    Hi All,

I've been doing some research on the new Panasonic drives that are available for the Z70V, and I've been finding that people are having great difficulty burning at faster than 2X, even with the highest quality media (Taiyo Yuden). Can anyone comment on this drive's DVD burning? Has anyone successfully got it to burn faster than 2X?

    Thanks,
    Sandeep

May very much depend on what software they are using. You may have to update the firmware of the drives as it may not be identifying that media at 8x or whatever speed. Also, the format you're trying to use is important. The speeds it will write are stated as below.

It appears as though the Panasonic drive has absolutely no source to update firmware. Even if you look under Matshiita's brand name. Could it be a problem of the optical drive and hard drive on the same IDE channel... does the Z70V have this problem?

Its looking increasingly like I'll just take the $70 CDN I"ll save from foregoing the DVD+-RW drive and buy a nice NEC with a USB casing.

    Thanks,
    Sandeep

Mine came with a Samsung TS-L532A. And as for it being on the same IDE port, I don't think that's a problem. Actually, most laptops have a single port, including some SATA (with adapter). There's just no room to put multiple ports inside.

Z71 has only 1 IDE - Z70v has 2 (2 masters / 2 slaves)....... This is becasue the Z71v has sATA and the Z70v does not.

I would just go with the samsung, it fits in fine, it's fits the bezel and it burns faster than 2x. You won't go wrong with that one.

That Toshiba/Samsung drive is one of the two drives that Asus is using. This means they make bezels for either...... the other is the panasonic which I would prefer, but random places have one or the other.

From my experience with the dvd drives..... for my desktop I have a great plextor and a slot load pioneer.........

However for a laptop, I love the pioneers that they used in the W1....... after that though the Panasonic would be my 2nd favorite with the Toshiba... now Toshiba/Samsung..... coming in 3rd. All are great and work like they should I just feel my order is based on media capatibility. If what you normally use works... it really doesn't matter what you get.

    Hey Justin,
I just wanted to mention something while we're on the topic of Matsh:ta DVD burners. When Asus were figuring out what dvd drive to put in the W2, you said it would be either a tray-load dual layer or a dual format slot-load, and now it is coming with a slot load. I know for a fact that the Acer Ferrari 4005wlmi comes with a Matsh:ta DL slot-load dvd burner. I was wondering why they couldn't have used the same dvd burner in the W2, since they are able to get the drives from Matsh:ta?

I wasn't aware of this and I believe that the W2's drive was a Pioneer, but I'm not 100% certain. I know that the Pioneer was the *best* drive they've ever used and it was supposed to be this or that...... so I'm taking it the slot-drive is Pioneer. However, I can't confirm it. If you can find me the model number of that drive in the Acer...... and maybe even if you want to do a little more work for me and find model numbers for Pioneer's slot load.... I can send them to Asus and find out what they used and if it was Panasonic, why not DL... blah blah blah... Asus did say that it was tray DL or slot DF....... same price. We all know that slot is more expensive, so perhaps the slot DL would have added another $100 to the price and put it out of range.

    I don't know.
