Hey guys, I looking for a decent Asus 14" for gaming. Now I have checked out the Asus A8Js and the W3J with Go 7700 and X1600 cards respectively.
The A8J claims that the 7700 comes with a 512mb video ram. Is this fully dedicated or 256mb dedicated and 256 shared with onboard Ram?
Also, what do you guys think of these models, and are there any others that I should know of for gaming? I have seen the G1/G2 series and they are too big.
Can I upgrade on the above laptop's to 2GB ram? They only seem to come with 1GB ram.
Thanks for all your replies!

I don't think the 7700Go could fully utilize 512MB of RAM on it's own. The cards that really see an improvement from having 512MB of RAM are the 8800 series and the X1800/X19xx cards. I'm not sure if the A8J has 512MB of dedicated V-RAM.
Yes, you can upgrade the RAM to 2GB. -
The a8js has 512MB of dedicated VRAM. It shows it clearly in the nvidia control panel.
The Geforcego 7700 is the most powerful video card currently in 14 and 15 inch notebooks.
If you're looking for something more powerful, I'm afraid you'll have to look at 17 desktop replacement notebooks for cards like Geforcego 7900gs or higher.
14 and 15 inch notebooks can not handle the more powerful graphic cards due to thermal issues.
Also 512MB VRAM wouldn't be fully utitlised anyways, 256 would be for heavy games. There's still stuttering for newer games at very high resolution and details showing the fact that huge amount of VRAM is not the factor for smooth gameplay - It's mostly the GPU. -
The Asus A8Js has 512 dedicated
No hypermemory or turbocache thing
Its works fine with me -
The only other 14 inch model for gaming that would compare is the compal hgl 30.
It has a 7600 go. I think of it as inferior in most ways but it can have a 9 cell battery.
There are a few models for sale in the europe and asia market that never came here they are the benq joybook, zepto znote and ecs something or other.
As far as I know a8js and p can go up to 4 gb ram. -
Thanks for all your replies guys. By gaming, I mean within the constrictions of size, i was looking for the best deal. The Asus definately seems to be a good deal.
I dont live in the US, but for those of you who do, did you buy it from a retail store? or online? -

Ah yes, Asus does have some of the best 14" high performance (gaming) laptops in the market, the A8js, A8jp, W3J and in the future the V2 with a X1450 which is a low end video card.
Most people in the US do order Online, especially Asus products since online resellers are the dominant form. Fortunately Asus products are going to be offered in big box stores, like Best Buys which has the G1 already and people are now able to go and see it and play with it.
