I can't get a straight answer to this,

I have terrible problems / hate my wireless card, I can find info that says I *might* have success upgrading to the Intel Wifi Link 5300 (from the 5100)...

Can I do this? Can someone show me a link the correct model to purchase.

Also is this the good card to buy, is there something else I should look at/should definitely buy/etc.

I'm 90% sure you can because I've seen laptops that had the option for either the 5100 or the 5300, which means they are compatible with the motherboard.

what problem exactly are you having with the 5100? I have the g50vt-X5 as well, and haven't really encountered any problems yet.

Make sure you get the regular mini PCI-E wifi card and not the half-size versions.

THIS will work on your G50Vt notebook.

You can successfully replace the WiFi card, but that dose not necessary mean you will have better performance, I had the same issue and after many tests and countless hours of reading it turned out that the new WiFi cards like 5100 and 5300 are not performing as well as the old Intel ones like 4695 with the old routers, so I just got another router and now the signal have not dropped even once since 2 months.

The 5100 is designed to have a 300MB/s bandwidth and uses only 2 antennas while the 5300 has a 450MB/s bandwidth and uses 3 antennas.
