    HP HDX18t

-Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
-Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T9400 (2.53 GHz)

    -4GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm) - For 1GB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics
    -BD Combo
    -1GB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
-500GB 5400RPM SATA Dual Hard Drive (250GB x 2) with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection

    OR

    ASUS M70 Series M70Vn-C1

    -Intel Core 2 Duo T9400(2.53GHz)
-Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
    -17.0" Wide UXGA

They seem to be pretty close spec-wise. Someone else here could better analyze the difference in video cards than I can. Personally I would go with the HP. A bit bigger screen; 16:9 is a tad intriguing being the new kid on the block (from what I read might become the standard). I also think it's more aesthetically pleasing than the ASUS.

Oh and I recently bought an ASUS from Best Buy (x1) and had to return it due to keyboard lag issues. It's safe to say I'm a bit jaded right now by the ASUS brand, although quite pleased I have the 7805 gateway fx :)

If your primary purpose is going to be movie watching, and you have the desk space for that 18" behemoth, the HP would be better because of the native 1080p support and the DDR3 memory.

Battery life is going to be pretty poor regardless, and the remaining specs are pretty comparable. Gaming on will be pretty good on either card, with likely <5-10% performance on benches amounting to little real-world that you would actually be able to detect/appreciate.

Get the HP HDX-18. It has DDR3 system memory which will have a noticeable performanc gain over the M70Vn-C1

specs look pretty much the same. why don't look at the design and ask yourself?
