Hey, I'm thinking of ordering an a8jm from portableone in the very near future. What upgrades, if any, would you all consider looking at?

internal bluetooth thats it. its already fast. If you want more ram i would suggest add it yourself. Its cheaper and takes 2 minutes to do. you wont notice a cpu jump to 2.0 so no point in getting that.

and also, i think you can keep the CPU the lowest setting, and wait for the Core 2 Duo when it comes out later this year and buy that then and use it

Actually that's exactly why I was never seriously considering the processor, I plan to upgrade to merom in a while.

I was mainly concerned with the XPP P1 Recovery package and screen and maybe the HD, if it wasn't bad price-wise. I have purchased the MX as of now.

    Portable One MX
    (T2400 1.83GHz/14.1"UVA WXGA /1GB/ 100GB /DVD±RW/56K 10/1000 WiFi BT/TPM/ XPH) 1 $1,599.00 $1,599.00
    PROC:T2400
    MEM:1GB
    HD:100GB
    OFFICE:NONE
    OS:XPH
    WRNTY:3YR $100.00 $100.00
    DISP:INDOOR
    BT:YES

    That's the specs.

because its preconfigured they charge you an arm and a leg to change it

order another hd and more ram down the road

i think upgrading to 3 year warrantee for 100 is worth considering

I'm unbelievably excited to get this machine in my hands. Thank you all for your help. I might just upgrade the Hd and Ram in a lil' while (merom?).

and plz do post a review of it when it comes. I also think the $100 for 3 yrs of warranty is a great choice. I wonder how fast portableone ships these? And if the display upgrade for $400 is worth it

I'm also looking at this versus the W3J. From what I can tell, the breakdown is as such:

    W3J:
    Better Looks
    Swappable Bay
    $1,799

    MX:
    Not Quite as Nice Looking
    Express Card Reader
    Mini-Cam
    $1,599

Just about everything else is the same. I'm thinking of doing the same upgrade with Merom upon its release (if it's confirmed we can). I think you made a good choice. I look forward to your review!

um dont forget 512 mb dedicated 7600 vs 256 mb x1600

i think that puts a big egg in the mx basket.

u can delete bluetooth and get it to 1549

I'm a little confused - Does XP home on the MX come with a rcovery CD or a full re-install CD? How about XP Pro on it? Which does the W3J come with?

Also, since gaming isn't my biggest concern (though I do want a dedicated gfx card for future-proofing, Aero and my occasional game) it's funny that for less $, I could wind up with everything the W3J's got + a better gfx card... Am I missing something here?

i think both machines are a bargain on the current us market

i think the a8jm is really a much better deal in that its actually unique.

I like the things the w3j has I think they are worth almost $250 like the extra bay and the better chassis

but its like just making it outside the dollar range and making it less of a good deal.

If you are gonna spend that much though with upgrades then i think youre back in the w3j category. like youre gonna buy a leather bag and external hd say. well then maybe skip those and get the aluminum lid and the extra bay and upgrade to the w3j.

you can almost think of them as the same machine and its a chassis upgrade only at purchase time. Sound right?

Does the warranty on this come from Asus or Portable One? Has anybody figured out the questions in post #14?

    Thanks

Also, don't forget that A8Jm has DVI and 5 USB ports, while W3J has no DVI and 3 USB ports :)

Not really because the x1600 with 256 is still faster than the 7600 with 512

I may have an answer to (some of) these questions by the end of the day...my W3V-based MX from PortableOne is "On FedEx vehicle for delivery" as of 45 minutes ago :)

As for shipping times, the folks at PortableOne told me they usually ship out new orders within a week, sometimes within 2 days; mine took considerably longer because there were dead-pixel and other issues with the first couple of screens they tested in it, but they've told me the one I'm getting now is perfect, so I'm eager to get my box. Once I open it up, I can let you all know what kinds of stuff came with it--with luck, they will clarify in the paperwork what the deal is with the warranty, etc....

This will be my first laptop so I'll do my best as far as the review. Don't expect too much but once I get it I'll try and answer all of your questions.

I assume that the warranty would be from Portableone as they are opening the A8jm to put in the bluetooth module right? Not to mention the screen and other upgrades you can put in.

I haven't received any notification as far as shipping, but once it does ship it's two-day. (free)

    :D

Well, there was both more and less in the box than I had thought. Nothing to clarify the situation with the warrantry--like Nix says, though, it's probably through PortableOne since they've upgraded components and rebranded it as their own. On a positive note, my (W3V) MX machine is gorgeous and came with lots of extras, like nice (and importantly to me, non-Norton) anitvirus/system care software and preloaded Firefox, not to mention a USB mouse and nice laptop bag--in part because of the unlucky long wait I had to endure to get mine, I suspect, but also in part because the folks at PortableOne seem to be very reasonable, bright and nice people :)

If you all are interested in pics from my experience opening the box and setting things up (or a mini, first-timer's review) just let me know! Keep in mind, I bought one of the very last MXs to be based on the W3V platform, so my chassis, etc. is different from the A8jm-based MX available from PortableOne now; your mileage will vary if you haven't already ordered one.
