    My poor z63a has been nothing but a delight the two and a half years I've owned her, but now she's running super-hot all the time doing very basic things. I've cleaned out the fan (haven't yet looked at the heatsink), and was wondering how bad it is. I was hoping she'd hold out until I graduate in May. With an external fan continually blowing air on it and running Firefox/Photoshop/Thunderbird, I'm running at local 59C, remote 80C. The remote has gotten up to the high 90s without the fan blowing on it and automatically shut off. Can I save the apple of my eye?

    I would check the heatsink. If there is a heavy dust buildup, the best fan in the world won't help.

    Take the fan out and make sure you also clean the air vents / grates.

    I'm not sure what you mean by "heatsink"? Is it the air vents through the heatsink? Then it's the same thing I mean. Dust doesn't usually collect in other places on the heatsink.

    While you're at it, you might also replace the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU (unless they use thermal pads in which case they're better left alone).

    @E.B.E.

    Yeah, "heatsink" is referring to the "fins" on the heatsink, where a massive amount of dust can accumulate depending on how the system is used.
