Some pictures with comments of my new Asus W3V notebook. Just to make you a little bit jealous.
I've already upgraded the memmory with 2x 512 MB 533Mhz DDR2 Ram and traded in the 1x 512MB 400Mhz DDR2 module that came with the notebook. Now the memory runs in dual channel mode according to the BIOS. It runs flawlessly with the two memory modules installed. Fortunately in The Netherlands Asus doesn't mind if you upgrade the memory. I called them just to be sure.

I'll try to comment on the pictures.

Here you can see the items that came with my notebook.
This package is specific for The Netherlands.
    2 batteries, 1x 4800mAh and 1x 2400mAh
    128MB flashstick
    Travelers drawer
    Logitech RF mouse

This is the viewing sweetspot of the screen.

The horizontal viewing angle is better then I expected.

    Same here.

    Here it gets slightly worse.

The vertical viewing angle is worse, but still very usable.

    Same here.

I hope you enjoyed viewing the pictures. If you have any questions, just post them here and I will try to answer them. It may take a while before I reply, but that is because I have important exams on friday.

I really love how the W3v looks with the lid CLOSED... and looking at it from the front. It's a real beauty... I love the brushed aluminum.

I still can get the original memory module. But according to Asus in The Netherlands I don't need it.
Maybe I'll get it just to be sure.

I think you should've kept the original RAM module that came with it. Since you'd need it for warranty...guess that's too late...

Very nice machine, congrates and great photography [ :)] A few questions for when you get a chance. Where is the on/off button? Is it on the side of the screen down the bottom? I noticed that there is a blue light there. How long does your battery last? Does the palm rest get warm? What temp does the CPU run at and what speed does your fan opperate at those temps?
    Cheers
BTW your brave getting a new toy before exams, I'm still playing with my V6V to the detriment of my studies [ :D] Last night I sat down with a friend who's got a mac and we wirelessly linked up and swapped about 2 meg of files in about 15 minutes. I love technology [ :p]

Nice little photo review you did that. I'm HAPPY to finally see someone take some shots (not with a camera phone) and intelligently break down shots at different angles.

If ANYTHING..... I'm willing to bet the final US product, had the colors and materials of this machine..... this is exactly the same in color and materials as the shots on our site right now (which I was afraid of) ...... but showing this off is very good for the W3..... the angles in which you start to get just a reflection and start to not be able to see the screen any more are angles in which no one would be using a 14" notebook anyway.... I'd love to get an idea as far at degree wise..... from dead center..... how many degrees both horizonally and vertically can you comfortably use the screen? IE: 25 to the left and right....... a total of 50 degrees..... 15 up and down... a total of 30 (whatever) ... that'd be great to know.

The only thing that still bugs me is that not EVERYONE understands the difference in packages worldwide..... you have a 1.7ghz cpu and an 80gb hard drive..... other places have other things...... But the couple things that I spot that I know if we dont' get...... someone is going to say... "i saw a picture of what came with them on notebook review and I didn't get them" ......

    1. the wireless mouse.... I know on a whole is sucks and the only reason it was bundled with the W5 this year after knowing how it worked with the S5.... is becasue it has built in RF and thats just cool.... So in the US we might get the aluminum usb logitech that comes with the W1 and V6.

    2. 2 batteries...... I noticed you got the the capactity and standard... and they look the same.... are they the same exact physical size? I know the bigger battery is probably more dense, so it's heavier.. but by how much? In other words..... so you think you'll just be using the high cap. battery or does the weight and size of the smaller one make it better to use most of the time.

    3. We never get those little thumb drives in our packages.... if thats what that little white thing is.

    Thanks,
    Justin

I'm loving my W3V, it's almost everything I've hoped for. It looks great and feels great. It's very solid and sturdy.

I've just had it for one day and I will try to explain my findings to you:

The notebook does get a little bit warm but not excessive under normal usage. The left palm rest doesn't get warm and the right palm rest gets slightly warm. This is probably because the CPU and GPU are located on the right upper side of the notebook. I haven't yet measured what temperatures the notebook gets, but I will do this tonight. The fan is almost always on but hardly noticeable. It's much quieter then my previous notebook, the Sony S2XP. The on/off button is on the right side on the hinge where the blue light is. It's a nice detail.

The colour of the palm rests are different from the pictures that are on PROPortable's website. Mine are more grey/silver and the one on the website is more dark grey/black.

The screen is awesome. It's so much more vibrant than a 'normal' LCD screen. Viewing angles are good. I don't need bigger angles. Tonight I will also measure under which angle you can still view the screen comfortably.

There is one thing with the screen that I don't like. I can see the rows of pixels which make up the screen. I see horizontal lines on my screen. I think this is normal for this screen and it's not defective. It's not that bad, but still, I noticed it.

The wireless mouse is nice, but I still wouldn't use it. Although it's an optical mouse I still need to plug in the mouse receiver. I think this is to fragile and I hate things sticking out of my notebook. I'm now using my bluetooth mouse with the notebook.

The two batteries that came with my laptop are exactly the same size. The large capacity battery(4800mAh) just weighs more than the small capacity battery. The 4800mAh battery weighs 440grams and the 2400mAh battery weighs 283grams. The travellers drawer weighs 40grams and the DVD burner weighs 201 grams. The total weight of the notebook with large capacity battery and DVD burner installed is 2542grams. Without the DVD burner and with the travellers drawer and the small capacity battery, the notebook weighs 2223grams. I think I will always use the large capacity battery together with the DVD burner.

I'm not sure how long the batteries will last, but I will try to find this out later.

The little white thing is indeed the 128MB thumb drive. It's nice, but I won't be using it because I have a 1GB thumb drive.

I have no benchmarks yet but the notebook feels very fast. I will post some benchmarks tonight. Any recommendations?

Does that disgustingly heavy weight include anything other than the noterbook? Like ac adapter or mouse or something?

For that kind of weight I could get a top of the line freaking 15 inch screen one.

There is about a lb of unnecessary weight in this laptop.

when you put on the light green or white as desktop background, does the screen appear tobe shimmering like those traffic cops using night flourescent beacons ?

I have an Asus W3N that I have been using for about a week now. Ok, this topic is mainly about the W3V but I guess this will fit in anyway.

There is one thing that disturbs me quite a bit and that is the fan and the noise from the computer. By usign the Utility that comes with the notebook you can follow the temperature and fan speed.
When you are browsing the internet in the configuration "super performance or high performance" (Power gear preferences) the fan quickly speeds up to 3000rpm and the temperature is around 58 degrees celsius (whatever that is in fharenhiet) and it usually stays that way, even for hours. I find this disturbing since it is quite loud actually.

I wonder if there are other people that have the same "problem" with W3V or W3N.

In the manual that comes with the notebook there is a picture of the bottom of the computer that show vent holes for cooling. I dont have any holes on the bottom of my W3N only on the right side, and by looking at the pictures posted in this topic I cant see any holes there either.

Could this be why the fan keeps going at high speed since it doesn´t get the proper cooling effect.

Could this be a construction problem (failure)??

No, its a user error problem.

Laptops have two functions. One is to play games, the second is to do everything else.

You incorrectly set the laptop into game mode when you were not playing games.

    meijern,

Congrats on the new toy! It looks simply awesome. I'm glad you got it just now - your pics only confirm I should pick one up in NL.

    A couple of things:

    1) Where did you buy it? Would you buy it the same place again? Can you mention a few good Dutch resellers?

    2) Are you *absolutely* positive you haven't voided the global ASUS warranty by installing the 533MHz memory? What I want to make sure is that you are not only covered by your reseller's warranty with the memory upgrade.

    3) Is the entire palm rest made of aluminium or only the trim around the touchpad?

    4) How is the sound quality? I love the speakers under the palm rest! I didn't see that until now.

    Thanks!

    2. - yeah hold him responsible for your warranty... CALL asus up and ask them yourself.

    3. - look at the pictures, no..... the left and right click buttons are brushed aluminum.... the palm rest is not and its very easy to see that compare to say the V6 palm rest.

    Thanks,

The whole enchilada. The palm rest [V6V style], touch pad, lid, and probably other parts that I don't know of. THAT'S what I want. But we can only hope...

See, that's what I was thinking. In a way that makes me want to wait and see what the US model looks like. I am not in desperate need of the W3v, though I do want to get it as soon as possible.

It's a shame ASUS US isn't able to tell us what these systems will be like. But that seems to go back to the not very informative ASUS guys in Taiwan.

Justin, is there any ETA on the second shipment of W3's hitting the states?

Well that's the thing. If the W3V does not come to the way I expect it [at least looking like what Justin has on the site], then I'd have to reconsider my choice. I won't buy it if it looks like the pictures seen in this thread, since the color scheme doesn't appeal to me. I trust in ASUS US's judgement to order the one I [and possibly everyone else] want.

In the end, it's either the W3V [black/dark gray theme] or the V6V for me. I'd be pissed if I had to go with V6V cause I could've had it weeks ago, because I had to wait for the W3V. Not only that, the V6V is $200 more, it doesn't come with DDR2-533, and it's not widescreen. Then again it's very light and thin, which evens out in a way. Looks are very important to me. I can't stand buying something unattractive if I'm gonna be spending a good handful of money.

    The agony that is the W3V...hurry Taiwan...hurry! [} :)]

Anyone else here think that Asus USA's staff is mostly comprised of former SNK USA employees?

The W3V is the NeoGeo of laptops.

Justin or anyone...is the North American spec W3V getting the EXACT LCD screen as Meijern's, the one featured in his pics? Or is that potentially different too like some of the other specs?

Also, I know I asked this before, but I never saw the answer...are the North American spec W3V's coming with the "Travelers Drawer" included in the original package or not?

    Thanks [8D]

If anything is going to be the same with the US model... it should be the screen (maybe not EXACTLY the same... but it will be glossy for sure, so don't be surprised if it looks very similar to what meijern has showed us)

SNK always said they'd produce hot games for the NeoGeo system(namely King of Fighters and its sequels)... but never quite "delivered". Its games always took forever to come... and they were always very much anticipated.
Similarly, ASUS US employees claim the W3v will arrive... but it hasn't. The W3v, as we all know, is VERY much anticipated...

so in a sense, the W3v is more like one of SNK's King of Fighters games... we're all waiting for it to come, and SNK (ASUS USA, essentially) continues to increase customer anticipated while delaying its arrival. But it can also be looked upon as a NeoGeo as well I suppose...

I find it very odd that ASUS Taiwan is so secretive with ASUS USA. They're going to have to solve that big problem if they ever hope to really make waves in the U.S. market. I mean, I think they're a great company and I love my S5n and I think the W3v is killer, but even the most patient and forgiving among us has to admit this is getting ridiculous.

Congrats on getting a W3V! I'm really curious as to how the screen stacks up against the Sony S series, would you mind commenting on the comparison between the two? Thanks =)

Same spec'd screen - I'm sure....... same maker, no one can tell... sometimes they don't even have the option..... but it should be the same.

Other than that, nothing is known. The travelers drawer should come with the unit...... But Asus is picky when it comes to this..... the following models could take a travelers drawer and next to them you'll see which ones actually came with it.

    M1 - yes
    M2 - no
    M3 - no
    M6 - yes
    M7 (Z71v) - no
    W3 - ?????

    So I don't know.

    Thanks,
    Justin

thanks for the info "meijern" about the fan.

I can see your test about the fan speed is very low compared to mine. In super performance my fan i spinning at 3000rpm and the temp is about 58 degrees. If I just open Outlook to check for mail the temp goes up fast and the fan kicks in at 3000rpm.

I think there is something wrong with my W3N because it cant be that much of a difference from a W3V.

Sorry for my late response, but my exams are finally finished today [ :D] !

    @lapboy

I've tried the green and white background and I would have to say that the screen sparkles.

    @seal99

My notebook doesn't have vent holes for cooling on the bottom either. The fan is very quiet, expect when playing games.

    @mbdriver

    1) I bought mine at www.pcsnel.nl in Amsterdam. I can really recommend this shop, but that's maybe because I work there. If you want I can recommend some other shops.
    2) I'm 100% sure I didn't void the warranty. I called Asus again today and asked the same question about the warranty to a different person. Again they confirmed that I didn't void the global warranty.
    3) The entire palm rest is made of plastic or something similar. The left and right click buttons are indeed brushed aluminium.
    4) Sound quality is good. Better then I expected.

    @eightone and @jerrylin

Before the W3V I owned the Sony S1XP(s170) and S2XP (s270). Both notebooks I had to send back for repairs. The screen on the Sony notebooks is definitely better, viewing angels are much bigger. But still, the W3V screen is very good. Also the W3V is much quieter. I prefer 1280x768 rather then 1280x800 because it's more widescreen. I hate the black borders when watching movies.

I also ran some benchmarks. The results are:

    3DMark 03 score: 3020
    3DMark 05 score: 942

I also measured some CPU temperatures and how fast the fan was running after 1 hour of idle time.

    Power4Gear mode:
Battery saving 1200RPM(quiet) and 42 degrees Celsius
Super performance 1200RPM(quiet) and 57 degrees Celsius
    Email/office 1200RPM(quiet) 42 degrees Celsius

Running 3DMark 05 in loops the CPU warmed up to 73 degrees Celsius and the fan was spinning at 2000RPM. Now you can really hear the fan spinning and the air that's coming out of the notebook is quite hot. But still I think this is not to bad considering the CPU speed and the 'fast' GPU.

Tonight(Dutch time) I will post some viewing angle measurements.
