A friend of mine has the W3J and I saw on his desktop a little icon that has different performance settings like "Quiet Office" or "Game" or "High performance" or "Super performance"....

WHat is the difference between these? WHich one do you use for gaming?

My friend cant decide whether super performance or game is best lol

This is Power4Gear that you're referring to. Those settings are all power saving settings and can be modified a bit. They mainly limit or set the cpu to designated settings. I forget all of them, but the cpu settings are locked, while other power saving settings are open to modify and save. Basically, on the low end in the email mode your cpu will stay limited to I think about 800mhz (which is great if you're only doing im,email, internet), and that saves you heat and battery life. On the high end, you can lock the cpu into the full speed modes like high and super performance, which is good in certain situations, but you really don't want your system running full blast most of the time.... or it can be left automatic.

Now, the other thing most people visually see with this program is the ability to modify the brightness or the backlight level of the lcd at various modes.... Maybe leave 100% for when plugged in or in super performance mode... and maybe 10-15% when in email mode. The cpu speed and lcd brightness are the two BIGGEST drains on power... and that's basically what that program allows you to tweak for different situations.

How the heck do you add a CPU performance setting to a preset configuration that doesn't already have one? I just want to take the CPU down to 50% in Quiet Office mode, but the CPU performance menu is greyed out, and I can't seem to find any way to change it. The Battery Saver config has the option, though. I am confused.

The cpu options are going to be locked, I used to know how to change them back when the version of that software only had three options... now they're all locked down. I believe dvd mode is just about 50%...... you're better off using that mode and changing the other settings to your liking with in that option.

"Quiet Office" is meant for low cpu use - for office type programs, but also to keep the system quiet... the slower the cpu, the less heat that's produced, and therefore the lower the rpm's of the fan, which then in turn means less cfm being pushed, and in the end that means less "noise" from the blowing exhaust.

So... you sort of don't want to mess with that. However, I did notice the cpu options in the latest version. What that's doing is letting you chose the MAX cpu power under DC modes. There are 3 DC modes, with the top DC mode being DVD (which is about 75% cpu). At least these are DC only modes as set in the program. Those are the ones that you can set your cpu limits, while the other few that are both DC and AC settings are all differently. When you're talking about tweaking your system for the better battery life, you're going to be doing that on one of the lower settings, it's just a matter of how MUCH you're going to tweak your system. The system will still keep the cpu use low if it's not in need, but if it is, it'll pump up the speed. What you're doing there is just limiting how far it can go up. Sometimes it's not going to matter if the system takes a little more time, if it's going to be lasting even more time on battery power.

So whats the difference between the "game" seeting and the "super performance setting"...which one would best be used for gaming?

I managed to set up one of the battery power modes to limit my CPU to 50% and take my screen brightness down to about 40%, which helps with battery comsumption. The program itself is ridiculously counter-intuitive, though; has anyone tried the replacement BatteryLife.exe that makes the program a little more usable, or any other replacement?

Is there a way? I right click on the my computer and it says:

    Genuine Intel CPU @2.16 GHz
994 Mhz, 2.0 GB of Ram

Is there anyway to tell if its a merom or yonah?

SO if you just close the lid and then open it later on...there is no way to recover.

Is this a known issue? If so...is there a fix?

No,If windows turns off the monitor and/or harddrives there will be no return,I found no fixes but disabling both of them in the power options.

i actually found out through a series of tests that its not standby thats the problem. the problem is the combination of standy and video/monitor off/time out. I currently have all my "video timeout"s set to never (i also have hibernation and hard disk off set to never. Basically im left with standby and screensaver. Had no problems since.

ati mobility catalyst 6.8 (the newer 6.9s seem to be giving users many problems)

i dont think there is any difference between the game and super performance setting in terms of cpu use (both set to max).

Question, Did you hibernation/stand by ever work for you before? If so, Did you recently do a windows update? I'm asking because i had the same issues with my W3V. But i did find out the updated marvel lan driver had something to do with it. I reverted back to the stock lan drivers and hibernation/standby works again. Maybe you could give that a shot. If that doesn't work, you can always redownload the updated lan files again.

I rarely put my W3J into standby mode mainly because i carry it from one lecture theater to another. Usually its off or its on hibernate. I've set it to go into hibernate when i close the screen and it has always came out of hibernation when asked to. I've had problems with it coming out of standby which is why i disabled it.

There is an option edit the cpu speed in the configuration option in the power4gear for DC modes only. If you go into the setting and left click the cpu speed, a drop down menu comes down and you can choose, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%.

Using CPUZ, both game and high performance setting has the CPU running at variable speed. Unless you start doing CPU intensive things the speed sits at 997-998mhz. And it ramps up the speed if you play games where as in super performance it locks it on 1995mhz even if you are just idling.

I have the same question. What about the Omega drivers? Are they better for games etc? Wich is the better one for games? I have the ati x1600 256mb (512 hypermemory) in my f3ja. Im currently running the catalystdrivers.

Edit: I cannot install the catalystdriver (v6.9) downloaded from the ati site. It says it does not support my computer and I have to contact my computer manufacturer for support. Wich catalystdrivers are installable on asus notebooks? thanks

Software issues have been reported where the w3j and probably many other ensembles will not recover after standby. So far there have been a few solutions
    1. Update bios
    2. Reinstall using the factory provide restore cd to the whole disk instead of using 2 partitions.
    3. In power options in control panel uncheck the checkbox that says prompt for password on resume.

The above suggestions by the posters probably work too

f2 to enter bios. In the info page it tells you the cpu speed but not the architecture.

well im using the omega one and its perfectly fine, i play most of my game in hight setting ( Cs: s, DoD : s, battlefield2, oblivion ).

Before using the omeage driver, i used ati mobility catalyst 6.8 and its was great too.

Depend on you, test both and choose one :)

that score can only be obtained with a merom unless you are overclocking. 2.2??? you mean 2.16 right?

I got the little program that can tell what CPU is in the comp...

    It says merom T7400.

So this one is modded...my friend is out of town so I want to ask him how he got a merom in this puppy haha.

Also, I thought 3dmark was GPU depandant not CPU...so why would a merom have better game performance than say a yonah?

CPU usage isn't locked permanently. Right click on the taskbar icon for P4G and deselect Auto Performance. Then right click and select configuration. From there select a setting and click on CPU performance on the right. The grayed out bar on the top will light up and you can set the mode to whatever % you want.
