    Hi guys,

I'm a graphics designer that does a little bit of gaming. I figured that the A8jp is the perfect laptop for the price, which will satisfy all my requirements.

I live in Canada however I'm planning to buy it from Newegg. I have a friend in portland and he's coming up so shipping will not be an issue.

However, will there be any problems or disadvantages by doing this? For example will I get taxed ( laptop will be in the laptop bag)?

    Thanks folks

Well, it depends if your friends declares it, or if they find it and see it, they'll charge you and blacklist his name at customs for a decade I believe.

If it is in the box, packed and sealed - it would look suspicious.

But if it is in the laptop bag, and your friend says that it's his own laptop - everything will be fine (fine = no taxes, no problems). They would have to ban going abroad with laptops ;)

your friend is ordering to oregon?

You will pay no sales tax. newegg is in california.

Ya I would just take it out of the boxes and put it in the bag it came with. Make sure it works first because you might have a hard time with the warranty without the boxes. You can probably keep the one suitcase type box.

As long as it's not in the original box, they can't legally do anything unless they have some reason to suspect anything.

All you'll have to pay is the cost of the laptop + shipping to your friend's house.

Before asking a friend to do anything that might be considered illegal, you ought to do a little research. Going to jail just for brining someone a laptop is not my idea of a good time -regardless of how good a friend a person is.

Here are some sites to help.

    http://www.traveldocs.com/ca/customs.htm

    http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/E/pub/cp/rc4161/rc4161-e.html#P022

Since the A8Jp is not manufactured in North America, chances are very good it would be subject to duties/taxes.

And, if an inspection officer asks your friend to turn it on and it starts with the OS installation/registration that happens when you first turn it on, they might question is it really is your "friend's notebook".

However, since its going form US -> Canada, the Canadian custom guys are usually very very easygoing. My friend bought a 30" HD LCD from the states over the December break, was at customs, chatted with them for almost 20 minutes(from what he said, 'held up the line', 'Not fair the Americans get such great deals!', etc.) and they let him go without a single fee!

Of course, you could catch them on a bad day. In the end, its whatever the chances are, usually they don't ask that many questions are search. If they find it(which is pretty darn slim), then theres gotta be some explaining to do. To be truthful or not, its your friends decision :p

Ok, seriously... no one is going to jail. Your friend has every right to take his laptop with him into Canada. If it so happens that he decides to leave it with you, no one will be the wiser. Just have him unpack it and start it up to make sure there won't be any problems (technically, he could say it was his no matter what, but having it unpacked keeps the customs officers from asking any questions). ASUS provides a nice little laptop bag when you buy the a8jp, so he won't even have to buy a bag.
