/4 of the initial 40 W2v's that are coming in the first shipment are taken. We still have a month to go before they come in, and this is a very high end system..... Given the rate they've sold so far for the smaller shipment Asus is making to the states.... this is selling a bit faster than the W3v did. Since all of those were sold before it's release, I would expect the same for this long awaited monster.....

Hey Justin just to clarify...does this mean that your website is wrong? and that what you have listed above is the real dimensions of the W2

I also have a question about how the W2 receives TV input/turns into a TV tuner...Is it through coax input or some other means?

What's listed above should be what's listed on the site.... I believe we just made a clerical error stating 14.55 instead of 15.55..... like everyone said, it would be impossible to fit a 17" widescreen with in a 14.55 wide frame..... as soon as I realized it, I went ahead and did the millimeter to inch conversion and realized it was wrong and corrected the list.

If you take a look at this picture below.... the first plug from the right (a mini rca) is where a little plug goes which converts from coaxal to that mini rca.... I've got an original W1 that we tested from last year with the tv tuner in it, and it's exactly how that worked. The theory behind it is you attach the converter cable to the coax cable at home where you mostly use it and then when you want to hook it up you just push the little plug in, instead of having to deal with the thick, hard to bend coaxal cable or worse, having to screw it on.

    14.33" (length) x 10.39" (width) x 1.26" (height)
~Less than 7.5 LBS w/ standard 8 Cell Battery, DVD Burner, TV Tuner, Remote Control

and i think this is the picture u were talking about [IMG]

I don't know how that got changed back, but I changed that information the other day. I'd say maybe your page needs to be refreshed, but those pages are coming from our database server and are always pulled up with up to the second information.

    That's the picture, yes.
