I've experienced a weird issue a few times with my laptop. First it was when i installed NHC. I ran it to see if it was any good and then minimized it. I then browsed for 30-35 minutes and it was about then i realized my cooler never went on all that time. I quickly opened NHC and while i didn't get to see the CPU temperature, i got a warning about the HDD - it was above 65 degrees. I shut it down manually as quick as i could. Naturally it was burning on its underside really bad. Anyway, i figured NHC was the culprit as it tries to manage my power settings and somehow didn't get along too well with P4G. This was a month ago.
Today i turned the laptop on and browsed and noticed that again the fan didn't turn on. I ran mobmeter and it read 50 degrees for the CPU. I thought i should give it more time until it thinks it's become too hot and it turns the fan on.
The CPU reached 65 degrees and it still wasn't on so i switched to High Performance (i was running as always on Quiet Office. The fan immediately turned on but it made a very weird sound upon startup. Like some screeching sound. This really freaked me out. I opened the cover and looked at it but it looks just fine, no dust or anything. It also moves easily...
Come tot think of it, i did hear the exact same sound a few weeks ago when the fan turned on like it normally should at certain intervals.
What do you think the problem could be? I'm really scared to leave it on when i'm not around it...![]()
And i also opened the HDD cover out of curiosity but i have a very hard time putting it back without the corner that doesn't have a screw moving quite badly. I spend 1,5 hours trying to make it like it was before i opened it but i had no luck. I don't get it, how did they make it stick so nicely and how could i have did anything to it when removing, especially when it's out of metal and not that easy to bend?

If it gets too hot it will shut itself off.

Yeah, I know but that won't fix the problem if indeed there is one.
Besides, i don't want to get there. -

If this happens all the time, I would be concerned. Mine has been on all day and I am just surfing now, it is running at 41C for the CPU and 35C for the hard drive. If the fan isn't running properly, you can easily buy a replacement for $10 from the estore. 65C isn't too concerning, unless that is what it runs with nothing happening (I would check that the CPU percent is less than 5% for half hour). If that temp is above 50C, I would be concerned. Other wise, don't worry.

Max temp for the Turion is 95C. You should be okay. -
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
If you were still running NHC the second time it happened, and you tend to use your notebook out of standy or hibernate rather than cold boot, it's NHC that's the culprit here. This kind of problem with fan temp control has been known to happen on occasion when you come back out of Sb/Hb, causing the fan to stay off until you either cycle again through Sb or shut it down.... probably some little glitch with how NHC talks to the ACPI in the bios or something.
As always when you're running non-standard 3rd party system management apps, you have to pay attention to what is happening. Although, I confess that I sometimes forget that rule too.

Thanks for the replies. I'm not concerned about the temperature, as the CPU idles at around 54C, i'm concerned about the fan not turning on all the time.
If i remember correctly, i did slightly bang the laptop the night before. Slightly si the key word. Maybe the fan moved and got stuck somehow and the voltage applied to it while in Quiet Office mode wasn't enough to make it budge. That would explain the weird sound and the eventual startup when i turned Super Performance on.
I don't have NHC anymore. I'm staying away from it. I did have mombeter on when this happened though...
Possible serious cooling problem
