I've noticed as of late that there is poorer performance on my GPU in this laptop than that of several months back.

I recently ran a 3DMark06 test and received the score of ~1900.

The laptop is still under warranty and a clean OS install is a last resort.

The laptop is stock except for an Atheros wireless card instead of the Intel, however, I hardly see how this could make a difference if any.

Can anyone help me with my problem?

GPU Drivers can severely affect performance, have you changed them in this time period? Best to use driver sweeper in safe mode and install a good set of drivers.

I just recently changed them: I removed the previous drivers and then installed the new ones. But this performance lag existed before that, hence the reason for change.

EDIT: Just performed the task as advised above and scored ~4500, a fair bit less than what I know the 9700M GT to be capable of. Should I return the notebook and get a replacement GPU or are there solutions that I'm not currently aware of?

Tried the advice above and got nothing. Running 185.81 drivers at the moment, was running 181.00 beforehand. Problem had existed running both firmwares.

use something like gpu-z or rivatuner to watch the clocks. i have a feeling something is preventing it from going to max (could be a power profile issue, could be an os issue, could be a driver issue).

Uploaded the log file of the last 3DMark06 test. It appear that memory runs at mostly 800mhz and the Core runs at mostly 625mhz. I'm not if this is a temperature problem; it could be but I know not a lot about this type of thing.

Edit: Just deduced that the lower clocks could be the between-tests clock (hurr-durr). Still have no idea what's wrong. Is it repairable/returnable?

Try to run ATI tool artifact test while monitoring the temps with HWmonitor and your clock speeds with GPUZ. If your card downclocks due to high temps you will know about it soon enough, plus you will find out where your card tops out temp wise also which is useful to know.

If it is temperatures that are a problem, check your vents to make sure no dust is blocking them and perhaps also buy some thermal compound and replace the stock compound on the GPU. I recommend ICD 7 24carrat

your card is hitting 105C way too fast. it seems like it idles at +-78C (+17:59:25), then hits 105C (+18:01:13) a minute after starting a game (less not counting the load time).

i would clean out the dust, and if that doesn't help, send it in to asus.

is the fan working? im asking because the fan should spin up to 100% when the gpu hits 93, but the rate of heating doesnt change. should be decreasing a lot quicker as well (+18:06:19)

edit: attached my temp log (from cod4). didnt log the cooling down, but it should be relatively quick. outside temp is 21.1C. last time i cleaned it was about 2 months ago.
    edit2: attached a cooldown log

I reran 3DMark06 after properly cleaning out the dust in the notebook and scored ~5800 in 1280x1024. This is more than satisfactory. Thanks all for your help.

check the temps just in case.
