I just saw this on PowerNotebooks.com:
Then, with the recent introduction of the new "Dothan" version of the Pentium M, the L2 On-die cache is now FOUR TIMES that of a Pentium 4 (2,048k as opposed to 512k used in the Pentium 4).
>>With its efficient architecture, and the extended L2 On-die cache, the performance of a Pentium M is roughly 1.7 to over 2 times that of a Pentium 4 processor. L2 On-die cache is where the processor stores the instruction sets that it uses most often. Just picture two carpenters each up on their own ladder. They both have tool belts on...but one of them has a tool box on his paint bucket shelf as well. Now, they both charge the same amount per hour. Which one are you going to hire?<<
Any comment, anyone? This is pertinent when purchasing a whitebook rig.

I prefer the PM for notebooks for 3 main reasons 1)less heat. 2)longer battery life. 3)generally thinner and lighter.
That said, I would need to know a bit more about your planned usage/needs before I can say for sure which would be best.

My planned usage needs are: graphic design, games, internet, possibly video editing in the future, definitely iPod, etc....

of course,Pentium M
1.long battery
2.same performance,even better sometimes than P4(except prescott)
3.mobile(wireless)

Can you play Doom 3, etc? (with the right graphics card?)
And about the AMD 64 is it so important to "be prepared for the 64 bit revolution?" -
I play doom3(med to high settings) with my M6Ne (PM & ATI9700). With games the biggest bottleneck is still the GPU, thus you are better off getting the best GPU you can afford (ie ATI9700 or 9800), also as the GPU is the rate limiting factor, the real world high end gaming performace betw. a PM-AMD-P4 is minimal. Thus I would still go a PM for the bonus of mobility. But thats just me. Note if you have other uses besides gaming, such as content creation a P4 or AMD may be better.
There is a good article over a anandtech (http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2129)that will help you pickout the best CPU for your needs

What kind of content creation would necessitate the P4 or Athlon? I use Pagemaker, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Dreamweaver. I may go on to some digital video...maybe flash as well.
That should be all right with a Pentium M, a 128MB video card, and 1GB RAM, right? -
Things like 3dMax, divX & mp3 encoding etc run a lot better on a p4 compared to a PM. For your usages, you should be fine with a PM and lots of ram. Although if you start running lots of PS filters on super large images then a p4 may pull out infront.
