Does anybody know if I need a transformer to use a netbook in Italy or will it run on 220 volts. I hate to burn it up (it's new).

Your power brick should list a range of voltages that it can run safely on.
For example, my G51VX-RX05 power brick says that it can run from 100v-240v -

The one thing you may need is a plug adapter for the PS to the wall (I needed one in Asia a couple of years ago when I was overseas), depending on the Italian wall socket. Most hotels have these available for guests, or you can purchase one if you're staying privately.

typically anything with a "power brick" is a transformer as well...
anyway, this is what the italy power plug looks like:

if your socket doesn't look like that, you'll need an adaptor like the one in that link. -
you need to check the frequency (Hz) too.
