I have recently spoken with a notebook supplier who made the following suggestions ;-
Asus Supertalent NB-29-DVB Barebone
AMD TMSMT 32 Turion 64 , 1.8 GHz, 512 KB CPU
Generic DR400SO512 PC3200 512MB DDR400 32x8 SODIMM Memory
Netgear NET-MR814 + Router
Harddisc 60GB
Windows XP pro + Norton Anti-virus
I would really appreciate if any of you computer wizards could give me some feedback, sort of a second evaluation since I don't know much about this stuff. LOL!!
Thanks guys.
My Budget is a bit limited but all this was estimate at around 1,640 US Dollars.

What are you planning on using your notbook for seems an obvious first question. If you're only going to be using it for simple addition an abicus would do the trick, if you want to play heavy duty games on there you'll need something more.
-
yes, it's near impossible to comment on those notebook specs without knowing what tasks you will be doing with the notebook. you're probably best served by filling out the "What Should I Buy" sticky/faq at the top of the Hardware forum and posting your answers there.
-
well looking at the specs, i'd say it's a bit over priced. never heard of the asus supertalent either, tho it might be a rebranded asus. but yeah, fill out a what should i buy faq and we'll be able to help you out better.
-
For that price, you could get a more powerful Asus Z63a which is probably much better than that machine.
-
I agree with AuroraS. With Z63a and the same spec, you can save ~$300 at least.
-
Diana welcome to the forums
I must agree with the guys above, aphirat and AuroraS, go with the Z63a for the same amount of money.
If you're going to be using the notebook for word processing, surfing, movies, programming, webdesign, etc and not much 3D intensive programs, such as games, CAD, etc, almost any new notebook computer will be fine.
My tip to you is go with what you can afford and get something you find most appealing with regard to appearance, weight, and of course get one with a screen that looks best to YOU. Remember, how one screen may look to one person may not be up to par for someone else.
Oh and another thing is you can never go wrong with an Asus :asus:
One more thing, as I stated before, you can't really go wrong with any of today's computers, as they are all very powerful, and should be more than enough for everyday users. Just go for one that appeals to you. Might I suggest the W5?

Initially I was interested on something by Toshiba but I was told that like any established brand they would make me pay more for less. I need my laptop for an occasional power point presentation, play a dvd to my prospestive students and day-to-day browsing. Since I don't have a dvd writer on my pc I thought of including it as well. And an occasional game wouldn't be so impossible.

P.S. I tried to access ("What Should I Buy" sticky/faq at the top of the Hardware forum) but I got stuck in FAQ search!!!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!

1. Are the presentations on the computer itself or via a projector? If the former then the 15.4" display will be suitable for only a few people. There are some models with 17" displays but I don't know how these would fit with the budget. If you are using a projector then a slightly smaller computer such as the Z63A will be more portable.
2. What sort of games? Relatively simple / old ones or new ones with complex 3D graphics. If the latter then you need a dedicated graphics processor.

If you were looking at Toshiba I would suggest the M40 15.4inch widescreen or their Toshiba M55 a 14" model widescreen. My friend has a M55 and it's beautiful. She uses it at school and at work. I believe it's the perfect size for portability and not too small, so it's comfortable to use normally as well. Only thing is it doesn't have a dedicated video graphics card. Except for the gaming thing, it should be perfect for what you have described you would be doing. I also mentioned this unit since you were looking at Toshiba, but I would also suggest the 14" Asus W3V, and the Asus W5 again.

Well considering I like RPGs I guess I would say complex 3D graphics and regarding the presentations they will be through a projector but I'll be showing DVDs to a class of max 20 students.
I'll be looking at the laptops you suggested and eventually let u know what i decided on and how i am getting along. 10x guys.
