I recently purchased a Z71V from IST. After getting the OS loaded, things seem to have been fine. However, in the first couple of weeks I've begun to notice a couple of issues and wondered if anyone else has had them.

I know notebooks can be flakier than desktops and it's possible I have a bad driver or something misconfigured. I don't want to pursue an exchange without making sure I'm not missing something.

    1. Sometimes...and only sometimes...the machine doesn't want to turn on. Usually at night I shutdown and put it on the floor....then in the morning before leaving for work, I put it on the coffee table and turn it on so it's available to SSH in to from work. However, some mornings I hit the big power button and nothing happens. Try a couple more times..nothing. Pick the thing up and put it back down...hit power button...it works. I can't verify that for sure it always turns on after "picking it up" again (which of course makes no sense anyway), but it's enough of a coincidence that it stuck in my head.

    2. Sometimes...and only sometimes...it seems to boot up quickly enough, but after logging in it just sticks. It booted up this morning, I logged in and it was just sitting there. Nothing chewing CPU time, no memory hogs. I can access the task manager via ctrl-alt-del fine.

I didn't have time to nursemaid it this morning so I just left it to chunk through whatever it was trying to do. 1/2 hour later at work I can't connect to it so it must be choking on the network or something. I'm guessing this is some sort of connectivity issue although the wireless signal indicator is active...not as worried about this one till I can verify it's not something on startup.

I'm super careful about keeping my machines clean. Both in terms of virus's/spyware/etc and also in terms of startup programs, apps, etc. The only thing it should be loading on startup right now are the utilities needed by the laptop (example - touchpad utility), slimserver, and superadblocker.

The power button is a concern though. Anyone had a similar experience?

    Thanks,

    Nick

Sounds like something might be loose in there like the power connector. When you pick it up it probably goes back into place.

Might want to try turning everything off and see how it does. If everything seems to work well, start turning things on one at a time to see if you can find the problem. Did you try opening Windows Explorer from the task manager?

Might want to try using the Intel driver, sometimes it works better. Also a firmware update on your router may help if you have one.

    Good Luck.

That was my thought too...I hope not though. Getting stuff returned and replaced is always such a hassle.

I hadn't thought about turning everything off. That's probably a good idea. Originally I thought it was superadblocker. On my desktop I used to have a problem launching IE if the service was still starting (and presumably phoning home). But this is obviously bigger than IE. I did try briefly this morning opening a new explorer.exe although I'd not killed the other.

Actually, I am using the intel driver. The first thing I went out and did was rummage around for drivers to the bits and pieces inside. It may just be that my router sucks or perhaps it'll help if I set the IP address instead of DHCP. Why I went away from Linksys when I replaced my wired router I'll never know.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

With multiple issue you should contact your dealer and arrange a pickup of it. Rick can help you. They pick up the expense no charge to you at all. If you had one issue maybee its worth troubleshooting. I can tell you that we just had 1 z71v returned for the same exact issue. It runs fine games find and did everything great except for cold boots. Initially i thought it was the mobo. Changed that ran a stresser and it crapped again. Now the vga card is bad. Return it and hope for a quick turn around.
