I have an Asus M50Vm-X1 laptop which originall came with Vista 32 bit. I have just purchased a copy of Windows 7 64 bit home premium. When I enter the boot menu and try to boot from the dvd it asks me to press any key to continue and boot from the dvd. When I do this it simply boots to Windows Vista and will not let me run the installation disk for Windows?

    Any tips, thoughts, suggestions?

I have the original Vista restore disk that came with the Asus laptop and have been able to boot from that disk. When I try to open the setup file on the WIndows 7 disk it gives an error and tells me to reboot the system and run the disk that way.

Try and see if your Win 7 disk can be booted from another computer. It could be a bad disk that is causing the issue.

    +1 to what David said.

This sounds like either a bad DVD or DVD drive. If you have a USB DVD drive try that. You can also try a generic windows 7 disc from here if you think the media is bad.

What happens if you try to run the disk from inside Vista?

He can't. You can't install a 64 bit OS from within a 32 bit OS.

try going into your BIOS and set the dvd drive as your 1st boot device. Also, a question, does the inside plastic ring on the dvd have cracks in it? or do you have finger prints on the disk?

No, but he can see if the laptop is even reading the disk....If he gets that error message, he can rule out an issue with the optical drive...
