Just wondering who I should buy a z96j from. My parents are worried that I will end up getting shafted if the computer has issues or breaks down. (Parents and buying things online) I know Geared2Play must be pretty good since I seen him post on here and have read a lot of good things. I have heard some good things about PowerNotebooks as well. Which one do you guys recommend?
-
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
Either Eddie or Donald will give you top-notch service with no worries - both are highly regarded by those here who have purchased from them (full disclosure, mine is from Eddie). Flip a coin - you really can't lose with either company; if your parents are really worried have them read through the profiles on resellerratings.
You will be in good hands with either of them, really, and their service (in the unlikely event that it breaks and needs it, or if you have any other questions/problems with drivers, function or other issues) will **vastly** exceed what you would get from either the large corporates (Dell, Sony, Acer, etc) or local b&m stores (BBuy, CCity, CUSA). -
As ClearSkies mentioned, either one will give you the best service anywhere, flip a coin, pull coloured sticks, whatever
-
Agreed with above people; however I would(and did) go with Geared2Play. They are VERY fast, reliable, and Eddie is THE MAN. He does all repairs in shop, even motherboard-level. He is one of the only resellers in the country to do so. Warranty service would probably be a great deal better through Geared2Play.
Where do you live? That plays a pretty big factor on where you buy. I live on the east coast, and G2P is only 30 minutes away. I believe powernotebooks.com is located in California. Not sure about that though. -
no powernotebooks is located in genoa nevada... i ordered from powernotebooks on 7/28 awaiting my laptop still they quoted around 5 business days for building so i have a little longer to wait
expecting an email either friday or monday saying they shipped it..
so far so good i asked about 5-6 questions before ordering, and they answered very promptly, ron baird answered my questions. I spoke to donald on the phone about a credit card problem evidently when my dad(using his CCi dont have one) ordered he forgot to input the CC number... so donald called within 30mins of us placing the order very nice of him to do so. So that my dad could provide the CC number. So far great service recieved a total of 3 emails after i ordered saying things like order recieved and credit card accepted and charged. Awesome service so far.
ah, the warranty for the asus z96j in question (same one i ordered) is a 3 year warranty through powernotebooks.com next business day shipping and also free shipping both ways. if you need the computer fixed or updated. seems like an awesome deal. I dont know about gear2play though theres might be better or worse you would have to ask or look on the website.
Like everyone said, me being biased towards powernotebooks, both are a toss up from what I heard and read, gear2play is a great company and from my experiances powernotebooks is also. So good luck and either will not let you down. -
Well I would buy based on where you live, but also this:
If you buy from powernotebooks.com, you have to get a fully configured system. If you buy from G2P, you can get a barebones with a warranty and buy parts cheaper somewhere else and save a little $$$. Also, G2P's warranty policies are awesome. You can do almost anything to your laptop without voiding your warranty, as long as you contact Eddie about it first. He'll even let you open up the laptop and upgrade the cpu yourself(you need his permission first though). He even gave me the freedom to pull my whole Z96 apart so I could paint it, but I declined since I don't want to paint this one.
Either way you go, you'll be fine. -
If you're not sure then go read people's comments at resellerratings.com. Maybe it will give you more idea there. But I think both company are fine with their service and price.
-
either is fine, infact the owners of both (Donald and Eddie) are frequent posters here and both have very good reseller ratings so you can't go wrong with either. They will take care of you. I've talked to both over the phone and they were very helpful and patient.
-
Do they both allow you to swap processors? Say from the Core Duo to the Core 2 Duo down the line w/o voiding the warranty? Also, another question my parents ask me "since you arent getting it from a big company, what happens if they go out of business?" I told them they are one of the top notebook sellers and they probably wouldn't, but they keep saying, "what if?"
Also, about how long would it take to build the machine and ship it? Would it take more than a week or a week and a half before it got to me? Im just wondering because I leave for school on the 18th. If I ordered tomorrow would I get it by then?
Final question, do both of them have the z96j in stock? -
-
You could visit powernotebooks website and email their support service, they will be very happy to answer all of your question.
-
I just emailed them.
-
How long did it take to get the notebook after you ordered it?

Thanks Eddie.
Just wondering if anyone that bought their z96j from PowerNotebooks, if they allow you to upgrade the CPU w/o voiding the waranty? I emailed them last night and haven't received a response back yet. -
I placed an advanced order for the Z96J from G2P. About a week before they were released. G2P shipped mine out the day after they came in stock. VERY fast! He would have shipped mine out the day it came in stock, but Asus dipped ship the BoA logos and Eddie had to have the overnighted so he could ship it out the next day. The only thing faster than G2P is buying something pre-configured at a local store such as BestBuy. =)

Thanks. I didnt know what his name was on here.

Since people here have posted positive reviews about these resellers, I guess I would share my experience also, which wasnt a pleasant one !
I joined this forum, read the discussions and wanted to buy a W7J. I agree I am a noob but since everyone suggested "pm them or email them" like they are suggesting here I decided to PM Eddie from Geared2Play after reading all their positive reviews. That was my first PM to any user on this forum.
Here is what I wrote :
To my surprise this was the reply I got from Geared2Play (Eddie) :
I decided immediately NOT to purchase from him. This is not the way I would expect a new member to be treated on any forum. Needless to say, I replied to him just as rudly and reminded him that its a forum and I am free to PM whomsover I want. In any case, here is what I thought.... what if I order from his site and run into a problem with the notebook and PM him telling him about it.. i would probably get a reply similar to the above one...
I am sure people have had positive experiences with G2P but Im just relating mine... I would not PM him again... -

Perhaps if you actually did contact us directly you may have got the reply you wanted. O h well too bad. Hope you were taken care off. Now you know not to pm me becuase either i will not reply or i will not give you the time of day. If you have sales questions please contact me directly. If you have support questions same thing. if you are not a customer dont contact me directly or indirectly. Post your question on the forums our forums or notebookreview and hope that i will answer it. You had a sales question. Next time before you ask read the product page. All your answers were right there. Didnt have to pm me nor did you have to contact me. All you had to do was read.

Guys, when you want to buy something from a store, you go to the store. You don't drive to a friends house to buy something you get from the store.
This is the same thing here. If you want to buy a laptop from a website, go to the website. Don't contact the rep through the forum. He's here to help people out, not to run his business on someone else's forum.
Everything you need to know can be found on G2P's website. Don't bother Eddie with questions that are answered on his site. Including prices. He is a busy guy; unlike many other resellers he WORKS. Not to put down any other resellers, but Eddie is a great guy, who does his job, puts together reliable systems at a good price, and stands behind them. When you try to waste his time, he isn't going to send you back some work of art. So he typed his message a little quickly probably while doing a list of other things... atleast you got the message, and he even did respond. Just relax and layoff Eddie. G2P is a wonderful place to buy from, just do it through their store/website. -
I did go to the Geared2Play website. I just wanted an additional battery and a sleeve (which were not mentioned on the website) so I pm'ed.
Im sure he is a busy guy... so am I. I am a medical doctor and I am doing my residency in surgery. I get patients calling me at home after my shift asking all sorts of questions .. which maybe extremely frustrating to me ! I get people asking me where to buy the medicine I prescribed them... That is just how people are ... I cant turn around and tell them I do not have the time of the day or I am not the pharmacist !
All I am saying is, a bit of courtesy never hurt anyone. All that was needed to be said was "Please visit our website and read the FAQ" ... This Eddie chap was rude to a new user like me and I dont care how busy his day is... it was uncalled for.
My original post (which I think he is trying to bury) :

You should be able to purchase a spare battery on the website. Don't know about a sleeve though... you can get one at BestBuy for ~$20.
And uh... he's not trying to "bury" anything. -

I agree with the customer. There is a simple solution G2P which is just reply to his PM saying please visit the site, contact me at this email address, or call me for information. If asking about the price offends you so much, maybe you should leave the sales to someone else. And the fact that you are arguing about this in this thread (PowerNotebooks or Geared2Play?) is hilarious as you are really making yourself look good. But yes I know... You probably don't care if you get the sale or not. It's the respect factor. How dare someone ask a question when you already spent all that time making the FAQ.

You are missing the point. I dont care. I am not a sales rep. My name is eddie. if i dont like your question i will tell you to go where the sun dont shine. You are not a customer and i did not feel you were a potential customer. If i were rude i did so with a purpose. I didnt want to talk to you again,. If you take it to a personal level then that is your problem. Leave me alone and buy wherever you please. i dont give a dime. believe it or not i actually have a day job and being nice to every forum goer or potential customer is not one of them. If i were rude to you then dont contact me again. Trying to say that i am rude by trade and by nature is just plain wrong. I singled you out. You are special. If i were to call you a nasty vendictive penny pincher that would be stepping out of line wouldnt it? I dont know you and you dont know me. Making an assumption that i treat you like i treat everyone else is called sterotyping. End of story. Have a nice day

If you feel that i am an a$$ then dont message me and dont contact me but dont make assumptions either. -
You guys should take this elsewhere, this is not a market place.
-
My point, and Eddie's point exactly. He does not run his business on the forum. Nor should he.
Can we get a mod to lock this thread? All that is going to be said has been said. Either place, PN or G2P, is a good choice and the original poster will be happy. It's up to him to choose between the two. -
Thanks for all the reviews and such. Hopefully I'll order one in the next 24-48 hours.
-
As per requested, however, Private messages are....well, private messages, it would be better if it was kept private.
The fact is that, this forum is a public forum, not a dealer forum, so again I repeat myself(not in this thread of course), that reseller matters are to be kept within the resellers and the customer(whether potential or not).
Neither side is at fault, but neither side is right.
PowerNotebooks or Geared2Play?
