    Hi everybody,

I was wondering if anyone has the technical mods that Portable1 uses on its MX series? I would like to take my stock W3V and apply the mods myself.

For those who don't know it, Portable1 apparently mods its W3Vs and sells them as the MX1. Some mods that I noticed from their website:
    - High-Xchange copper molding heat sink with heat pipes and Arctic Silver 5
    - Custom P1 desgined Graphite Thermal Foils for enhanced heat dissipation

If anyone knows where to acquire of prepare mods like this let me know, so I can go to work.

    Thanks,

    Mavtop

... the heatsink is the same heatsink that Asus put in the W3. Artic Silver 5 does absolutely nothing to extend life or increase performance (two things that AS5 is used for on overclocked P4's / Athlons). At the very best you'll lower your top end temp (under a full load) but a 1 degree........ That doesn't mean anything for a cpu like a pentium-m that is tops out well under it's thermal limit anyway. However, AS5 also technically voids your chip warranty with Intel (which is 3 years regardless of your warranty with your dealer).

The "graphite thermal foils" can be picked up at a local home depot - or heating supplly store. You want to look for "thermal tape" and if you care to search through my study on heat and the W3, you'll see where "heat" is actually created and you'll understand why spreading that heat and/or reflecting that heat is actually going to be worse.

Ah, so I was correct in assuming that any mods that could create a significant difference in the performance/usability would have already been included in the W3V's design from ASUS.

I don't mean to point out portable1's hypocrisy by making claims of the sort. Well, Justin, your response makes me happy because it means that I dont have to do anything else to my laptop. It's done and a review should be forthcoming.

    Thanks,

.... certain companies have a history of making the standard parts that come in the systems they sell, better..... that's not a crime and they do explain certain things better than we may, but we're focused on presenting the material in the more of the way Asus expects it, so we don't have people coming back later and saying we tried to pull the wool over their eyes.

The heat issue is close to BS to begin with, but I did a study that shows the heat really only tranfers through the right most part of the touchpad and then transfers onto the palmrest from there..... that has everything to do with the location of the hard drive which is very close to the touchpad (because of the small footprint of the system). Thermal tape can remove that little problem if you feel you have it, but really what you'll do is remove the "hot spot" and transfer all that heat throughout the right side of the palmrest and just create a "warm area" over the whole thing. The other option is to reflect the heat back down to the hard drive and doing that could potentially harm the performance and the life span of the drive itself...

I managed to get hold of Portable One's HDD cooling modification and install it in my W3A. The graphite foil is placed between the HDD and the base of the computer, so I presume that the objective is to conduct more heat downwards from the HDD, which will keep palms cooler but knees warmer. I saw a reduction in HDD temperature of 1 or 2°C. The graphite foils are fairly brittle and P1 is not planning to make a business of selling them separately.

Personally, I would like to see an improvement in the W3's internal airflow. There are some vents at the front of the chassis which should let cool air be drawn over the HDD en route to the CPU fan. However, this doesn't seem to work very well. Take a look at the Sony S series which also has the HDD under the right palm rest and you will find that the HDD is cooler because the airflow works better. I know that from experience becasue I used to have the S and when I came to swap out the HDD prior to disposal I found it was quite dirty.
