Just a general question, I'm considering buying an Audigy 2 ZS for my Z71V. Fits right into the PCMCIA slot.

But I'm looking at the more recent notebooks, and I'm not seeing any of these listed. I'm not that up to date with the technology, so is PCMCIA outdated and getting replaced nowadays?

    Thanks for your time.

Most notebooks today use the faster express card slots rather than PCMCIA cards. In fact I'm not sure if there are any notebooks that still include PCMCIA card slots.

You got it right, PCMCIA is being replaced by ExpressSlot, but the conversion is still slow. It's been 'out' for almost half a year, and looking around, there is still very limited ES peripheral items compared to PCMCIA.

That's correct, all newer laptops are coming with ExpressSlot instead of the PCMCIA slot. That sound card is one of the most popular devices for the PCMCIA slot.

You may want to look at the Asus G1, it is a new laptop, and it comes with a PCMCIA slot.

I lot of business notebooks including either PCMCIA or both formats. PCMCIA isn't dead yet, but it's going to be in a few years.

PCMCIA Slot II, which is in the G1 should be safe for another 3 years right?
Even though notebook manufactureres are putting expresscard slots, they will still release new PCMCIA cards right?

3 years is a long time to predict when it comes to computers. What kind of card are you worried about?

I dont really have a use for any card, but I just like to know, I haven't got a an empty flap in the side of the laptop for nothing.

I am aware that new graphics/surround sound modules are coming out from Asus which boost the graphics performance of a notebook, and Im pretty sure i read they were expresscard slot only.

If in 3 years time, I dont feel like upgrading, but want to give my pc graphics a boost, I would like to know I could do so.

If you can wait, they're working on an external PCI Express x16 cable so eventually that'll replace the current ExpressCard based external video card setups.
